I might be old fashioned and old schooled but I think there is a lot of meaning to being a one club player. My stomach turns at the thought of any of Roo, McLeod, Hart, Smart, Edwards etc not being a one club player. IMHO, it is a very special honour and one that we will rarely see in modern day football.

If Sloane was leave for Victoria, I would be absolutely shattered. However, if we wins us a premiership before he leaves, I will forever be grateful for what he has done for this club. He would always be loved by this supporter and would never cop boos from me just like Kane Johnson never copped any boos from me. I always had the respect and soft spot for the lad.

Losing Sloane would be a MASSIVE blow for the club but if he helps us win a flag or two, he goes with my respect and love. I would still be shattered and still be disappointed that he is not going to be a one club player but none the less grateful for what he has given us over the years and the success he brought to the club.

Everyone loves Sloaney. He is like a modern day version of Lenny Hayes.

There's certainly some legs to the Sloane movement end of 2018. If you didn't notice Belinda's burgeoning TV career at the Brownlows then don't know what to tell you.

By then there's 1, maybe even 2 flags in the cabinet. A GF appearance at a minimum.

It will be an entirely different exit to any others imo. Together with Tex and DT, he will have held this PG together during the worst of times and pulled them up to where they are now.

Will be waved goodbye with a smile and will never cop boos at AO.
But what if we have won 2 by then? Would he not want a chance at the 3peat?

I'd still be devastated if he left, regardless of what happens from here. One club player and will always be regarded as a true champion.... leaves and he will forever have that asterisk next to his name unfortunately.

17 goals on top of playing as a mid is ok though. Pretty much the same as Rory S and Gibbs from memory.

Anyway, your comment was that he cannot play as a forward, when actually he can.
Id like to know how many goals he kicked from the midfield.
He will not be played forward in any team in the AFL.
Maybe to rest, but never as a permanent forward.

As per this post and Stiffy's above - would hate to see him go.

Bio:

INTRODUCTION
After being initially overlooked by AFL recruiters as a junior, Tom Rockliff has proven to be one of the Lions' greatest success stories in recent times. The once clever and creative midfielder/forward has become an elite runner who can accumulate plenty of the ball. The 2011 Club Champion now forms a critical part of the Lions' promising midfield brigade.

BACKGROUND
• Hailing from Benalla in country Victoria, Tom Rockliff is a natural footballer who achieved almost everything during his final year as a junior footballer.

• He was a standout for the Murray Bushrangers in the TAC Cup U18 competition, kicking a competition-high 59 goals as a small forward and averaging 23 disposals per match.

• He kicked four or more goals on eight occasions including a season-high eight goals against the Sandringham Dragons in Round 13.

• He also helped lead the Bushrangers to their first TAC Cup premiership since 1998 with 30 possessions and four goals in the U18 Grand Final. His super individual performance was overshadowed only by team-mate Steele Sidebottom, whose 10 goal effort from the midfield earned best-on-ground honours.

• His consistent season with the Bushrangers culminated in him winning the Club’s Best & Fairest award – the John Byrne Medal – ahead of highly fancied team-mates Jack Ziebell and Sidebottom.

• He also represented Victoria Country in the 2008 NAB U18 championships where he ranked second overall for goals and first in score assists.

• He was largely considered to feature in the first two rounds of the 2008 National Draft – but was surprisingly overlooked by all 16 AFL clubs at the selection meeting.

• With one remaining spot on their senior list, the Lions earmarked the country Victorian and eventually drafted him with their first selection (Pick No.5 overall) in the 2008 Pre-Season Draft in December.

You need to go and do your research to support your argument .. his existing role at Brisbane was to help the young mid group. He was played most of the year from round 6 or 8 with a banged up shoulder. He has had a full reconstruction since the season ended.

The point is, you say he's not a forwards arsehole. When in fact most believe he's quite capable of playing there.

Sloane, along with Walker, is the heart & soul of this club. Dangerfield was always a bit aloof and not invested emotionally. Sloane is. If he was even acknowledging the possibility of walking out as a free agent to another club, it would change everything I feel about the man.

Yeah I know.

But whyyyyyyyy now?! Just why??

He's stayed for this long through thick and thin. We are at our peak.

No offence to Belinda or anything, but surely a media career can wait another 2-3 years while we are killing it....SURELY?!

After he's finished do whatever the ****you want. The media isnt going anywhere, I'm sure she will still have plenty of job offers lined up!

He's one of the biggest characters and best players we've had at the club. Success or no success it would absolutely suck dogs balls to see him leave for a mere media career for Belinda that could wait. Again, no offence meant but yeah.... not liking this talk at all.

This goes back to the FIFO conversation. Why not explore it? He has been in the program long enough to look after himself to some degree. He has support locally in Melbourne with List Management. Fly over once a week for main training. Travel for games. Home every other night.

Conversation came up a few weeks ago. A Sydney player quite a few years back used to fly in and out of Melbourne while playing for Sydney. Stuart Mayfield from memory (DABM)?

Yeah i made it bigger, bolded it and made it red for you.
Maybe have a look at the other guys listed there and wonder why he had to play forward.

I have no problem with that.

Can we go back to where you started. You said that Rockliff isn't a forwards arsehole. A number of people don't agree with you. Some back ground info was provided to support that belief.

Look times have moved on. This is just not a viable option in current age where it is such a professional and closely monitored environment. The days of player living in one city and playing in another over the weekend are long gone.
Why can't Mrs sloane do media in adelaide?
She is but lets be honest, the opportunities for her career are MUCH MUCH greater in Melbourne than they are here and those opportunities might not be there in 3-4 years time.

She is doing a lot of commuting between Adelaide and Melbourne as it is and as someone who does travel a fair bit due to work, I can tell you its a pain in the ass especially if you are doing it every week.

Rockliffs was a small forward in a similar vein to Porplyzia was a small forward. He's more of your undersized marking forward than a small forward in the Betts mold. Rockliff would be far better off as a midfielder who rotates forward on occasion, not permanently.

I also can't see Rockliff being a great pick up for Port, already struggling to fit Boak, who's a gun inside mid, into their midfield rotations, I don't see how adding another predominantly inside mid is going to help anything. They need to strengthen both mid and forward lines. Similar to how Ryder made Lobbe an overpaid redundant player, Rockliff would force an Ebert or Boak to become more outside, whilst hats not their games and thus have overpaid average flanker/winger types.

Deadset, should be working on finding another gun forward or two so that Gray and Wingard don't need to prop up heir forward line all the time. And when I say gun forward, I don't mean a flakey, inconsistent, but flashy half forward in Motlop...
