If Sam Reid is getting offers around $800k then Martin on $1.6m is fair value.
Reid is even more crazy at 800k tho
Good business expanding into an untapped market with potential to grow. Plonking the Giants in Tasmania would have been nice but too small a market.
Giants have 20k plus members now so it's a success of soughts.
Also the AFL are running a slick juniors program developing/introducing the game in Sydney. Will take time as to whether that pays off.

I agree the $ is no big deal.
I'm not so sure the term is either anymore. A lot of people do worry about the term. But 4 years in, not so much anymore.
Everyone's real beef over the last 4 years has been with the effect of so much cap money going to one or two individuals (cue talk of forcing out Mumford, Mitchell, McVeigh etc etc).
$1.6m to Dusty even under the new cap would essentially be the same thing. Even $1m to he combined with Cale Hooker's contract at Ess would be identical to the buddy Tippo set up we have.
Personally, I can't see too many clubs not having 20% of their cap going to a couple of franchise players in the near future.
We only needed to offer 9 years as it was a deal that broke the mould. If we were chasing a similar player today no way we'd need to offer 9 years.
Going forward 5 and 6 year deals will still be the norm. And with only 5 years left on Buddy now he'll just be one of the top end talent crew.
The problem with free agency is that it creates an unhealthy value on a player to leave a club.

Buddy turned 30 in January. Burgoyne turns 35 in October this year with talk he may go on.

According to this table he will get $1.2M in 2018 as well as this season, then goes to $1.3M in 2019. By 2021, players will be on $2M & the cap will be another 10% higher than it will be in 2018. Tippett will be long gone by 2019. Even if Tippett is on the 800K people suggest he is on, the increase in the cap would have been enough to sign players we wanted to keep by bumping the salary in year 2019. Could have done this with Tom & may do it with Jones & Reid if we think they are worth it.
