2017 GST Classifications

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Thanks Russian, when do you let us know what teams we look at now?

Did I miss the point here? I see a lot of smalls in the list of players going into the 2nd selection stage.

Is the goalkicker/stopper classification not to determine who is allowed to be named in key positions?
The idea is this becomes a discussion thread for things like this for a week, then the jury voting will start

And can we appeal? Trengove and Blicavs not tappers jeebus. Trengove played most of the year as Ports first ruck and Blicavs I agree is a unique player but at 200cm+ surely he's a tapper
I'm thinking one appeal per team, requires a unanimous jury vote to be successful.

From initial thoughts Fyfe definitely isn't a goalkicker.

From my team Tippett and Schoenmakers deserve multiple positions. Kurt I was shocked wasn't given it.

My opinion on the Gold Coast players to be voted on (this is assuming goal kickers and stoppers are for kpp classification)...

Goalkickers
Mason Cox - Yes, obviously. He played key forward over Cloke last year
Majak Daw - Yes, another obvious one. He did a share of the ruckwork last year but anyone who watched his games knows he primarily played as a key forward.
Brett Deledio - No. Small marking forward but definitely not key forward.
Mitchell Hannan - No. High marking medium forward who runs through the midfield.
Jeremy Howe - Tougher one. He's 190cm so has the height and leap & grab of a key forward and has played the role for Melbourne but that's not likely to be his role again at Collingwood. I'd say no personally, but feel free to surprise me.

Stoppers
Josh Rotham - Yes. He probably won't play many games anyway, but he's 192cm and is able to play on talls and smalls depending on who is the best matchup for him. Can understand people not realising he often plays on the talls because he's a great rebounding defender.
Zach Tuohy - He was actually named at CHB for a month or so at Carlton but I wouldn't call him a key defender, so no.
Elliot Yeo - Clearly not his preferred role although he has played as a key defender but that was due to injury to pretty much all other options. I hope he never plays kpp again because I want him getting possessions!

Tappers (by TM club)
Mason Cox - Yes. played key forward but still averaged over 7 hit outs per game so clearly did his share of ruckwork. Actually, he is a ruckman and him playing up forward was a massive surprise. He just happened to fill more of a need up forward last season so is a pretty clear goalkicker/tapper.

Can't play one position let alone multi :p:D

Goalkickers (by TM club)
Todd Marshall (Dragon Island Southerners)
Shaun McKernan (Dragon Island Southerners)
Willie Rioli (Dragon Island Southerners)
Shane Yarran (Dragon Island Southerners)

Stoppers (by TM club)
Andrew Mackie (Dragon Island Southerners)
Harrison Marsh (Dragon Island Southerners)
Todd Marshall: gotta be a goalkicker.
PORT ADELAIDE has taken Todd Marshall with its first pick in the 2016 AFL Draft.
The 18-year-old tall forward, compared to Justin Westhoff by AFL talent managers, was selected at No. 16 after academy bids by the GWS Giants and Gold Coast relegated the Power down the order from their original pick No. 14.

Shaun McKernan: gotta be a goalkicker.
Shaun McKernan was a revelation for the team this year. Taken in the rookie draft, McKernan was initially recruited as a ruck but demonstrated early his potential to also move forward and kick goals.
http://www.essendonfc.com.au/player-profile/shaun-mckernan

Willie Rioli: small forward, not a goalkicker as described in the rules for GST classification.
PLAYER BIO
Former Club:
Glenelg
Age: 21
Height: 177cm
Weight: 75kg
Position: Forward

Shane Yarran: has retired so irrelevant.

Andrew Mackie: has never played key defender in any of his nearly 300 AFL games. In fact in most cases he's had three key defenders playing alongside him.

Harry Marsh: listed as a small/medium defender in AFL player ratings, and is 189cm tall, so I think he is not a stopper. However he filled a KPP spot in Sydney's team in 2016 when Ted Richards was out injured.

I agree, Fyfe should not be a goalkicker.

Tippett should be G/T and Shoey should be G/S.
Launceston looking for support for Patrick Ryder to be classified G & T
In my opinion Ryder is a T, though Port acquired him intending him to be a G/T, aand so I think that is what he should be classified as, a G/T.
My opinion on the Gold Coast players to be voted on (this is assuming goal kickers and stoppers are for kpp classification)...

Agree with Cox (G/T), Daw (G/T), Deledio (not a G), Hannan (not a G), Howe (not a S or G), Rotham (S), Tuohy (not a S), Yeo (not a S)

Why did you try and trade for him then ;)

Matthew Allen is a 193 cm forward, so should be a Goalkicker.

Cameron Pederson played nine games in 2016. 193 cm marking KPP. Played in attack for all or part of the game against GWS, Essendon, Collingwood, Richmond, St Kilda, Gold Coast (where he kicked three goals) and Hawthorn. Could be rated as a Goalkicker (KPF).

As far as Geelong is concerned, regarding those still to be decided:

Nathan Fyfe (Geelong) - Shouldn't qualify as a goalkicker
Ben McKay (Geelong) - recruited as a key forward, should be eligible as a goalkicker
Daniel Menzel (Geelong) - from my understanding of the purpose of the GST rules, I don't think he should qualify as a goalkicker
Steven Motlop (Geelong) - from my understanding of the purpose of the GST rules, I don't think he should qualify as a goalkicker
Mason Wood (Geelong) - I would argue that he should qualify as a goalkicker given his style of play, average of goals, and role within the team now as one of the tall forward focal points alongside Ben Brown and Jarrad Waite. Not dissimilar to someone like Jack Darling or Shane Kersten.

Ben McKay (Geelong) - as stated above, my understanding is that he was recruited as a key forward, so he shouldn't be eligible as a stopper
Lewis Melican (Geelong) - recruited as a key back, should be eligible as a stopper
Harry Taylor (v) (Geelong) - couldn't believe he didn't qualify at first. He's only been the AA CHB a couple of times...
Jackson Thurlow (Geelong) - he's a half back flanker, shouldn't be a stopper

Charlie Curnow (Melbourne) - Drafted as a key forward who can potentially go into the midfield later. At the very least he's a medium marking forward type.
Tory Dickson (Melbourne) - Although short he plays as a lead up forward. I'm pretty 50/50 on whether he deserves goalkicker status.

I would've had Sinclair as a goalkicker. Played second ruck to Tippett when he was in which was mainly forward.

Mitchell W Brown (Melbourne) - Definitely should get stopper status. Played key back for Essendon for half the year and is a strong chance of being the third tall in defence in 2017.
Tomas Gorter (Melbourne) - I was under the impression he was more of a runner. Don't know much about him though.
Ben Long (Melbourne) - As above.

Reckon Sam Reid should've been a shot at stopper. Played majority back in 2015 IIRC.

I have no problem with any of the Ballarat definite GST players, although I would potentially add a second position to some of them. When I was selecting players for GST my basis for selection was pretty much whether I would be comfortable seeing the selected player named in that key position (Ruck, KPF, KPD). Nothing too scientific about it when I was doing it and it meant I was perhaps a touch on the generous side when deciding.

The thoughts on my 2nd Rd GST players:

Goalkicker:
Hayden Crozier - No. Not a key position player and played in deence at the end of the 2016 season.
Harrison Macreadie - No. He was drafted by Carlton as a key defender.
Jordan Roughead - Yes. Plays as a key forward for large portions of the game when resting from ruck duties. Pretty much interchanges with Tom Boyd.

Stopper:
Harrison Macreadie - Yes, as per my comments on him above.

Tapper:
Sam Day - Maybe. He certainly plays as the ruckman some of the time but I'd argue he is more of a swingman for the Suns and as such should probably have stopper added to his goalkicker status. He is certainly one of the few players you could put an argument forward for all three GST positions but I think in reality he is more of a goalkicker/stopper.

And for potential further positions for players not listed:

Goalkciker:

Tom Hickey - Like Roughead, he plays a lot as a key forward when resting from ruck duties.
Tim English - Definitely primarily a ruckman, but I think it's a lot more likely we see him play as a key forward in 2017, a bit like Peter Wright did/does.

Stopper:

Sam Day - As per my comments on him above.

So if we're appealing our own players.....

Breust- I had him down as a goalkicker in my planning. He played as a third tall, lead up sort of role with no Roughead.

Maibaum- Definitely drafted him as a stopper. Played as a lockdown tall in Under 18s last year.
http://www.sydneyswans.com.au/news/2016-11-25/pick-45-jack-maibaum

Cameron- Again, when I drafted him I thought he would be guaranteed tapper status. The dude is 204cm!

Smith- Played 2 games a number one ruckman when Stef was out.. Definitely a tapper.

Roughead- Was a pinch hitter in the ruck. Played everywhere. I would think he rucks enough to get tapper status.

Apeness- Not sure. He is a big boy but I think more of a forward. Had hitouts in 3 of his 7 AFL games though so on the fence. Pinch hitter I think.

It was mentioned earlier that a lot of 1st year players were missed completely.
Does anyone have any of these on their lists?

I have two that are definitely GST in my opinion...

Timm House (Gee) - G and possibly S
Ryan Abbott (Gee) - T

http://www.geelongadvertiser.com.au...h/news-story/fa0f6734b9d596563e45f307a05a4cc1
"Selwood labelled Abbott the best ruckman in the GFL and also believes House has the potential to hold down a key position role at either end of the ground."

http://www.geelongadvertiser.com.au...t/news-story/00b68eb6153f4ba3fbe9acf88aa98acc
"House, a 21 year-old 194cm, 95kg power forward originally from Western Australia, and Abbott, a 25 year-old 200cm ruckman who has been a star for Grovedale in the GFL for the last few years, also played games for the Cats’ VFL last season and had been secretly on the club’s radar."

Ok i guess I'll have a look at mine

Goalkicker
Paul Puopolo (Gippsland Sharks) - Looking at who is a Goalkicker, would suggest no, he's more of a small
Cyril Rioli (Gippsland Sharks) - Same as above - Only one who could possibly classify the same is Alex Fasolo - Was a goal kicker this year but the rules have been shifted so probably wouldn't be anymore
Zach Sproule (Gippsland Sharks) - Plays more as a defender, so would say he shouldn't be a Goalkicker

Stopper
Tom Ruggles ® (Gippsland Sharks) - Played more as a small defender, so probably wouldn't satisfy
Zach Sproule (Gippsland Sharks) - Yes, plays as a 2nd/3rd Defender so would satisfy stopper
Joshua Wagner (Gippsland Sharks) - Would've said he's more of a flanker, so probably not a stopper

Tapper
Oscar McInerney (Gippsland Sharks) - he's over 200cm, he plays as a ruckman for 70-80% of all games, would certainly satisfy the tapper requirements

I did alright drafted Kerr, Watson & Darcy who were all given GST status.

With regards to my second round status

G - Hammelmann - didn't think of him as a goalkicker (didn't kick any last year)
Kent - kicked a reasonable number of goals last year (25) but more as a third tall/mobile forward would realistically think he was not a KPP

S - Bonner - definitely not a KPD
Hammelmann - as above at 197cm 88kg I think he should qualify as a KPD
Skinner - same as Hammelmann similar stats 197cm, 94kg but very raw

T- none

Appeal - Blicavs, agree a unique player, but plays 2nd ruck regularly for Geelong, 195 HO for the year would suggest this.

How many of those were 3rd man up? ;)

- Surprised that Fasolo got given goalkicker status, I wouldn't play him at FF or CHF.
- I think Jack Watts should be given goalkicker status. He settled into a key position post last season and kicked 38 goals, that's an average of 1.7 goals per game.
- Don't think Ryan Burton should qualify as a goalkicker. At best he's a mid-sized forward, not someone who holds down a key post.
- Depending on how we're classifying other swingmen (I'm thinking players like Hooker, Hurley, Schoenmakers, Taylor, Henderson), I think Ben Reid could be granted goalkicker status alongside his stopper status. I would be okay with the decision as long as it's consistent with those other players. If all are awarded dual status given their history of being player at either ends depending on circumstance then I think Reid falls into that category too.
- I think Nathan Vardy should be given goalkicker status given that he has played as a key forward at times during his career when not rucking.

- Again, surprised that Tom Langdon was given stopper status. At a stretch he might play on a tall forward as a defender, but really I think he's more of a mid-sized defender.
- I think Ryan Gardner should be given stopper status. He was drafted as a full back and if you look online you'll easily read that he has played his first season in the VFL as a key back on players like Travis Cloke.
- Jackson Nelson is a flanker/winger, not a key back

- Josh Walker doesn't ruck enough to qualify for tapper status, I think

Good point.

It will be interesting to see what ends up happening.

From a Geelong perspective, I would argue that Henderson has a history of being swung forward and back depending on team needs. He fulfilled that role in Carlton (see his seasons kicking multiple goals - 20-30 for the season) and late in the 2016 season he was swung forward a couple of times at Geelong. But in saying that, looking at season 2017 I think he is less likely to be used in that role and should settle as a key back more.

In saying that, Harry Taylor has been identified this off-season as more likely to be swung forward for 2017. He's been training with the forwards thus far and although to a lesser degree than Henderson, has some history of being swung forward too previously. Hence my earlier question about whether we would be able to apply for an updated GST status during the season.

It also really depends on how we want to use the dual status classification - are we talking about their ability to play there in case of emergencies or are we talking about week in week out core roles? If it's the former, then if someone like Taylor or Henderson (or any of the other names Bluesy has mentioned above) is given goalkicker status to go with stopper status, I don't think I should be naming them at a key forward post every week. But if it's more to create an option in the event that I lose all my natural key forward options and I want to know I can name them there as a last resort (similar to how their AFL teams would use them in circumstances) so as to not lose out on points for being unable to field a player in that position, then I understand that.

I guess my point is, we need to decide collectively and apply it consistently.

Oh, and while we're at it, I think Rhys Stanley should also qualify as a goalkicker alongside his tapper status - he's played enough as a second key forward option to Hawkins in the past two seasons while resting as a ruckman and has proven to be able to kick bags of goals.

Hi
Sorry I have been away for a while on holidays and as I am not participating in the rookie draft took it easy.
My GST players look all fine to me no complaints at all. Those that require 2rd round voting I'm not too stressed about as I think I have adequate coverage and looking at the players nominated I think I'd be lucky to have a case in the affirmative:).

Round 2 allocations below - each coach is required to vote yes or no for each player/position listed under their team nae via PM no later than 10 days from the time of this post (i.e. Sunday March 12). It takes 3/5 votes for a player to get that classification, except...

If there is a player on your list who did not get a classification in round 1 or make the lists below but you think he should have, you may nominate one player from your list in one position to be added to this list. This is to be done in this thread no later than 5 days from the time of this post (i.e. Tuesday March 7). It takes 5/5 votes for these players to get the nominated classification.
