2017 Game Plan

Our defenders (the back six inside defensive 50) are great.

Our defense (the rest of the side helping out the defenders by concentrating on making sure they pressure the ball carrier through forward and midfield) is not.

That's why you get your easy overlaps through the midfield like you mention. Who is tracking those runners? "Who cares, it's somebody else's problem," says our midfield. No, it's YOUR problem. Complementary football says that the midfield helps out the defense as much as possible. That was something that we could control (our potency in attack was a direct result of lack of clearance numbers) and we dropped the ball. Again.

So while top eight teams would push opposition forwards into the kind of spaces we deride our team for being pushed towards (pockets), making it harder for the forwards to create scoring shots, we would roll out the red carpet and say 'come in to our defensive 50 and put our defenders under pressure'.

If we're in pursuit of mastery, defense is where it starts. Defense creates EVERYTHING, because every goal you don't concede is one you don't have to score.
Hope you don't mind me asking this. Is the devise you are using, auto correcting, Defence into american Defense

Although we did win the clearances overall 12times (lost 10)

Absolutely......having said that a lot of the time our players were setting up for an attacking run when the ball was horribly turned over leaving free opposition all over the place
Defense creates EVERYTHING
And that has been the message from the club since Ken came in....everything flows on from getting the defensive mechanisms right....
Let's hope we get them right!
It's more than just one area we need to improve on it's 3,4,5....good news is we were within a kick of a GF 3 years ago and I think we have better personnel today.
Yes we have had 2 ordinary years.... we need to remember the lessons and move on....hopefully we can put it together and return to September action where we belong!

Also, getting some form of home ground advantage would help too. Our free for/free against is a paltry +1.3 on average at home. Away, its -6.5.

Can we see a new kick in strategy? Maybe might be a idea. Having read posts about our defence. Maybe mix that up to get the ball out of there instead of the long bomb to 55 metres out which invariably lead to a stoppage and our defence being under constant pressure. There are enough good kicks and targets there.

Went to the second Showdown last year, old mate next to me was damn near having a fit watching the kickouts, why have a player like Pittard kick out if we tell him to bomb it on the back flank, he's more than capable of hitting up any target within 60m so let him do it.

In 2014 most players were hungry and committed. This has not been the case since. Still have some players to shed before we mount a challenge

I thought with our kick ins last year we hesitated when we had a free player then we just looked around and waited before bombing it long. In 13'/14' we seemed to kick in fast and take a lot more risks which, when it payed off, turned straight into an attacking run down to whole ground.

Yeh I don't know much about the kick in tactics except ours are horrible
Maybe with Ryder the Hoff and a tall back ( who is our best marking back?) all leading into space and then a short option and an up the guts option .
What we agree on though is we get this part right we are on the way to a mark in our F50 most times
We get this part wrong and the ball is on its way back and pressure on our defence.

Kick ins have been an issue since the Choco era. Surely it isn't so hard to fix?

Kick ins are symptomatic of lack of movement and cohesion through the midfield, IMO.

Generally, teams are reluctant to kick short because it gives opposition sides the opportunity to press the ball into the forward line. So they kick it to the best contested mark in the side. For the majority of teams that is the ruck. But our ruck was missing in 2016 and was a disgraceful contested mark in 2015...which is why it never worked.

What is meant to happen is either the ruck marks it virtually unopposed or the opposition ruck goes with him, in which case the midfield is now required to run to space and exploit the fact that the opposition ruck is now pushed up on a wing instead of dropping into the middle of the ground to guard the corridor.

Without a decent contested mark in Ryder, opposition sides were free to not only drop their ruck into the hole but also swarm around the ball with midfielders who are only as good at the contested grab as we are...so it became a 50/50 proposition at best whether we would mark the ball or not, which led to stifled movement through the midfield since you really need to be on your bike before the ball reaches the intend target to create forward options etc.

Just chalk it up to yet another thing that will drastically improve with no change at all to the gameplan in 2017.

I really don't get all the 'it'd be great if Lobbe could earn his role back' stuff. AFL is a competitive business, and we can only play one ruck at a time, especially with the new third man up rule.

Imagine for a second you were an Adelaide United fan (gross). Eugene Galekovic is between the sticks. He's competent, but he's no world beater. Suddenly, there's a steroid abuse scandal in the Bundesliga and Manuel Neuer decides to come to the A-League to get away from it all.

The correct response: "Gee, it's awesome that we're going to have Manuel Neuer in goals for us"
The soft response: "Galekovic is such a hard worker, I hope he can earn his way back into the side. Then we can use Neuer to fill the hole at right back".

It'd be great if Lobbe can dominate the SANFL and fill a role for us if Ryder gets injured or suspended. That's the absolute best thing he can do for us in 2017. If he takes away Ryder's ruck minutes by 'earning his spot back', he'll be doing more harm than good.
Goalkeeper in soccer is a much more specialised position than ruck in football. Maybe a better analogy is a wicket keeper in cricket where you could arguably carry a second keeper if they could bat.

Your argument still stands. The Aussies could have kept Healy on and played Gilchrist as a batsman, but didn't.

I think having the Ruckman and Key Position players available will put us well on track to be a top 8 side in 2017.

2 close games against West Coast and Bulldogs we lost were due to having Redpath and Kenedy having a filed day on our young defense. Having Hombsche, Jonas, Clurey and Trengrove all fit will shore up our defence and with Lobbe and Ryder both fit, they can drop off to add height. Add in the fact our midfielders were setting up to lose the ruck contest at every center bounce.

I cant wait to see Ryder resting next to Dixon with Young and Wingard crumbing. Add in R Grey, Impey and Neade.

Think this year heavily depends on having a fit list as we dont seem to have ready made Key postion players.

Gameplan for 2017

Win the ruck
Get in and under
Kick it in early to the forwards
Defend like a terrior

Aussie rules isnt exactly brain surgery stuff

TJ is chronically underrated here. The fact that he can defend big and small forwards gives the defence a lot of flexibility and means we can always find other options if a certain match up down back is not working. With Jackson and Carlile out of the defence, his experience is invaluable down back. When Pittard is not on the ground, TJ is our most experienced defender.

His role in the leadership group makes it clear to me that he is an important voice down back, no doubt calling the match ups before the coaches can get messages down to the ground. He is not keeping Austin and Clurey out of the team; he is providing the leadership and guidance needed to ensure they are able to fill their role in the team.
