Ok, why aren't you posting them here? o_O

Because I'm not person who needs self gratification from my work haha. It's why I just stick to this board mostly and don't bother having my own draft thread. Happy for others to post them, just don't see he point in me doing it and making it look like "hey look at me" haha.

No way man, they are informative, good value, nobody is going to think otherwise

Yeah well I'll probably end up doing half the ones on there, the other half are credited to Bishop. I'll mostly be the country kids as they're the ones I see most throughout the year.

Excellent, we probably don't know those kids as well as some... So do you know if Bishop is right about Coffield? would he be in a position to have any intel on him coming to us?

Both of us have heard Coffield is the most likely player. I would say Coffield 55%, Bonar 30%, Naughton 10%, Other 5%.

That's one the assumption LDU, Rayner, Cerra, Dow and Stephenson are gone. I think we'd pick Coffield over Stephenson, but the rest, not so sure. Certainly if Dow or Rayner slipped (nigh impossible), we'd take them.

Elite talent with massive upside

EVERY draft has the story of the talented player struck by injury, making him difficult to rank and, in some ways, one of the tougher prospects to place. In 2017 it's Aiden Bonar.

Bonar shaped as an early selection at this year's NAB AFL Draft a long way out before he was hit by a knee reconstruction in the lead-up to Vic Country's under-16 championships in 2015.

He returned from the rehabilitation to play at school level for Haileybury College last year before suffering another torn anterior cruciate ligament. The second surgery was more successful than the first, however, and he came back for the Dandenong Stingrays to play six games at the back end of this season.

The long-kicking 18-year-old, whose mother is from Papua New Guinea and father hails from Scotland, had plenty of recruiters heading out to those games to watch his progress having been underexposed due to injury.

WHY-THEY-SHOULD-PICK-HIM.jpg

The NAB AFL Draft Combine showed Bonar's elite athleticism, power and strength. He was one of the stars of the week of testing, equaling the all-time standing vertical jump record (89cm) and also coming second in the 20-metre sprint with a time of 2.90 seconds. It highlighted his extreme speed, jump and explosiveness, which comes through in his game.

Bonar appeals not just because of his athletic make-up. He can play as a marking and agile forward or big and strong midfielder who gets the ball and then pulls away from everyone around him. He put that on display in the NAB AFL All Stars game when he had 20 disposals and kicked a goal in perhaps his best outing of the year. He's quick, strong, big, has a good endurance base and has a presence wherever he is.

His injury history is clearly the sticking point, and that's why he was crowded by club doctors and physios at the medical screening during the combine. Each medico will have a slightly different take on his knee and whether he is more susceptible to any further concerns or if he has the same risk level as any other prospect.

Bonar has a unique set of skills and traits, which makes it difficult to compare him to many at the top level. With his power and strength, however, and ability to play in two parts of the ground, there are some similarities to new Bomber Jake Stringer.

His performances at the Combine and late in the year have rocketed Bonar into first-round calculations. It would be a surprise to see him still on the board into the 20s now, and there are also whispers he could sneak into the first dozen.

It will still be something of a punt to use an early pick on Bonar, but he's one who could really pay off. He's one of the most intriguing players in the pool but the mystery lies in his talent: who has seen enough to grab him and back him in?

No, we need a sure thing this year. It’s a top 10 pick so just take the best available.

No injury history, no upside, no amazing athlete who lacks footy smarts, no poor kicking, no choosing a tall who should be pick 20 but we take him because we need a tall.

Spent a few hours looking at all the potential players around our pick today ( just felt like it )

My thoughts now are:

1. Fogarty
Just too big, too strong, looks quick and agile + aggressive. If he comes along we potentially have 2 stormtroopers in JDG & Fog in the middle. To good to pass up

2. Noughton.
Best mark, strong and quickish. Good height and has played senior footy, just a knock on his kicking.

3. Coffield
Starting to jump off him a little, has good pace and evasive, just a little soft in close for my liking

4. Balta, Bonar, would like to see more highlights but both have a bit of X factor on what little I’ve seen

5. Stephenson
Sort of player that could develop in years and be a standout but not in time for us

6. Brander
Gone right off, reasonable build looks a footballer but very Stewart like and also looks soft in close

My pick of the draft Raynor by a country mile.

Did you take a look at O'Brien? I feel like so many people are rating him around 15 that he doesn't come up in pick 6 calculations... but he looks elite to me.

Can't handle a tag and kicking under pressure is a worry, hence why he's a late R1 pick.

Wow Bonar at 30% is a surprise, he's everything we need though

Well the percentages are just my estimate, not fact or anything. Pretty confident its Coffield but last week a few whispers came though that Bonar to Pies was a go.

You'd hope the footy gods would throw us a bone for once

Will you be attending the draft P4L?

Yeah I will. Last year I got on camera in that draftees doco that aired a couple of months ago and my twitter blew up thanks to people pointing it out haha.

Is Coffield a need though? Medium defenders aren't probably a priority right now.
We have Langdon, Crisp, Schaz & Maynard all playing defensive roles at the moment.
Yes Maynard can be released to the midfield, but we are already well stocked for medium defenders.
Why would you draft for need with a top 10 pick. We should be targeting the best player possible with this pick, if it happens to be a KPP then so be it.

I just read the article on here about Naughton and I am starting to think he could be a good pickup as we need more key defenders.

Everyone says his kicking is really bad. How bad is his kicking and could he turn it around? What are his other weaknesses/issues?

He seems to have some good qualities for a key defender.

Long term I think he will be bad pick up. Short term I see him as a Jason Cloke type. Good big body so dominates juniors but as age goes on class like Stephenson will be better.

I really like the look of Stephenson the most, so much upside. Hopefully he doesn't get taken earlier and we have another Bontempelli situation.

Disagree. I reckon we pretty stocked for solid players, I know others disagree, but I want us to shoot for a star. At our draft range, that will probably mean taking a bit of a risk. Bonar for me.

That disappoints me a little as I was really hoping we'd go for Fogarty or Brander at 6. I guess I'd like a plan B to be developing for us if we miss out on Lynch next year.

I also feel as though we have so many defenders already, I don't see the need like others do. We could use some pace back there which Coffield has, but if we've given up our 2018 2nd rounder for Murray then we obviously rate him and should back him in. Is Murray a similar type to Coffield?

How accurate have these types of whispers been in the past from this far out? I don't get any info on who we like, but I had myself convinced we must be looking closely at Brander for him to come out and say that he'd like to come to a club like us where he can have an impact straight away. Also, Shade saying Darcy is moving into defence made me think we must be going KPF at 6.

I've seen quite a few draft watchers claim Brander is a bit of a reach for the Pies at 6 recently. Most people had him around the mark in their power rankings until the last couple of weeks in which he's started slipping. I don't really understand how a player continues to slip once all the U18 games are finished. I would have thought the only power rankings that are still shuffling should be the clubs and that would all be based on how they interview. Is Brander really a big reach at 6?

While on the topic of Brander I've noticed some phantom drafts have him dropping a long way down the 1st round (past GWS). GWS have pick 11 and would have thought Brander was no chance for them to get once the Academy zone changed for them. Do you think they would let him slip past them if he fell that far? I can't imagine they'd let him go as they'd know him better than any club (I guess if they did let him slide it wouldn't say much for him).

If Dow, LDU, Rayner, Cerra and say Brayshaw went top 5 who would you take at 6 for the Pies?

I don’t pretend to know anything about the kids but the debate is interesting to read.

certainly understand the need for a Kpp but with Moore Mclarty and maybe some high confidence in landing lynch maybe best available is the go even if on face value a midfielder or defender is surplus to requirements. It’s the first high pick we’ve had in years so we don’t want to waste it on anybody who isnt worthy of being pick 6 just because we have a development need in a certain area.

Tough call.
