What's been wrong with our trading?

Got extra value for Dangerfield, rolled the dice on Menzel. Lever deal an absolute home run.

I'm fine with all that.
Didn't get great value for Dangerfield for starters.

In recent years we've traded in Menzel, Seedsman, Hampton, Gore and last year gave away Lyons for a third.

Menzel and Gore busts.
Seedsman and Hampton both injury prone and were before we traded them in and we gave up a second for both.

Lever we did well.

But in 3 years we've lost players and they haven't been replaced by quality players and I like Seeds.

We talk up our great year but our side was built on trading from over 3 years ago and none of our recent drafting.

But you must be wrong because Kornes and Lloyd just said crows have been a disaster. Oh well that’s that then. No finals for us this year, but that’s ok, at least one of the SA teams is really going to smash it. Yay Ports.

Trade all of our picks for players.

I’d give away all of this years draft picks, without a second thought, if it nets a flag.

The time is now, go all in.
Easy to say, but who are the players? Who's willing to move? I don't see a whole bunch on the market.

Yes, but what Sanders is saying is we generally take 2 or 3 years to turn players into first-22. Draftees don't make immediate impact. (e.g. Milera, Atkins, Doedee...really Lever is the only one recently that came straight in).

So if we go to the draft it will do nothing for us next year.
But by that logic wouldn't the players from 1, 2 or 3 drafts ago be banging down the door of the first 22 now?

I really think the AFL needs to think of a better model regarding player movement. They cant sit halfway between the American model where you can get dealt anytime without consent and the system where players have all the power we have now.
The solution is not helpful to VFL, so it won't change in a hurry.

Things I'd like to see:
  • 4 year contracts for draftees
  • State based Academies for ALL clubs
  • Get rid of Free Agency compensation
  • FA club losing the player gets a single pick based on PUBLIC formula, FA club receiving the player pays the price in points at the end of trade period. <from same round as pick down - ie 2nd round pick only takes points from second round down>
  • Get rid of PSD
  • Players can only choose a state, not a club for trades. If player doesn't get traded they go into the ND at a MAX of their last contract price for two years, the old club gets the pick the new club uses in the ND to pick the player.
Not holding my breath :)

It would have been so much better for my mental health to go on a media blackout this last fortnight. Constantly checking all the so called 'experts' twitter pages is doing my head in.

I'll admit, the other day I went to a really dark place. Thats right, I checked Kane Cornes' and Mitch Cleary's twitter. It just felt so wrong, I had to set fire to my laptop afterwards!

All of the trades completed so far have involved players moving from interstate clubs back to Victoria. Not counting FA's obviously.

Surely it's time the non-Vic clubs got together and started demanding some sort of concessions to counter this.

The Dangerfield deal was probably the worst in modern history for value to us. We gave away a 2nd round pick for Menzel, who'd been dropped from the wooden spoon team. Lever should've been 2 first round picks straight up, without any other concessions. Our trading is the easily our weakest point. By a long way.

It was speculated at the time; but it’s blatantly clear that FA is just an avenue to **** over non-Vic clubs.

The concessions are "we let you enter the VFL, now **** off"

The north eastern clubs already have it. They have academies. The AFL don't give a shit about the self sufficient clubs like us. We will find a way to survive despite the obvious disadvantages, as we have for 25+ years.

AFL need to make a change to trading rules.

They can call it the Sooky La La Addendum.

I would prefer all states have AFL funded TAC Cup style programs over AFL clubs running academies.

If all clubs academies why bother having a draft?

We may as well replicate the NRL system if we had further down the "Academies route"

Agree with the sentiment of the four year contract for all draftees. But we are seeing players demand a trade mid contract and effectively becoming a Free Agent by setting a club of choice.

Of course you could say no trading of these players during that period. But what happens if the club wants to trade or delist them?
