I’m actually hoping that Ed Richards does this. “I want to play for the same club my Grandpa and Great uncle Lou played for. If you draft me I’ll request a trade in two years.”

Pick 55 - Ed Richards

If it was GWS in our position, the AFL would've changed the father son to grandfather son etc by now.

Well it's on then
Technically it shouldn’t happen, but I can definitely see clubs getting spooked by Richards. He has black and white flowing through his veins. He even had his parents write a letter to the Chargers this year requesting they change his week off to a different week so he could play on Victoria Park iirc because it was a life long dream of his to play on that ground.

If he’s drafted by another club I have no doubt he’ll eventually end up at Collingwood (assuming we want him).

Dave,
There is no chance that Freo are taking two Victorian born players and they will take Dow over Rayner as the "go home" factor is reduced significantly (Dow a border for years at Geelong Grammar has already dealt with homesickness and Rayner has put the big "go home after 2 years" flag out there). Norf are pretty google eyed over the game breaking traits of Stephensen. There is a high likelihood that Cerra drops to 6. Do we take him ??

I reckon if he is there you just about have to take. Very hard to turn back best available when there is a KPP really screaming out.

Hopefully he goes to a club with a good development program so he’s cherry ripe when we grab him in 2 years.

I thought you couldn't say something like that, draft tampering
I don’t think there is a rule about the kids interviewing badly, making themselves looking like a flight risk etc. The interviews I think was the reason that why Aish and Laverde slid in their respective draft years. There were rumours going around then that Aish was a flight risk, and apparently Laverde interviewed badly which is why he slid to the Bombers at 20 after he was being touted as potentially being drafted by us at 5 (he also happened to be a Bombers supporter, so conspiracy theory says...).

However, I’m not sure when it would cross into draft tampering. Certainly if there was collusion with their preferred club i.e. if Collingwood were to guarantee Richards that we would select him with a later pick if he interviewed badly to get there. If he specified he wanted to play with someone specific and would request a trade at the end of the rookie contract if he was drafted elsewhere but there was no collusion I don’t know how the AFL would view that.

I'm keen on Coffield. 190cm, great skills and decision making, good intercept mark, great sidestep and quick too, not even "just for a tall guy" (2.91s 20m sprint, one of the fastest). Knocks are that he's not great 1v1 defensively (still good, just not a particular strength). Think he'll be available for us. If he can become a midfielder would be a huge bonus. We had so much of the footy last year but decision making and terrible kicking let us down. Think he fills a need. Crisp is a good player but will never be A grade. We desperately need pace and skill off the half-back. Murray and Coffield could be and explosive duo. Maynard to become a mid this year. Gun in the making.

Other thoughts, Brander's probably the best KPF in the draft. Start of the year was probably the most likely to go pick 1. Hard working, quick off the mark, good endurance, good agility for a big guy. Good at ground level too. Has shown he's a good mark, but weirdly drops some simple ones. Inconsistent. Hasn't improved over the year, which is a bad sign. Not super accurate kicking for goal, but good field kick. Will probably go round one but not a top ten pick.

Bonar's the biggest upside of anyone in the draft and highly rated by the stingrays. A really good mark and plays forward, but is an ACL risk as he's hard surgery twice on it already. Smashed it at the combine. Could be a sneaky for us. Might be too risky for pick 6 though, I wouldn't be dissapointed if we drafted him though.

Nothing wrong with saying your blood pumps black and white and that you'd love to play out your career at Collingwood when there is so much family history associated with the place. Just let them know that if you're drafted you'll happily wait a couple of seasons to make that a reality.

Going back to our pick 6, I think before we need a particular position or type of player, what we need from pick 6 is an elite player. We’ve been out of the first round for two years but prior to that we had 7 top 20 selections in three drafts (4 in the top 10). Of those 3 you would say have been a success (Moore, Grundy & De Goey), 1 is showing potential (Scharenberg), 1 the jury is still out (Broomhead) and 2 are gone from the club (Kennedy (who has also just been delisted by Melbourne) & Freeman).

We had a bit of bad luck with Scharenberg and Freeman with injuries, but I’ve probably been a bit generous with Broomhead. If Scharenberg turns into a success that’s a strike rate of just above 50%, and when you look at what came after our selections in the 2012 & 2013 drafts that’s not a great strike rate.

That’s why I think it is important to take the best available with pick 6, and then pick based on need after that.

I can see any of Howe, Maynard and Goldsack being moved from the defensive group before Crisp. More than likely even Schaz. Think Crisp showed this year that he could become a weapon in defence. One of our better 1v1 defenders, has pace and a willingness to take the game on.

I'm just concerned his hair may clash with everything, mind you if you are going to do it, do it better than all others.

Can someone please confirm - has Bonar had 2 knee recos on the same knee? Or 1 reconstruction and more surgery on it after (like a fix up)? And I can’t seem to find a highlights video off him if anyone has a link. Cheers

KM has us taking Fogarty in his phantom draft.

Good stuff. Hopefully no one else bids on him before pick 55 and we can get him for a late ND or rookie pick.
I could be wrong, but doesn't nominating a player mean that we have to take them in the ND and not the rookie draft?

I seem to recall the reason we didn't nominate Jake Kelly was because we were hoping he would last until the rookie draft... or something?

We nominated Kelly specifically as a Father-Son rookie in 2013, but we rescinded that nomination a couple of days before the rookie draft, after signing Tony Armstrong to the senior list as a Delisted Free Agent and committing the last rookie list spot (we only had one left) to the contracted but delisted Corey Gault.

Sack whoever was responsible for that one.
