Draft night couldnt hsve gone much better for Collingwood really given our pre draft situation.

Due to woeful list management we were always only going to use 3 picks so we had to make them count.

And boy oh boy did we.

Stephenson; wanted him since his awesone performance on GF day and so did Hine. Sheahan (the best judge of young takent) consistently said he was the best player in the draft. No real injury concern unlike Fogarty. Great get.

Murphy; should not have been available at 38. Still have no idea why he slipped from a top 10 rating to 38, but as some have stated one particular dark blue club ignored him completely which would have helped the slip. Hes that third forward we need but can also intercept mark off half back. Bargain at 38.

Brown; will be a better player then Callum in time. Similar to Josh Daicos hasnt really shown what hes capable of yet but will be a best 22 player. The club would have matched a bid at 38, dont worry about that so to get him with our final pick was just great.

With a limited hand in what was supposed to be a weak draft we did well and got lucky in some ways, which you always need on draft night.

Now lets not go stuffing it up by pickinf up Crameri in the next few days shall we (which is still a distinct possibility)

We have a lot of faith in Mason Cox, it seems. I'm becoming perplexed by our lack of KPP selections beside Moore in recent seasons, but this would be alleviated somewhat if:

A. We rookie someone like Jordan Butts (and perhaps another project tall, if there are any left?).

B. We land Lynch (or maybe Patton). No kidding ;)

C. We rookie someone like Crameri to act as a foil for Moore for the next 2 seasons.

D. We go tall next year. There will be a multitide of KPP options next year by all reports.

I'm not naive enough to think Lynch is even likely at this stage, let alone a lock. But we are at least in the hunt and I have no no doubt we have been in talks with his management for some time.

Have to say I'm highly skeptical about Ben Reid's ability to avoid injury from this point on. Anything he gives us is a bonus.

Looking at our forward line, in a couple of years we could potentially have the following options:

Talls: Moore, Lynch, Cox, 2018 1st rounder.

3rd tall: Stephenson, Murphy, Crocker.

Smalls: Kirby, Elliott, Fasolo.

WHE, Sidebottom and an ageing Pendles rotating through.

Taking into account our needs in defence, this still leaves us a couple of 193+cm payers short. Given the development time for talls we can't just leave it to future draftees. In the dream scenario of us getting Lynch as a free agent next year, we have more options (aka Moore options) but we are still a couple of talls short, if only as depth. By all means build a mobile forward line with one real tall option, but what if he goes down with an injury?

I understand that.. it could have gone either way.. Stephenson or Fogarty are players we need. We opted for Stephenson. Perhaps next yr.. similar type to the Fog is what we'll target.

Filling in holes step by step.

But my heart was set on seeing a kpp out there next yr. Obviously not gonna happen now.. unless McLarty steps up.. hope he has a great pre season. Massive football growth spurts.

My take on the draft process is that if you can bring in 2 AFL talents each year you will be in good shape long term. As I just said on the draft board I had 3 and a 1/2 sure things in this draft. Stephenson became the half as we crept closer and it seemed his heart issues were less and less significant.

He remains a half mainly because of comments he made about needing to watch his diet to manage the condition. At this point I’d be calling him spaghetti because my 15 yo goddaughter puts his arms to shame. Now if he struggles to add the bulk ala Oxley, Broomhead, Aish and WHE given he plays a more contested game than most outside runners I have concerns. Daisy was able to do it with a wiry frame, but there’s no guarantees that Stephenson can be the same level of competitor. Either way though I feel confident enough that he’s one of the two hits we needed.

Our next two picks were obviously more speculative, but given their mix of traits and where the game is going I’d say we’re 50/50 to get another hit there. From that perspective I can’t complain. A lot of pressure is now on to land Lynch and the club seem to have been very purposeful about their approach this off-season so at this stage we’ve done alright aside from the deal on Murray. Pressure’s on the coaching group now!

Well done on an awesome selection with jaidyn....good to see u have the guts to take the risk and draft this fine talent....as someone who knows jaidyn and his family very well....i couldnt be more happy for him...even thou im an essendon supporter...i say this with out bias but ive seen his career unfold in front of my eyes from a scrawny little kid in under 12s ,right thru his tac years to now being selected by one of the biggest clubs in the league...he has strived to be an afl footballer all his life.....and has busted his gut to get there....couldnt be prouder of him....and for once in my life i can say...thanks collingwood.....this kid is a jet
Let's hope you're a good judge.

(I think you'll be right too)

Daisy for a good 2 years was off the charts. He was more than just a footballer.. played the game like he was from another planet.. never forget it.

Stephenson has done the business in finals as well.. f love that shit re.

Might have to have a look at the tac final. If they have the entire game on YouTube.. will definitely watch it when I get time.

Adam Cerra got interviewed on 6pr over here in Perth last night about getting drafted by Freo.

He sounded absolutely filthy. Said all the right things but had a tone to his answers that said "I just want the next 2 years to be over so I can come home."

Thanks for sharing your various posts on JS. What are your thoughts on his kicking? I've seen some say it's fine, others that it's sometimes a little wayward. I'm not expecting he'll be as good as Wells (not many are) but am hoping he can be not too far behind and at least reliable.

I don’t get why people didn’t wanna take a risk at 6 in a weak draft with no real stand out kpp. We need superstars desperately, no point being conservative and picking an ok to pretty good safe selection in our current position.

I hate being a negative nancy. I'm generally one of those hippies who is always positive about life, but I struggle to get excited about this draft. We went for the unusual picks (as per usual), Stephenson is a risk at 6 that we didn't need to take. His kicking is below par.

Nathan Murray is just a project player, who is basically a 50/50.

Tyler Brown has a long long way to go.

Don't get me wrong, I want these players to become hall of famers. However, I struggle to see if any of them are ever going to be above average.

Ps, I hate to f$&king say this but the tigers killed it. Amazing drafting by them. Only change would be CCJ for Taylor. Higgins, CCJ, Balta, Naish and Miller. Maybe the loss of Balme has been underestimated by our footy department? They recognised an issue and sorted it out completely.
Higgins is a midget, Balta is a project 50/50 player, never heard of Miller and CCJ is 50/50. Naish wins basically no contested ball, similar to Morton, Aish and Toumpas.

his kicking has improved a lot...watch the all stars game...was pretty good there....he will do a clanger now and then like all players do.....his shot for goal on the run or stationary is elite......just when he goes to hit up a target is the only time he may clunck it but....you have time and hes a very good student and will learn from people who are will to invest time into him....i can see him hanging out with pendles a lot and learning the art of hitting a target ...he will definitly get better....i think he is you pendelbury replacment....plays a bit like him /dangerfield...elusive and good decision maker but maybe has a bit more toe than penles......great selection....only thing is...for the first time in my life...i have to go for collingwood sometimes...but never against the bomber...i can see it now....he will tear us up on anzac day hahahahahahaha

Have to laugh, pre-draft everyone was saying how much this one fell away after the top however many picks. Then we get to pick 60 and pass (about when everyone else started passing, too) and people are carrying on saying our list management is poor, etc.

We could literally get a player out of the VFL and onto the Rookie list who will be better than pick 60+

I like Stephenson.. there's a real air of confidence about him. No nonsense straight to the point honest responses. Definitely seems sure of himself. And has a steely look. His reaction after being drafted impressed me as well.

This guy looks like he's gonna work his ass off.
Yeah, if you go through the Carlscum board they were begging us to take him. One of them came back, the smart one (I think there is only one) and said good choice and he would be a ripper.

Have a Merry Christmas everyone.

Thanks too everyone for making it an enjoyable 2017.

Remember to laugh and be happy.

Hopefully see yas in the winter mths.

Love yas.

His combine 2.95sec 20m means he does have more toe than Pendles and whilst I think he could learn lots from Pendles (as any draftee could), 1 question mark I have on his game is kicking for goal so from your post JS may already be ahead of him there. Where do you see his best position on our list short and long term? Could it be HFF (use pace and kick goals) / wing in short term?

The rookie draft gives us the opportuinty to try before we buy, have a look at a few kids and then make up our minds.
