Elite for a junior key defender? Because I’m not sure he actually defends very well, and as I mentioned earlier if you’re drafting him at that spot it’s to play on one of the opposition’s best key forwards.

Otherwise it’s like drafting a taller Tyson Goldsack and saying “his ball winning is elite for a tall defender”, but he doesn’t defend well enough to play on the Josh Kennedy/Jesse Hogan/Charlie Dixon types, and as opposed to a Coffield lacks the agility and precision kicking of a quality half back.

I know this is a long-winded post, but as with the problem of Josh Fraser who was a big man who played like a smaller, quicker, more nimble player... generally you want your big guys to play like big guys, first and foremost.
By position his ball winning is elite for a jnr, IMO.

I'm starting to cool a bit myself though as I invest more time into looking at others and I have concerns over his Aliir Aliir/ Harry O'Brien attitude to taking the game on. I don't know if that's a good enough 1 wood any more.

I like him still, but I don't know how well that fits with us given McLarty's skill set.
His ball winning is elite. That is what the basis for your initial concerns were and KPP wise to my knowledge he's the most productive ball winner in the draft pool behind only Wooler and Allen.

You'd want to have some confidence Balta can develop into a forward to pay the price. He has some nice qualities to suggest he can. I can understand the concern though.
Yeah that's the concern at that price I'd like him to have more than one AFL trick and we've seen too many guys with freak show athleticism not bring it at the next level.

My concern about his ball winning ability was that he wouldn’t be able to find the ball enough to play anywhere other than as a key defender. So his ball winning numbers being elite for a key defender do not allay my concerns as such.

Pretty sure his highest disposal tally for the year was playing as a key forward where he got 20 disposals and 3 goals...

Any interest in bidding on Ballenden?

Have people not been considering him because he's in Brisbane's academy or because they don't think he is in the discussion for top 10?

I'm yet to see anyone have him inside the top twenty other than Knightmare. So it wouldn't surprise me if they managed to have live picks at 18/19.

He's rated about 20 so they should get him easy.. I'd be tempted after he was the only player to ace the kicking test at the combine, he's monstrous too

I think that’s a little bit of the case. I would actually prefer him to Brander at least. My concern is he’s pretty slow. But can play either end of the ground, much like Balta without the X factor. Probably just as big of risk at 6 too. Will be interesting to see where he gets a bid.

Terry Wallace‏ @thelistmanager

Picks 11 : Last 5 drafted : Florent / Milera / Duggan/ Sheed / T Menzel.

No wonder we want to hold onto 6

Remember the days when Hine could pluck a Sidebottom at 11?

Speaking of which: what do you think of Cerra?
I don’t think he fits a need for us, so unless you had him significantly higher than all the other players available to you at #6 on a talent basis, you’d surely take someone else.

Footskills are very good, but lack of pace means he’d be too same-same in our midfield.

I reckon we think too short time in this regard, particularly with early picks where you are the best chance of getting a long termer. With Pendles and Sidebottom our team probably doesn't need another one paced mid. But if Cerra makes it, more than half his career will be played out after our other one paced mids have retired. By the time these draftees are genuine contributors the composition or our team will have changed.

Just take the best available.

Well that’s essentially what I’m saying. If we rate him on the same “tier” as a number of other players, we won’t pick him because he doesn’t fit a need.

If he’s clearly the best player available, you pick him.

The current number 1 intercept possession player per game in the AFL and comfortably the youngest in that group? Not too shabby! Melbourne will not regret their payment for him.
Yep, the one who is marginally ahead of Howe in 4th and Langdon in 5th league wide, about 1 and 1.4 less per game than Lever. But I reckon they'd have him well covered for just about every other stat like disposals, marks, contested possessions, meters gained. I'd reckon he's just become about their top earner now and I doubt he's the most worthy of that. If he becomes worthy then they've done well, otherwise....

At ground level no. Schache is clean at gorund level and a very nice snap. Lynch is miles ahead in the air and athletically.
Yeah no - Lynch is excellent below his knees for 200cm KPF and regularly finishes his own work when he can't clunk the mark initially.

Not sure where you got the idea that he isn't to be honest but I've watched a fair bit of Lynch over the journey and what I've seen doesn't tally up with what you are claiming.
