I don't subscribe to recreational outrage myself... but you'd have to be completely tone deaf to not acknowledge that it was a tasteless joke but then again if something doesn't happen to you then it doesn't exist obviously is done people's attitude. Really outfielder

I appreciate your thoughtful response Wildcard, but save your lecture on anti-intellectualism for a day when you're not siding with those who've launched into abuse at the mere hint of a discussion about privilege and unconscious prejudice.
Fair point, but I haven't "sided" with anyone. My thoughts are as much my own as I can possibly make them.

We just need to be careful not to buy in either way unless there is a valid argument, that's all.
Everyone has an agenda, and hatred runs both ways.

Our society is supposed to function on the premise of innocent until proven guilty, not the other way around.

On the subject of that ... journalist... you only need ask yourself this:
At what point, exactly, did you begin to think of what Pav said as racist? At the time? Or afterwards?
Do you remember?

So if Michael Walters wasn't aboriginal the comment would have been ok? I think the comment was based more around Midland being a crime hot spot, which it is, more so than the colour of Walters' skin.

I didn't even think once that he was referring to his skin colour and I have no idea how anyone made that connection.

I'm not sure why people get their knickers in a knot whenever the term 'racism' appears. We all have subconscious bias. Making a comment that ever so slightly enforces a racial stereotype doesn't make Pav a bad person in the slightest, nor does it make him a racist person. But, I'll bet you everything in my wallet (about 35 bucks and some old receipts) that Pav will choose his words more carefully next time. Because that will make him a more awesome commentator, and that's how Pav rolls.

If you don't understand what the fuss is about, it's really very simple. There is a stereotype (whether you personally subscribe to it or not) that Indigenous people are often criminals. This effects they way indigenous people are treated on an everyday basis: at Myer; in a nightclub; in a job interview; whatevs. The effect is small, but it is real. (Go here for evidence https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/australia/takeatest.html) If you don't think you have any racial bias, you're probably wrong.

So, when you make a joke about an indigenous bloke being from a high crime area, it has a very minor potential to reinforce this stereotype. It's not about SonSon being offended, it's about whether we choose to contribute in a miniscule way to a world where stereotypes make some peoples lives more difficult than others. I'll bet Pav will take the opportunity to learn from it and I can choose to as well.

It's extremely minor and is only in the news because Brendan foster is a knob.

PS. Haters gonna hate, potaters gonna potate and Brenden Foster will continue to write bullshit, please let's not any more of his tripe in here. :)

I obviously need to clarify. Going by his one comment, I accept Pav was making a joke about Midlands (class), rather than race. I said as much right at the start.
But, am I angry that anybody would even raise the issue? No, because I'm more bothered by casual racism than the "outrage industry" and airing these issues helps.
I respect that the Indigenous elder quoted by Foster has put up with a lot of negative stereotyping and doesn't necessarily see it the same way you or I do. I wouldn't dismiss his view as an agenda.
I reckon Pav's big enough and thoughtful enough to see how his joke might bother some. And who knows, when examining his conscience Pav might decide he did see colour. It wouldn't make him different from the rest of us.

I look at it this way, comment was about Midland, full bloody stop.

How would we react if Ballantyne was playing and in the similar play he said, "Balla's steals it ............. he's used to it, being from Mandurah " ?. I'd have a good laugh, as it was not a joke about white pygmies, but crime.

Anyway Pav is a Croweater, proof that Tasmanians can swim !!!!!!.

I don't think anyone believes it was an intentionally racist jibe. But impact and intent are not the same thing.

I could make a joke about you having a tiny penis, but if you've just had it removed due to testicular cancer, you might not think it's funny.

Fair enough.

Maybe my primary school had a pretty tough playground, we quickly learnt how to stand up for ourselves and take the ups and downs of dealing with other kids. We tackled each issue ( usually a good push & shove ), sorted out our differences and then were best mates next day.

Ah, maybe I'm just a grumpy old bugger who thinks that alot of people have forgotten how to laugh at themselves.

I actually found it quite funny, but also acknowledge the possibility of causing offence. I reckon you can do both at once.

Like I said, it was an extremely minor comment and is not newsworthy. The world needs more Pavs and less Brendan Fosters.

Hey Crew, I caught the end of a video from the AFL 360 show the other day before the game where Fyfey and CMac had puppets of Gerard and Robbo and were cracking jokes, but I couldn't hear it at the pub. Any chance someone could post it up for us?? I gotta see what cracked Fyfey up.

Damn, would love to see that! I want to see what an absolute weirdo CMac is. Have only ever seen him/heard him speak in media conferences and you can already see a bit of weirdness in him from those.

No idea where to find it, but it is a bit of a laugh. Fyfe essentially does a good call/bad call question as to whether McCarthy's mo should only be reserved for pool cleaners and pizza delivery boys, and McCarthy looks a little stunned and says bad call and that he thinks it's a great look. There's an extra layer of irony, in my opinion, since Fyfe has such garbage hair himself.

Fyfe is truly taking on the job of team elder now. Main task: taking the piss out of the style of the younger players.

Forgive the intrusion... can't understand the hoo-hah over Pav's Midland comment. The world has lost it's sense of humour... but maybe that's because I've had a long exposure to things like 'the collingwood supporter lost his car keys, don't worry he'll just pinch another ride'... 'how does a collingwood supporter start his car.. with a screwdriver'..

Except that they do, the footy show used to always hang shit on Swan for being from Frankston. Every city has that one suburb that is a bit dodgy, and people make fun of. In this country, almost every one of those suburbs are mostly white, Midland included. The joke was about Midland not race.

except Swan is from Broadmeadows (as is Ed)... which is even more the butt of jokes...As for Frankston, the line is 'the only good thing to come out of Frankston is Dermott Brereton..'
