Injuries?

Well, my hammys are a bit tight after all that work in the garden on the long weekend, but otherwise I'm okay.

What?

Oh, right.

Good to see Walker and Sloane coming back for GWS, and Booch (and the rest) should be good to go for the SANFL soon.

Was starting to wonder, looks like we'll be using a few more players than last year.

Interesting they consider Signorello AFL ready.

This was the exact quote regarding Cheney, Keath and Signorello:

"They’ll progress over the next couple of weeks and make themselves available (for selection at either level).”

The SANFL team could have a pretty strong midfield by round 2 or so. Thommo, Brouch, Gore, Greenwood, Knight, Wigg added with the draftees of Poholke, Gallucci and Sig. One of those guys will probably be in AFL team until Brouch is ready to go.

In terms of 'definitely unavailable' for R1, only Brad Crouch missing as a certain best 22 player. Obviously Doedee, Seedsman are others with claims (some would add Thompson).

Of the rest, Beech, Knight and Cheney will be technically available but their AFL R1 chances curtailed by injury in the lead up despite also likely featuring in our best 22 at some stage this year.

So depending on whether you are glass half full or empty we are missing up to 7 players but only one player who would likely finish in our top 10 B&F (B Crouch).

Injury creates opportunity.....
Most are very close anyway.
Yeah it's not as bad as it first seems.

The only worry for mine is timing with the fixture...almost certain top 4 team in GWS first up then Hawthorn away who despite potentially dropping away slightly always seem to break our hearts in Melb.

That would be 0-2 going into the Showdown.

The positive is by R3 (not accounting for new injuries) we should be cherry ripe.

If we are 2-1 after 3 rounds I'll be content (assuming we win the Showdown!!)

Atkins, Hampton and Charlie fill me with confidence.
And if Tex doesn't get up I reckon it will only be a week.

All these fringe guys were kept out of the team all year they are frothing.
not worried.

Ok so if we consider:

Definitely best 22/claim for best 22 are:
Walker, Sloane, BCrouch, Lever, Cheney, Knight, Seedsman.

Trying to earn as spot in the 22:
Gore, Beech, Keath, Doedee.
Thommo - to be used as emergency but not 1st choice moving forward.

Unlikely to be in 22 this year:
Signorello, Davis

So out of the 7 best 22 looks as though 2 definitely not available for round 1 or 2 - BCrouch & Seedsman
Other 5 are likely to be available but fitness/match fitness will dictate if they play or not.
Not bad really considering what we thought may be the case, taking the glass half full approach.

does anyone really think Keath is anywhere near it?

I think he's more in the 'unlikely to be in 22 this year' group

Thommo probably belongs in the "claim for best 22" group. Albeit, no longer "Definitely best 22".

I've placed him in the second group mainly from the media reports that he is not automatic first choice and that he will need to fight for his spot which flows to the no longer "Definitely best 22" you posted.

How does that make him any different to Knight or Seedsman?

You may be right, I've only grouped them based on the injury list. It was more about who will be missing from the best 22 or those vying for a best 22 spot from the injury list.

I see Thommo getting picked only because of a long injury list. I believe the club will rather/should invest time into the younger blokes. If all 3 are fit I would expect or should I say would prefer Knight or Seedsman be picked before Thommo.
These two would also provide the flexibility Pyke is looking for, Thommo doesn't do that.

I don't see it that way at all. Thommo isn't guaranteed a position in the 22, but he's in there fighting for it just like Knight and Seedsman. He's not there just to provide injury insurance, he's there to play AFL if his form & fitness justifies it.

If all 3 are fit, then it depends on form and the nature of the vacancy that needs filling. There is absolutely no certainty that Knight or Seedsman would be picked ahead of Thommo.
