I think it's time we revisit this discussion:
Liam Jones vs. Caleb Daniel.
We wouldn't have taken Daniel.
More likely would have grabbed Clem Smith at that #46.
That would be ridiculous.
We already have talls in picks #1, #3 and #6 down back.
Premium picks are for mids and forwards, from here on in.
In order of importance (IMO):
- goal kicking mid with elite pace and two way running (e.g. Kelly, Shiel types)
- Inside mid with decent tank (e.g. Hopper)
- Gibbs replacement (if he goes- silky mixed inside/outside goal kicking mid ?LDU)
- Elite key forward with good tank and good set shot (?Ben Silvagni but clearly this is a long time to wait)
- Fast small forward/half forward
- Developing ruck
My set positions for 2018 currently:
FB: Plowman- Jones- Weitering
HB: Docherty- Marchbank- Byrne
C Cuningham - Cripps- Williamson
HF: Fisher- Curnow- Silvagni
FF: SPS - XXXX (Casboult if he stays) - Wright
Foll: MK- Murphy - Gibbs (or replacement)
Int: Curnow of the E variety, Extra inside mid, quick mid, Simpson
Developing and chance to break through: Pickett, McKay, Polson, Macreadie
If Cas goes, I wonder if we give both Kerr and Mckay their chance. Cant see us picking up anyone to fill that void this year. Kinda hope he stays to ease development on these other two.

I think a power forward-mid is right up there in terms of need. A Robbie Gray/Petracca type.
Without seeing him play, Rayner sounds exactly like the type of player I think we need (without me saying that he's the best available, or that he won't be gone before our pick etc.)
It wouldnt go astray. So long as they can play up to 50% time in mid and be a 50 goal forward, I am all in! Rayner is certainly looking the goods
Rayner is a long way off playing through the midfield at AFL, but he is a beast for his size
I think next year we will look like this based on current list

Needs are Quality Mids with good ball use, back up Ruck and a Tall Mobile Forward.

Reckon he's in for Polson in that line-up. Cam to be a slow burn in the VFL with a view to replacing Murphy in a few years.
I'd also expect to see Kerr ahead of Macreadie in a forward role, given we haven't put any development into Macreadie up forward this year.

Should have put Phillips into the 'After that'.
If McKay LeBois Kerr Sumner Pickett can step up and be really good AFL players it will make a massive difference to our list

True, but we need to monitor his progress. At this stage his beep test is around 12, if come the draft camp those numbers are increasing, it comes his improvement better scope.
As an example, Fasolo, was always considered a very good HF, but there were hopes he could play up the ground, it never eventuated
Gibbs staying put with Kelly and Hopper added.
Got a fair idea how you intend to pay for the 2 giants too
