Have to politely disagree.

Jones plays a very different role to those three, and it's one that I think we need down back.

Jones on the opposition key forward, Marchbank on the second tall, and Weiters responsible for the third tall as well as supporting the other two. Plowman could actually be used in Docherty's role without too much trouble I think, playing as the extra man in defense.

Still leaves room for a couple of small/medium defenders who can drive off half back. Pick two of Simmo, Byrne, Williamson and Mullett based on form and balance. The others are either playing on the wing, off the bench or working their arses off in the VFL.
The “politely” is presumed here mate, no issue with disagreeing with my opinion.

I’m not sure how many teams are lining up with 3 talls at the moment, but I just can’t see how Weitering is a 3rd tall type backman and how Plowman takes Docherty’s role?

Weitering should be marking the oppositions best forward. It’s where he’s played his best footy and where he seems the most comfortable, especially when intercepting. Marchbank just needs a little bit more size and can take the second tall as his read of the game is very good. Lastly, Plowman is a cookie cutter third tall defender - that good medium size. I don’t recall him rebounding from defence and playmaking like Doc has.

Most importantly, if your team defence and understanding is top notch, a few cm’s here and there won’t make that much of a difference. You might concede 1 or 2 goals due to a one-on-one marking contest every now and then, but the intercept marking and rebounding will be much more damaging going the other way.

The list is in a precarious position given its lack of experience. I value the expected contributions of the 25 plus brigade for 2018. While hopeful that McKay, Cuningham and Macreadie will have significant development years none of them are first choice options. Thomas, Wright, Lamb and Casboult will be there from start to finish next year.

All good - these discussions can snowball pretty quick, so just making sure we're all on good terms.

Jones, to me, is a reactive defender. He sticks close to his man most of the time, but if he sees the opportunity to come off and impact another contest, or run through and contest a ground ball himself, he will. His athleticism and burst speed makes him well suited to this role.

Weiters and Marchbank more proactive defenders. They're less physical, for mine, and beat their opponents through spacing, positioning and team defense. Weitering in particular is just as much an offensive player from the back line as he is a defender. Would rather he was able to play a little looser on a third tall type so that he can zone off more freely and be used on the rebound at times.

Plowman's bigger than Doc, but I think he plays a little smaller than his height suggests. We haven't seem him rebounding and playmaking as much because Docherty was our go-to. But there have been times I've seen Plowman cut through traffic and clear the ball, and he was used up the ground a bit while at GWS too. Given the opportunity, I think he'd perform the role well.

We're going to have a tough time getting the balance right while also playing everyone who deserves games, that's for sure.

Jones to man up the deepest forward and come at the contest from behind. Marchbank and Weiters guarding the second and third talls whilst also protecting space further out from goal. Plowman playing the extra man behind the play, intercepting loose kicks and setting up our rebounds.

Ah, this seems a bit like seeing what you want to see

Completely agree with this. If we push more players up onto the ball and get more pressure on opposition kicks, like we did in Weiters 1st year, he'd kill it as a loose defender.

Does anybody have any info on the software program that we are supposedly using for talent identification and drafting.

I read it was based on a US program and was wondering, what clubs use it and which clubs are putting most money in to these programs?

Is anyone in the know?

There is a cool doco with English football coach Sam Allardyce on a similiar program that’s worth a look.

I hope not. If so the kids haven't come through as hoped or been given the game time.

Most weeks we will have Murphy Curnow Cripps Kruezer Jones Plowman Wright Simpson maybe ASOS or Rowe or Kerridge then add the names like Weitering Marchbank Silvagni Kennedy Lang who are starting to go past that 30 game mark and establish themselves.

That's enough experience IMO as we still need the play the kids like we did this year

these stats taken from foxsports site..

Nick Holman (Central Districts)

Age: 22

Position: Midfielder

2017 SANFL average numbers: Kicked 19 goals and averaged 26 disposals, 15 contested possessions, 7 score involvements, 7 inside 50s, 6 tackles and 127 Champion Data ranking points from 20 games.

THE nine-game player at Carlton has spent the past two seasons at Central Districts and thrived. With an impressive workrate, as well as strong tackling ability and intensity, Holman was named in the best 15 times this year and was ranked third in the competition for average disposals. Still has age on his side too, which might appeal to an AFL club.

Would there be any chance on getting Holman back, did really like this kid when he was on our list.
I mentioned Holman a month or two back and got little support. I still think he was stiff to get cut 2 years ago and would like to see him at least rookie listed at Carlton.

Gyran Miers was ranked in the top 20 on the above link kicking 7 in the grand final and 50 for the season.

Is he a reach at pick 30? That’s some serious good numbers for a small forward.

No one player can possibly replace Doc. It will be a team effort.
Totally agree.Bolts has plenty of time to work out how we rejig the backline but the likes of Byrne, mullet, willo,Simo, plow, march, weits will roll through there as a collective.Wouldnt be surprised if Thomas takes some of that role on reads the game well can intercept as well however pace will be his problem.

A player goes down and we hear the usual "It will give another player an opportunity to step up, and that's a good thing"

We crowd ourselves in one area of the ground and of course we don't hear something like, "Yeah, we do have too many KPD's and that will naturally stifle Macreadies opportunities and development" :)
