I think there should be a 10% loading on all contracts of players who are with the club they were recruited to.

A loyalty bonus, that is lost once you are traded.

The draft is a pillar of equalisation but now it means nothing other than to facilitate trades by allows tradable currency. There needs to be something done to "make the draft great again!"
How about something similar to Bird rights in the NBA?

I actually had to look up bird rights.

Something similar, but without the necessity to be a qualified free agent.

Essentially it is a loyalty bonus (maybe starting from the draftees first contract renewal) which sits outside the salary cap, and is lost when a player is traded.

It would help reward teams that draft well and would prevent early movement of draftees as they would forfeit a long period of loyalty bonuses.

It also incentivises clubs to kee these players as it "increases" their salary cap.

So if we go to the draft it will do nothing for us next year.
Depends a bit on who we draft and our attitude to playing them in their rookie year.

Last year a lot of people including myself thought Berry could have possibly fitted right into the midfield from year one, but instead we drafted Gallucci as a longer term prospect (although admittedly he did get a game against Brisbane).

Compare that to Port who picked Powell Pepper and threw him into the fire immediately, or Hawthorn with Burton the year before (while we have had Doedee playing SANFL for two years)...

I think that a few people may have some unrealistic expectations when it comes to trade time. Both in regards to outcomes and the ongoing reporting.
Essentially this is an ongoing negotiating process that has dynamic external factors involved with every scenario.
There is a reason that trades fall after significant pieces get done.
The static media have it the toughest, they have created a CNN type environment without the sufficient content to fill it, couple this with the fact that they are less likely to have significant information passed to them early, they rely on speculation, personality and past analysis to fill the time.
The Twitterati are the most entertaining and the most likely to have early money on big deals, they are also the most likely to be manipulated by internal sources as there is less downside for the source to sell furries as they are only taking down a character rather than a journos/insiders career. They most likely all have some actual sources.
As for our trades, unfortunately we don't do them in a vacuum, there is exchange value vs use value, there is also exchange value vs available value. The Danger trade was a victim of this, horrible result for us but there wasn't a lot more, holding out for a future 1st instead of the 2nd and Gore would of been better.

I'd like to see us bring in a couple ready made players to fill the holes left by Smith, Lever and Cameron. Although Dodee/Keath should be able to do the Lever role, Hampton could replace Cameron and the Seed after a full preseason will play in a similar way to smith.

Sit back and enjoy, we are not going to atone for September in October.

I would prefer all states have AFL funded TAC Cup style programs over AFL clubs running academies.

If all clubs academies why bother having a draft?

We may as well replicate the NRL system if we had further down the "Academies route"

Agree with the sentiment of the four year contract for all draftees. But we are seeing players demand a trade mid contract and effectively becoming a Free Agent by setting a club of choice.

Of course you could say no trading of these players during that period. But what happens if the club wants to trade or delist them?

I don't think we have enough quality to create a whole competition but we could enter a team or maybe 2 in the Victorian comp. it won't be cheap, but it's doable IMO

Ive suggested it before but to my knowledge no one agreed with it. I think it has merit. Our clubs do a shit job of developing players because they get next to nothing for it. I reckon it needs to be taken out of their hands.

Watts still not locked into Power. Geelong look like they are firming.

Ablett heading to Geelong.

Cameron looking likely to Brisbane.

Hodge committed to Brisbane.

Schache wants out of Brisbane.

Swallow looking at Gold Coast now?

Weller wanting Gold Coast.

Stringer probably going to Essendon - Geelong don't have the picks.

Gibbs still even money - staying or going.

Kennedy trying to get to Carlton.

Who are we missing? Someone will probably crop up in the next day or so.

I love listening to Connors on trade radio. All the clubs are evil and don't care about player. If he wasn't so busy fattening up the top few players purses he might just realise clubs need to move out players out who are half perform and take up cap space, to fit others into their caps.

I can't see that we would have played either of these guys this year IMO. Don almost always goes for older players to pick from (Keith, Greenwood, McKay, Seed, Beech over Wigg, Doedee, Galucci, Polholke)

Is there a way to keep this list at the top of page, it would be interesting to see how it goes,
