Gregson is running 6-7 k’s now. And has put on 5kg in the gym. Linc is about to start running in the next few weeks. Fingers crossed these 2 can have a solid pre-season and stay injury free. We need them.

Good to see Gregson is running but is McCarthy able to run at all now?

Not sure I am keen on the extra 5 kg's. Would think it would place more pressure on Navicular bone.

That thought crossed my mind too.

It it were 5 kegs if fat it would. 5 kegs of muscle will only further support his joints and bones.

Fun fact: When your muscles grow, your bones also grow in width...

"Meanwhile, injured pair Cory Gregson and Lincoln McCarthy are progressing well as they look to overcome season-ending injuries.

The pair has remained at the club for a majority of their allotted eight-week break in order to rehab under the watchful eyes of club fitness staff.

McCarthy, whose season ended after three games, underwent hip and groin surgery, while Gregson has not played in more than a year after multiple foot surgeries.

Both are back running, with Gregson said to be slightly more advanced in his rehab than McCarthy who will be cautious in the lead up to Christmas".

Training return: The first-to-fourth year year players are due back on November 20, with the rest of the list to resume on Monday, December 4. They have no training camps planned at this stage, with the brunt of their program to be held in the Geelong region.

Injury list: Cory Gregson (foot) and Lincoln McCarthy (groin/hip) were running in October with an eye to starting pre-season on time with the main group. Gregson hasn't played since the middle of 2016 while McCarthy didn't return after round three this season. Quinton Narkle is also back running after a June knee reconstruction and is aiming for a summer program that focuses on an April return.

Draft picks: 22, 24, 35, 58, 72, 90, 108

Arrived: Gary Ablett

Departed: Josh Cowan (delisted), Matthew Hayball (delisted), Darcy Lang (traded to Carlton), Tom Lonergan (retired), Andrew Mackie (retired), Steven Motlop (free agency to Port Adelaide), Tom Ruggles (delisted)

Major off-field moves: A bit has gone on at the Cattery recently. Football manager Steve Hocking went to AFL HQ, which prompted a football department restructure and the internal appointment of Simon Lloyd to the role of director of football. Michael Poulton, former AFL competition and stakeholder manager, has been appointed as elite performance and development manager to work alongside Lloyd, and they're currently without a permanent chief commercial officer after Justin Reeves left to take up the role of Hawthorn CEO. There's stability at the very top though, with CEO Brian Cook signing on to continue in his role until the end of 2020.

Round one: Melbourne, MCG, Sunday, March 25, 3.20pm

Premiership odds: $9 (CrownBet)

We say: They won't be able to use the draw as a cause of poor form; it's very friendly, with nine games at their home fortress and six straight games in Victoria to end the season. Their hot midfield combination of Gary Ablett, Joel Selwood and Patrick Dangerfield will bond during the International Rules series in November, and they'll start pre-season training with nearly everyone on the park. There's been just the one on-field arrival so far, but it's a doozy – the return of Ablett and just how he'll fit in has everyone talking in Geelong, and many bullish about their prospects despite the loss of 489 games of backline experience with the retirements of Tom Lonergan and Andrew Mackie. – Jennifer Phelan.

Narkle back in April sounds a bit early to me,if he had the traditional ACL surgery I'd like to see the full 12 months recovery time used.

To be fair they might mean April as in back in full training in April not actually playing in April.

They may also mean back playing footy,Menzel was only 10 months the first time when he did the other knee in the VFL on return,so it appears the clubs happy with that time frame.

What do you think happens? They say “Geez it’s risky but ah, **** it, throw him in.”

No don't be bloody silly,All I'm saying is I'm a fan of the full 12 months.Is that a f--king crime?
I'd much rather see the full traditional amount of time taken as well. It is something that it is crucial to get right, take the extra time make sure things are as close to foolproof as they can possibly be. Quinton is a young player time is on his side, give him all the time it needs don't set return times just let him come back when everything is 100%

It's a crime against common sense to think that there's an arbitrary and magical 12 month threshold beyond which risks of re-injury diminish to zero.

Nothing much new here on McCarthy and Gregson. Although there are some stats.

"With the departures of Steven Motlop and Darcy Lang, the Cats are hoping McCarthy, Gregson and injury prone powerhouse Nakia Cockatoo can step up given a lack of forward pressure was a major issue for much of 2017.

Gregson, who has not played since Round 14 last year, has undergone three separate foot surgeries, including two this year, after originally suffering a navicular stress fracture in 2016.

McCarthy played the opening three games of 2017 but underwent groin surgery in May. After failing to respond, the 24-year-old was again forced to go under the knife in August.

The livewire forward kicked three goals in the Cats’ Round 1 win over Fremantle after kicking 19 goals from 16 appearances in 2016. Gregson, drafted with the 47th overall selection in 2014, played 20 games and kicked 13 goals in his first season.

Geelong’s capacity to deliver a flag in the wake of Gary Ablett’s recruitment could well hinge on the ability of McCarthy, Gregson and Cockatoo to impact across the course of the season.

Between them the trio played 14 of a possible 75 games in 2017."
