I think you are on the money Sector 7G.I think there is a balance. Clearly the Port game we introduced too many players at once and gained little from the experience.
The key benchmark to meet this year will be young players meeting/exceeding expectations. Relatively easy for first year players where all the player that got regular game time did this. I would argue that only really CC did that out of our second year players last year and the real test will be their improvement this year and how the 2017 first year players come on.
Start with the ‘older players’ who were in our best 22 at the end of 2017:
Kreuzer, Murphy, Ed, Simpson, Casboult, Wright, Thomas and Jones (8) and assume no injuries ...
Which leaves 14 spots in the 22 of which Cripps takes 1 and Docherty would, apart from injury, take another.
With Docherty out, there are 13 spots and then extra spots for whoever of the ‘older players’ gets pushed out ...
and Thomas might be pushed out early, perhaps Wright as the year goes on, perhaps Casboult if McKay comes on ...
So I don’t think we’ll see a repeat with our latest batch of draftees as last year where Pickett, Marchbank, SPS and Macreadie played round 1, Willa round 3, Fisher round 4 and Polson the Port game ...
So I think we’ll see Lang and Kennedy in the 22, and Marchbank and Pickett, all of our 2015 draftees (Weiters, McKay, Charlie, Cuningham and Jack), 3 of our 2016 draftees (SPS, Fisher and Willa) with Macreadie very close ... and for all of these players there will be benchmarks and things to work on to show improvement ...
And Dow, O’Brien and Garlett will earn their spots ...
