Do you reckon the AFC have ever identified a need, identified a player at another club (perhaps a club in the lower ranks or rebuilding), and tried to recruit him despite that player having never requested a trade to us?

Is that what Hawthorn did with Gunston?

I reckon the Hawks players could be a target right now. They have gun players, who likely won't have long enough to make their next flag tilt.

Why does a player need to demand a trade here to be a target for us?

He was a FA which brought him to our attention. I mean a player that simply fits a need with no other reason. I reckon we don't do enough needs recruiting. We seem to think anyone who isn't a SA boy or doesn't nominate us is not a viable option. Do we ever try and recruit a Luke Breust just because we need someone like him?

Hawks have a lot of players on stupid contracts, take the hawks out of your post and it will be good

I think that's absolutely what we do. We don't just go and grab anybody and everybody just for the sake of it. People assuming that we just sit on our hands and do nothing unless a player is begging to come here don't have a true understanding of what is involved.

So who have we been trying to get?

I don't work in the Crows recruiting department, so I can't tell you. Our club gives absolutely nothing to the media these days, so why on earth would they leak info regarding who they have spoken with in an attempt to lure them to this club ?? No club, manager or player leaks this info unless they see that it will advantage them to some degree. You think the only players courted by other clubs this year was Dusty, Kelly and Lever ?? Pls.

Obviously we don't know this years but I think we targetted Hampton, Seedsman and Cheney over the last few years. And prior Jacobs, Lynch , Jenkins.
Given we should have known one or two players were leaving this year I would hope we are very confident of landing at least 1 player who would sit in our best 12

Ok "Out of town Crow", you gave me a slight troll earlier about my negativity ;) kudos. To be truthful I probably haven't posted anything positive since the GF, but seriously what do 'think' will be the outcome
for the Crows come Thursday arvo.
Here's what I think will happen.
No Gibbs; price will be too high again and we'll say no.
No Francis. Essendon will ask too much and we'll say no.
Cameron, I'm not sure but I suspect we'll settle for 18/19, but it wouldn't surprise me if we said no, kept him and he played like crap next year then we lose him anyway for far less. We'll take those picks to the draft and come out with the
"Organic growth" line again. I hope I'm wrong but to quote every Star Wars film "I've got a bad feeling about this."
A question relating to "price too high" - if we knew Rory Sloane was leaving next year what would we trade him for (assuming draft picks only)

I think occasionally, at least after the fact, it would get out.

Can't recall anyone saying that last year the Crows tried to lure anyone, ever

These are some good examples of under utilised players we have recruited and developed. Maybe we haven't been in this position all that often, where we need ready made players to slot into holes in our 22. We seem to be fixated on Gibbs when there are many others who we could target but don't seem to.

I'm pretty sure Gibbs didn't fall into our lap like we tried to play it out publicly.

Ried knew his contract structure and knew we could increase his salary a few hundred thousand without overpaying him. then we targeted him.

Gibbs Dad pretty much confirmed it in an Advertiser interview last trade period by saying we had had a few cracks previously but never got it right but we did this time. I dont think we got it right simply by saying ok when asked

Holy crap, Tippett in contracted to the Swans until 2020! That deal is really going to end badly for them.

He’s 31 now and headed in for an ankle reconstruction.
Absolutely outrageous contract for Tippett. Another three years! Hahahahah

If you recall last year we were pushing good players out of the door to build cap space and because we didnt have room on our list. While it is nice to think we should go after someone each year look at players like Wright, Henderson and Lyon - and quite possibly Menzel and Wigg this year - who we have delisted but have been great pick ups at other clubs. We havent chased many because we havent needed too. Still need space on your list for 10 draftee level players to even out the salary cap and for squad development.
Likely to be the same this year - minimal delistings with (hopefully) Gibbs, Edwards, pick 10 coming in (Keath and Greenwood for the other 2 spots) and even next year we already have a spot taken with Ben Jarman to be elevated. Assuming Sloane leaves we will have a bevy of picks again with minimal available spots.

Agree we have been fixated on Gibbs - but he is easily the best SA born player not playing in SA at the moment - Grundy the only other player who would feature in his teams top 7-8

The channel 7 news said that Gibbs wont happen and Crows wont release Cameron unless they get a mind blowing deal. Suggested that pick 12 might not even get it done

Errr Hawks were into Gunston well before he told us he is out.

What you are suggesting doesn’t really happen with any clubs out there. Players are targeted 12-18 months out by clubs who are targeting them to bring them into their side.

Not sure if you're being serious here.

Its looking like we aren't bringing in any new players and are using this trade period to load up on draft picks for this year and next year. I would be extremely surprised if we landed gibbs now, cant see it happening.
