You are right, they were mutually beneficial but why would we have exclusive rights to these deals ??

My point is that to date, SOS's strong relationship has prevented most of the other clubs from getting in on the action and outbidding us. He's no magician or hypnotist so I'm questioning how much longer he can give us that inside running with GWS before they throw it wide open to the other clubs.

Don't forget their were plenty of other GWS players we were supposed to get, Adam Tomlinson was meant to have been done and dusted in the 2015 Trade Period, and in the 2016 Trade Period, Jack Steele, Paul Ahern, James Stewart, Hoskin-Elliott and Aiden Corr were all dead certainties to be coming our way.

I'll give you Tomlinson but I don't remember anyone bar Marchbank being a lock and Pickett was second.

Tomlinson will probably cost a lot more now but I note both he and Shiel come out of contract at the same time.

Hmmmz

If you recall the talk was for another "4 player" deal from GWS, and all the players I mentioned were rolled through as part of "the 4", granted probably Steele and Stewart were probably more mentioned than the others, but they were all touted.

;)

Ahern and WHE were never really talked of as being ours.

Steele was early on in the piece but that ship sailed quite early.
Happy in the end we didn't get Stewart.

Corr also was never a 'dead certainty', was just a name raised as possible.

The only 'lock' i recall was Tomlinson.

Really happy how it all worked out getting Marchbank & Pickett though, plus the kids we ended up drafting. Blessing in disguise.

Touted is a long way from what you originally stated.

Tomlinson and Marchbank were talked about big time and the negotiations went very similar ways until right at the end.

None of the other trades mentioned got anywhere near the noise of these two.

I didn't tout - I just used the word.

The touting was done by plenty on this board and others.

From memory it was a Bulldogs supporter, with good form with this kind of thing, who came on our board and touted we would be trading our first pick for Marchbank, Steele etc. Later on in the year a few Carlton itk's shot down the Steele talk and suggested Pickett and it soon became apparent that holding our first pick and getting Marchbank was the priority.

From what barrass mentioned, it sounds like Hopper may very well be our Marchbank this year. A long way to go though, look at the money Nth are throwing around, it's a competitive market. Hopper just makes complete sense as a major target for us, exactly the type of player we should be after, hopefully we can get him.

Would love to see both Kennedy and Hopper in the Navy next year. Better value working out yet another combination deal with GWS than going all in on a Fyfe type in my opinion.

Hopper and Kennedy would be terrific and I'd be happy to trade for them .
Fyfe for FREE would be a no brainer .
Reckon our 2018 1st rounder would come into play as the base piece for Hopper and Kennedy .
Our huge salary cap space lures Fyfe as a FA only , no trading for him .
Fyfe and his manager would be made well aware of the opportunities that await at Carlton and in Melbourne generally for a marquee player along with the knowledge of the serious young squad that the club is putting together .
Take our high pick this year along with a possible Gibbs traded pick to the draft for best available mids and that is 5 quality mids to add to Murphy , Cripps , SPS etc going forward with B.Silvagni added the following year to round out our KPF stocks .

Should Gibbs go I'd use his cap space and target Zaharakis and use the pick we receive, for Hopper. Would also look to upgrade our 3rd rnd pick with the Crows' 2nd.

Could lose Bryce but go into 2018 with Zaka, Hopper and Worpel.

I'll let you do your own best 22, too early in the year but the Gibbs situation forces you to ponder it.

Not to mention the Tomlinson media interview was ready and set up to go.... that must of been rather awkward 5 minutes after the trade got canned

If we did land them then it would almost be a no brainer to draft Obrien from the pio's complete midfielder beautiful skills to complement our inside grunt.

Fyfe Cripps Hopper. Gee whiz......

Liking your work RB.

Makes sense - will be another interesting year of "SOS Watch".

No doubt he has a plan in place!

In a dream scenario:

- Fyfe as a free agent (no trading picks).

- Gibbs pick (if he leaves) used to trade for Schache (who we've been linked to along with the Tigers).

- 2018 first used to trade for Hopper and Kennedy from GWS

- Retain first pick at end of year (somewhere between pick 1-5)

Would be a dream scenario but obviously highly unlikely. All the players coming in fit the age bracket without sacrificing our need to continue to bring in quality youth (as they are all quality under the age of 21 except Fyfe). Schache teams up with McKay as our two main towers up forward releasing Weiters back into defence (which pushes Rowe out of the team). Fyfe, Hopper, and Kennedy add a HUGE amount to our midfield and are walk up starters to partner with Cripps, SPS, and Murphy. Plus we still bring in an elite talent from the draft (pick ~1-5 depending on ladder position).

Our youthful team then looks like:

Plowman, Marchbank, Byrne
Docherty, Weitering, Williamson

Kreuzer, Cripps, Hopper
Kennedy, Fyfe, Murphy

C. Curnow, Schache, SPS
Pickett, McKay, Wright

INT from: Macreadie, SOSOS, Polson, Fisher, Sumner, Phillips, Jaksch, Kerr, Cuningham, LeBois, First Draft pick

Edit: I just re-looked at that team after I typed it and my damn heart nearly exploded. What a team jam packed with young talent. Please SOS pull off this masterpiece.
