Locks are Hombsch, Pittard, every game.
Tall defenders rotate between Trengove, Clurey and Austin depending on matchup a form and injury. Jonas as the swing man in defense. Broadbent, DBJ and Krakouer to be other 3 main smalls. Bonner to be blooded.

Thats 8 + Bonner and taking out Trengove.

Curious to see people's best back 6/7 in position.

This is what I had....

B: Darcy Byrne-Jones, Jack Hombsch , Jasper Pittard
HB: Hamish Hartlett, Jackson Trengove , Matthew Broadbent

...with Jonas on the bench as the tall option for sides with 3 big forwards, in which case one of DBJ or Broady would go....match ups!
I like Clurey and Austin as cover for injuries to Hombsch and Trengrove. Or good additions if Trengrove is needed elsewhere!
I don't mind losing Hamish to the midfield in the case of injuries/form/suspension there, with Jonas onto the flank and Bonner in.
Impy as cover for small forwards that get away from DBJ mid game or injuries/suspension/form of our mid sized backs
Kraks is on the bench....not sure how to play this....more I think about it though the more I want an in form Hamish on the ball and Krak at HBF!

TJ is chronically underrated here
I rate him

I rate his ability but not his temperament.

TJ is chronically underrated here. The fact that he can defend big and small forwards gives the defence a lot of flexibility and means we can always find other options if a certain match up down back is not working. With Jackson and Carlile out of the defence, his experience is invaluable down back. When Pittard is not on the ground, TJ is our most experienced defender.

His role in the leadership group makes it clear to me that he is an important voice down back, no doubt calling the match ups before the coaches can get messages down to the ground. He is not keeping Austin and Clurey out of the team; he is providing the leadership and guidance needed to ensure they are able to fill their role in the team.

I don't think it's a case of underrating Jonas, it's more the idea that there are two younger fellas (Austin and Clurey) knocking on the door, who are improving year by year.

TJ is solid, good one on one, but a bit slow, his kicking is also not elite. At 83 games, he is ok. On the other hand, If Austin or Clurey play 83 games, or another 2-3 seasons in TJs spot will they provide more? Could either of these kids become better players than TJ- If yes, play them now...

And yep, I like your leadership argument. We lack match winning leaders. TJ can Marshall the troops till the cows come home, but he also needs to lead by ripping the game to shreds, and dominating the play, bringing other younger players into the game... Lead by example. Like Greg Phillips. I don't think he does this enough...

Everything I've read about Joe Atley is that he offers some toughness around the ball that we've lacked in recent seasons. Can anybody see him playing round 1 against Sydney? Trouble is, who would he force out of the side?

Also, getting some form of home ground advantage would help too. Our free for/free against is a paltry +1.3 on average at home. Away, its -6.5.

If we got the Subiaco rub we'd have what, 10 flags?

*Tredrea/Gray/Wingard gets murdered* "lol nah, there was nothing in it"

*Judd/Kennedy/Shuey gets breathed on* "it's 50 metres and a report!"

Do I hear a hitnt of cynicism there Sir?

A big part of the reason we struggle to defend the ball in transition is that teams know we're gonna blaze away to zero advantage going forward, so they can setup to break and smash us on the counter.

Our players aren't always as hardworking as they should be, but we are outnumbered more often than not due to tactical issues as opposed to fitness issues.

Curious to see people's best back 6/7 in position.

For mine, the best defenses are the ones that work together well as a team - the guys that can switch and cover so that at no time does a player get isolated one on one against an opponent.

Logan Austin and Jack Hombsch were 26th and 27th across the entire league in one percenters despite playing only half the season each. To put what they did in perspective, if they kept up the same pace and played every single game, they would have had over 200 spoils (which is really what a one percenter is for a defender) and been in the same category as Talia, Rance, Rampe and Gibson. For me, that makes them absolute locks for full back and one of the back pockets, because it shows a commitment to defense and moving to help cover opponents. The other back pocket spot belongs to Jonas due to his performance in the same area and to limit the exposure of his lack of pace.

So my back line is:

B: Jonas Austin Hombsch

Which WILL become the best back three in the league, mark my words.

Across half back, you need players who have speed but also can slide across and help cover as well. If we go back to the one percenter stats, Pittard was 25th in the league with 112, but also 5th in the league for meters gained. That's the sort of ratios we want to see across the half back line. To that end, I'm playing Broadbent and Pittard in the attacking half back roles, with Trengove as the anchor.

HB: Broadbent Trengove Pittard

Then, just in front of them, in the newly created position of Defensive Midfielder, I'm playing Clurey and Hartlett - so a +2 in defence that push into the midfield:

DM: Hartlett Clurey

These are the guys who fold back behind Pittard and Broadbent when those players push up into attack. They create space and options but primarily operate in the defensive half of the ground.

On the bench I've got Krakouer who can fill virtually every position listed except for FB and CHB (and Hombsch would slide across for Austin and Clurey would move back into HB if that happened). When Trengove moves into ruck, either Krak comes on the ground and we shift Clurey into Trengove's spot or shift Westhoff back.

Where is Byrne-Jones and Bonner? They are depth players for a premiership contender. In my opinion, this is the defensive structure that would win us the flag. Resilient across the back, attacking across half-back without being kamikaze.

195, 193, 193cm....too tall and yes a bit slow....who gets the small forward
?

I'm starting to think this also with DBJ....I like what he did last year but with a full compliment we need to start with the experienced and work from there.

DM: Hartlett Clurey
Where do they line up at centre bounces?
IMO we may run the risk of their direct opponent kicking it over their heads as they run free through the middle......one loose man back is fine but taken from forward, usually temporary to halt a run on.....need more info to be convince of your plan here......

I'd like to see Hartlett in the middle predominantly - going back to defence for specific shutdown jobs only if required within a game. If he does play defence.. I'd like to see him do the kickins.... (50/50 with krak)

Powell-Pepper ahead of him based on 2016 form at WAFL level.

Let's see Atley in a few SANFL games against big bodies.
