GWS have the 1000 draft point penalty as well this season, so one strategy if we finish last would be to try and have Kruezer leave as FA - get GWS to pay him enough to trigger band one compensation - pick 2 (we'll take on some of their contracts they need to get rid of - see below).

Then we send pick 1 to GWS in a trade for a few players we like/or a deal involving their first who knows. Pick one then slides down to pick 4-5 leaving us with pick 1 after our pick 2 gets upgraded and GWS go down the order.

Smith is a favorite of mine .
A "footballer" with class and a really competitive attitude .
I guess the discussion lies in how we are placed with his type of player .
Pickett , Polson , Sumner , LeBois all small forward / midfielder types .
Where do Bolton/Silvagni see these blokes going forward ?
Smith is a beauty and there's always a strong argument for attaining class players when you can .
But the midfield appears the area where we need to concentrate our resources at seasons end .

Yeah, i'm personally not sold on Smith as a very good player. He's ok, but...yeah. And we don't really "need" him as you say.

Hopper i would trade for. Free agents?...yeah, if we can.

Otherwise, to the draft we go again.

I heard if he triggers it will be on big money under the terms of the contract. If so we cannot allow it to trigger.

CARLTON has already had discussions with Dale Thomas’ management about the midfielder’s delicate trigger clause, with the Thomas camp determined not to allow the issue to drag on throughout the season.

While Thomas has a trigger — believed to be 15 games — that would guarantee him a substantial contract, about half of this year’s $700,000-plus, his management has spoken to the Blues about a possible deal that can avert a weekly discussion about his place in the side.

If it's $350k next year, then that's not too bad.
We'll already have a heap of room in our cap next year.
I don't think he should play on, but the club won't sacrafice the kids just to get Thomas out of the club.

Pretty much , although you have a high bar if Smith is only "ok"
Select trading that hit all our requirements
Elite FA
Always the draft

Clubs in the top 4 of the ladder - trade their early picks for readymade immediate players

Clubs in the bottom 4 of the ladder - never trade their early picks and go to the draft to pick up young talent

Thomas is the right kind of extrovert that would be useful to have around the club.

See this is where Daisy should be ... groom his as an interlocking Defender/Midfield specialist coach. He knows footy. I have seen it with my own eyes ......

Could be very handy to keep a youngish guy in, along with Walks, to bond with the youngsters. Don't let that generational gap broaden to ... for arguments sake a MM grandfather type thing ....

Pretty reasonable idea, and could offset the discussions somewhat. It'll take some sincere conversations with him, and we don't know what his intentions are, but he has a good footy brain and has been a part of a successful team. From all reports, he's one of the most vocal in teams meetings and a good mentor for the group.

Obviously he'd prefer to grab another 700k, but with where we're at that's pretty idealistic. I could see him being successful in a developmental role.

$300k is fine to keep Daisy on, surely no one here can complain about that??

Thomas has done very very well financially out of the CFC for next to no return as a player .
Next year , as a player , he's not worth a postage stamp and certainly wouldn't get a senior game .
To that end , the club this year just makes sure no trigger clause is met ... end of story .
If the club see him of value in any off field capacity they can follow up that avenue accordingly as a separate matter .
Thomas as i understand it has no real say , the club will have honored it's contractual obligations and therefore be in complete control .

Its only April and way too early to make a call on either. A lot can change in 6 months. Brodie was touted as a number 1 pick this time last year and fell to 8 or so. There might be someone better come seasons end.

SPS was touted as potential #1 and we got him at #5.

Macreadie was touted as potential top 5 and we got him at #47!

It's all just a crapshoot at this stage of the year...

As you say , price both in $ and trade would definitely be a factor in any pursuit of Smith as against going to the draft as the Crows did for Cameron and Milera .
As much as i like Smith , if trading is on the cards I'd be targeting the likes of Kennedy and Hopper as genuine mids and both smack bang in our desired age demographic .
Both also bigger bodied to assist Cripps than Smith who is smaller in the mould of SPS , Fisher and Polson .
I'd also be strongly investigating the elite FA this year and going forward .
It's a free hit at elite talent and we have heaps of cap space available that we are committed to spend .

The problem I see with wanting this elite FA at the end of the season is that the two elite free agents available I expect will both re-sign with their current clubs.

No problem .
Revisit next year .
No doubt Silvagni will know the situation re FA's this year and going forward through ongoing dialogue with player managers .
He'll be working to a list management plan , no doubt the pieces of the puzzle can/will change along the way but the blueprint will remain .

Clem Smith was touted as a top10 pick, so was the Scharenburg last year.

Guys who played well in there junior year will start highly rated until the guys that didn't play the year before have a chance to show what they have got.

was a balic fan before the draft and he went late. concerns on his ball use and a chronic wrist injury? can find it though

Me too. Wonder if Fremantle will want to give him up? Wonder what they would want for him. Was a late second round pick originally. Only just played his first game since the 2015 draft.
