I was only kidding about drafting a replacement for Blair... I swear

It was fitting that Higgins was awarded the TAC Cup’s highest accolade by close friend and Collingwood midfielder/forward Tom Phillips. Higgins said Phillips’ father had been the biggest influence on his own personal career.

“Probably Anthony Phillips (biggest influence),” he said. “Tom and Ed’s Dad who have helped me through the season and going through vision and that sort of stuff and doing individual skills.”

It's a shame we're so short, if we had of drafted better over the last 4-5 years I would be stoked with Higgins, bit of the Stevie Js about him.

I reckon he'll end up one of the best from this draft.

Fwiw, for what it's worth, I currently have;

Pick 6: Darcy Fogarty - explosive forward who can play tall, small and also through midfield and down back. The true X-factor selection in 2017
Pick 38: Toby Wooller - key forward (193cm) who has footy in his blood (grandfather Fred captained a Geelong premiership). One of his games included 22 touches, 10 marks and 3.3, just a preview of what could come at AFL level
Pick 56: Callan Wellings - clean midfielder with good ball use and vision. Does a lot of defensive work and is also the captain of GWV Rebels
Pick 61: Tyler Kietel - 90 scoring shots in 21 WAFL games, kicking 46 goals. Ready to go forward.
Pick 70: Tyler Brown - I prefer we take him as a rookie but I'm guessing they'll use our last available selection on him unless a bid comes in.

Been looking at rookie prospects too. Flynn Appleby is a quality defender who has shut down both tall and small forwards in his age group. Marty Hore or Brody Mihocek I'd like to add for defensive depth

Gavin was very stick-like as a teen playing for Marcellin and Templestowe.

He built himself up a good deal through the gym through his late teens and early twenties.

Looking at Tyler's footage he has a similar physique and seems light on his feet like his Dad. A traditional wingman's build.

Hopefully decisions on him can come from solid observation by the Club.

Hard not to be a little swayed I guess if you were a big Rowdy fan like many of us.
Gavin Brown didn’t look small in the 1990 GF either. By the time he his career was ending he was playing for reserves footy and he was massive compared to the others.

My first 6 based on the new order would be;

# 1 Lions - Luke Davies-Uniacke.

Great fit for them.

# 2 Fremantle - Paddy Dow.

There are some question marks on whether Rayner would go home. SOS probably fuelling them

# 3 Carlton - Cameron Rayner

He is a perfect fit for them and they can get another mid at the next selection

# 4 North Melbourne - Jayden Stephenson

I reckon the kids flair will appeal to North along with his ability to play multiple roles

# 5 Fremantle - Adam Cerra

Just a really classy mid and along with Dow gives them two terrific kids to work with

# 6 Collingwood - Nick Coffield

I think Pies will go Coffield. Couple of areas to improve but very classy player. Reckon Bonar would be a big chance.

Hope you're right about Bonar. I Like the idea of his skills & pace. It's as though he's starting anew.

First im hearing about this wooller sounds good

I have no idea if you're right but I will be disappointed if North select Bonar at 4. I still want him. Skills & pace.
So the only vision I've seen of this guy is from the Tomorrow's Hero's video posted today, where he compared himself to David Mundy, and looked a bit vanilla from his highlights.

I think we need to get a bit of x-factor with pick 6. X-factor or key position.

The initial graft was from the hamstring and didn’t take properly. The second “tear” was just the first surgery that failed to hold. The surgeon that performed the 2nd time round was Julian Feller - AFL surgeon and knee specialist. It was a central patellar tendon autograph. At the combine he was assessed by almost every clubs doctor. His knee was pulled and yanked every which way and passed with flying colours by all doctors.
“Didn’t take properly”... the graft is tied through holes drilled into the bone, so in order to not take properly, we’re basically talking about the graft not providing a good enough scaffold for scar tissue to bridge and provide the necessary stability... it just sounds... odd.

Going to central patellar graft is a good move and Julian Feller is amongst the best.

As for his knee being pulled or yanked in every direction, so what? How many people you know ruptured their ACL by having a doctor pull on it? Haha. You won’t know until he’s a season into his career.

I don’t put much stock in straight line testing like sprints or vertical jump at the combine for someone like Bonar either. Change of direction is the important one.

I’m coming around a little bit to Naughton at 6 if it goes that way.

But only on the proviso that we think we can get Toby Wooller at 38. In two picks we can add two young KP types to cover each end.

If we don’t think Wooller gets to 38 then we take a Fogarty, Brander at 6 and then hope for a Petty or Clavarino at 38. Still gets us two KP to develop.

I'd be surprised if we went for Naughton simply because we made such a big call on Brown which seemed directly related to his footskills. Naughton has the same weakness so it'd be an about face on that direction. I personally like that we are using Dunn at full back and that is largely due to his kicking skills. It would seem a step backwards to turn our back on that.

I hope rumours of Naughton at 6 are wrong.

Fogarty as a tall/medium forward who can come in and have an immediate impact + a KPD at 38 makes much much more sense than Naughton at 6. Fogarty can take over JDG’s forward role (and will do it much better) and move in to the midfield in a few years once his tank is built up.

Why is it odd?

There are numerous things that can go wrong. There are varying methods of fixation (screw/staple/sutures), a whole smorgasbord of screw types, bone density, fixation position, surgical accuracy...

Maybe the rehab was too aggressive for the methods chosen. Could be anything.

Odd for exactly the reasons you’ve described. “Just didn’t take” makes it sound like IVF, where you pump the patient full of hormones (and other stuff!) and hope for the best. An ACL reconstruction involves threading tissue through bone, manually, and then testing it on the table. Much more likely that something went wrong surgically/the graft “failed” under loading than it “didn’t take” in the first place.
