I am not saying it isn't worthy of discussion just that if I was GWS I would not trade a key player that I got via the academy. If you agree to that you are just admitting it is an ongoing open slather on your whole list. The point of the academy is player retention. If I was them I would try to get him to sign and if he refuses make it clear can head to Brisbane(likely bottom) via preseason draft. They have to make a stand on academy players and it is not like they really need draft picks they would get in a trade.

Fair enough but just how do GWS "make a stand" if Hopper is out of contract and wants to go live in Melbourne?

Say Lions and Blues finish bottom 2.

GWS are snookered!

I would prefer we chase Fyfe ahead of Shiel. One year difference in age, Shiel is going to demand very similar coin and then we will get bent over at the trade table. Mind you it would be awesome to have Shiel play for us, he is a Beauty.

Maybe SOS is distributing disinformation? Maybe injury concerns about Fyfe? We won't be having a first round pick until 2019.

Where has all this talk of Hopper come from? I would imagine there is no way GWS would allow themselves to lose a top related academy player. If they allow an academy player to walk after two years they may as well give up on the future of the club. They would not let that happen without an almighty fight and I imagine would not do a trade under any circumstances.

Just a few whispers he may want to come to Victoria at this stage. GWS wouldn't be too keen to relinquish him, but they've got an abundance of gun inside mids coming through in Kennedy, Setterfield and Taranto. Losing Hopper wont be too big a deal.

Sure, the academy system is designed so they've got exclusive access, but if players want to bail, (like Jack Steele) and they're fairly compensated, GWS are happy to deal. We've so far had a very congenial trading relationship with them, which both sides benefitting enormously. Plus, they've been willing to give up guys like Mutch and Macreadie, so they're not overly sentimental about player movement. If they sense opportunities to improve their list, while subsequently freeing cap space and balancing out their needs, they've shown they're very pragmatic.

I really rate Hopper and if Shiel is unavailable then he should be our next target. I'm glad (although not convinced) we've gone off Fyfe a bit. He's hunting the biggest contract of his career and with his injury concerns, and limited gametime over the past 12 months he may not be worth what others are willing to pay. I also think with Cripps and potentially CCurnow in the middle, we've got our tall inside mids sorted. I reckon he'll end up at Melbourne.

development - we had our own development thread around here at one time...........

Actually, as much as I have advocated for us not 'doing a Melbourne', their midfield probably has more to do with bottoming out than it does with development.

Their midfield is not yet elite, but they would have close to the best young midfield brigade going round (GWS included).

Petracca - pick #2 (might have been #1, if St Kilda didn't need a KPF so badly)
Brayshaw - pick #3
Oliver - pick #4
Viney - pick #7 (where Port bid on him, might have gone top 5 in an open draft)
Tom Dyson* - pick #3 (if you undo their trade for him and give up him and Salem (meh), they could have Josh Kelly in this 5th spot).

Fast forward 3-4 years and I am scared of that midfield.

* admit it, this sounds more normal than his actual name....

Gibbs and Cripps trashed them last time we met :p:p

Fyfe is a champion, but I don't think he is worth what you'd have to give to get him and I really think we need to aim for a champion team rather than a team of champions. Fyfe I get the feeling demands things be done his way and I actually think that could be unsettling for us. Like Judd said you have to be wary of energy vacuums, and I feel (completely opinion and based on no fact) that after Pavlich stepped away as captain and along with it his central sole role as leader, that perhaps Fyfe stepped in to take some of that power despite Mundy being captain and that really rocked that stability of the playing group. I don't know how good he is at inspiring or getting the best out of people Fyfe despite his undeniable talent.

I would be chasing a ruckman.

A dominant ruckmam
Unfortunate typo at the end of your post THS.

Our ruck division is terrible.

Kreuzer and Phillips are serviceable.

Gorringe is a stop-gap measure if Kreuzer and Phillips are both injured.

Korcheck would surpass all expectations to actually be in the conversation.

We should not be talking about Casboult and Rowe as second ruck options, and H McKay has a long way to go before he adds ruck to his forward-line duties.
