They were the old days and even then, without kicking goals you're heading into Ross Lyon territory.

Defence is still very important but you can see now that inside 50 kick is now of incredible importance. I'm not sure how everyone else feels but when SPS has the ball just outside the 50 arc, I go great, something good will happen. When quite a few of our other players like White etc. have that kick, i just groan and go wrong person has the ball. The inside 50 kick is becoming critical and explains a little about the importance of Sam Mitchell at the hawks and now WCE. If he is involved in a chain of passes going fwd, it invariably leads to a good result inside 50.

We can go on adding to the back-line forever and a day and clocking up incremental improvements as we go..........backline isn't our problem.

Back-line is a 9/10 going forward.
Forward-line is? Possibly a 7/10
Our midfield is at best a 5/10 for depth.

Get the midfield right and the back-line rests easier and the forward line looks forward to better delivery.

Kreuzer has been a revelation this season, he's always had it in him but it's all come together for him.

I'd only consider trading him if we had already bedded in another young ruckman who had the potential of replacing him, not sure we have that right now.

Philips is so and so, Korcheck probably won't make it.

Another option is picking up a ruckman who hasn't been given an opportunity from another club.
I doubt that there would be another ruckman in the league at this point who is capable of replacing Kreuzer. Basically, as soon as the ball hits the deck, most ruckman become spectators... except for Kreuzer. He starts hunting the ball and essentially, as some of the experts say, becomes another midfielder... albeit a 200cm tall midfielder.

He's been great for us, I just don't see him getting more than band 2. Do you chuck him away for that? I don't think so.

That's about right, yes, and is reflected in the compensation we've seen in the last 2 off-seasons.

I'd estimate the band 1 threshold this off-season to be upwards of 800k/3yrs given the new CBA.
And there is the rub, I just don't see Kreuzer getting that sort of money anywhere. I can see the figures of 400-550k/year being tossed around, but you would want to think that we would consider matching that sort of money... considering that it would only get us, I think, about band 3 compo.

I actually reckon he'll get $600-700k; it's important to remember the cap may jump 20% next year.

Think that you are close to the mark or maybe slightly under. Unique ruckman. I think that the length of the contract might be the most important part. I guess that he would be looking for 3 years min for us as he would probably get 4 elsewhere. Remember he is a Unrestricted FA and we don't get the option of matching.

I think we need three years in the draft. So for mine, Schache comes out of contract one year too early. I don't want it to be like Judd, where we sold the farm and we hadn't even built the stable.

And the problem is, whichever way you look at it, we don't yet have trade bait. Maybe Gibbs gets us a first round pick (I'm sceptical... I think it's more likely a second rounder), maybe Kreuzer and Levi get us a second rounder. But unless we start going into untouchable territory (Docherty and Cripps), I just don't see how we swing a deal that nets us first round picks for dealing for Schache.

That said, I'm glad to hear that SOS is investigating.

Have been told that Marcus Stavrou from the Northen Blues will be "hidden" in the development league from now on after impressing in the seniors. Look out for him in November.
Sam Fowler in our Development league team was rested this week. Absolutely starred the week before.

Terrible all year. Maybe he has checked out already, but if the Pies have trained their sights on him.......reckon that's where he'll end up. Richmond maybe.
Yes, probably right. The Magpies will likely give up too much and pay overs for him. Meanwhile SOS will somehow land a super talented youngster for a song.

Reckon both Richmond and Collingwood will have Sam Reid as their preference.

Also not sure how a 20 y.o OOC Schache costs 2 first rounders. Josh Kelly maybe, but not Josh Schache.

Read somewhere that Schache and his parents were down in our rooms after one of our games, not sure what that means, but I have also heard his olds are big Carlton supporters.
I must say he doesn't look too happy and I'd be shocked if he is still there next year, McCluggage is another one who I can't see hanging around up there to long, Brisbane just can not understand that selecting the best player available isn't worth doing, if that players not going to stay for 10yr+, McCluggage looked like someone who's dog had just died, when they called his name out on draft night.

I know it's a free for all competition we find oursleves in, but right now I'd feel dirty should we somehow manage to get Schache and for what may be, for unders.......or any team for that matter.

Swann has to dig his heals in and not allow other clubs to walk over Brisbane and if that means us (pies or tigers) not getting what we want, then so be it.

Brisbane may let Schache go in the end, but they'd want someone that wants him so much, to pay the premium....as they should.

Pretty sure that his father was an early Brisbane Bear who died a bit ago (apologies if incorrect). He was continually quoted saying that he was happy to play at Brisbane to continue his fathers legacy. Clearly something has changed. On an AFL basis I would prefer him to stay at Brisbane. Fair punt if we were to take him on. No guarantee that he ends up a better player than Big Harry and even if they both end up good not sure that they complement each other as they are pretty similar.

As I recall Robert Walls was the Brisbane coach at the time and wanted to toughen Laurence Schache up, by putting him through the "Ring of Fire" which involved boxing his way out of a ring of a dozen or so players.

Loving that we shall have first dibs on Ethan Penrith. Seen a fair bit of this kid and looks promising enough. Should be able to nab him with our third round pic.

That was Shane Strempel, not Schache snr.

Yeah wrong bloke but great story though. Remember years later Walls was kind of accused of brutality. His answer was pretty much along the lines "he was a smartarse and deserved it". Different times indeed.
