Thought we better get a NEAFL thread up and running for this year.

First real bit of news was the practive match against Aspley.

http://www.goldcoastfc.com.au/news/2017-03-18/106point-win-for-suns-neafl-squad

With 17 listed players in the squad, the Gold Coast SUNS NEAFL team have easily accounted for Aspley to the tune of 106 points in a practice match at Metricon Stadium on Saturday.

The game looked over at quarter-time, with Gold Coast enjoying 15 scoring shots to one to open up a 44-point lead, eventually going on to a 20.16 (136) to 4.6 (30) victory over the Hornets.

The SUNS looked switched on from the outset, with Jarrad Grant finding Tom Nicholls in the opening minute for the big ruckman to slot home the first goal of the game. Moving the ball with precision, the SUNS piled on six consecutive goals going into quarter time but should have led by far more, with a run of eight consecutive behinds the only tarnish on an impressive quarter.

The home side kept the foot down in the second term with five goals to one, with Aspley taking until the six-minute mark to boot their solitary goal of the half. Rookie Cam Loersch’s two second-quarter majors and scoreboard impact from the team’s U19 Academy players helped the SUNS to a 67-point lead at the main break.

In temperatures nudging 30 degrees, the intensity of the game slowed after half time, with Gold Coast easing their way to a comprehensive win.

The SUNS had an even spread of contributors, with Brandon Matera putting his hand up for a round one berth, booting five goals including a brilliant effort from the boundary line late in the final quarter.

Loersch finished with four, his upside highlighted with a strong contested mark at the top of the goal square deep into time on.

GC SUNS 6.9 11.10 15.14 20.16 (136)
ASPLEY 0.1 1.3 3.5 4.6 (30)

Goals: B. Matera 5, C. Loersch 4, T. Nicholls 2, M. Saad 2, S. Watson 2; D. Macpherson, J. Grant, B. Scheer, C. Offerman, R. Davis

How quick is Saad compared to his brother?
Adam is quicker, but I think Jnr is still a bit quicker than average.

That said, how similar to they look mid flight? Spooky.

The main criticism I hear of jnr is that he lives inside the 50 arcs. If he can build a tank to push further up the ground and get back it will do him a lot of service to try and get drafted.

Yep Sunny is right from what I saw on Saturday. Not lightning but still quick for his size. And already looks quicker than our current mid sized fwds like Davis & Grant.

Definitely got some x-factor about him. Loves a snap out of the pack. And looked to have good skills on both sides of his body.

He was fairly cooked on Saturday, didn't play a lot in the last qtr. But give him a couple of months more training and he could really have an impact at NEAFL level this season and might even earn himself a rookie spot next year.

NEAFL praccy match now an hour later than previously scheduled. Guessing to have time for AFLW presentations and then clear Metricon...?

Going to have to play short quarters to get game finished in time for Q Clash.

20 listed players! That has to easily be the most we have ever had in a NEAFL game right?

And boy our midfield looks tasty. Imagine Lonergan, Brodie and Scheer in there together. It wouldn't be a great kick out of the middle, but the entire ground will shake when they all attack the ball at the same time.

Throw Hallahan in with that lot as well - he and Lonergan always seems to dominate at the NEAFL level

Put Fiorini on the outside of that and I can see a big win on the cards. Loersch is going to have a big part to play in the NEAFL team this year with a lack of key position forwards, especially with Grant not playing this week.

Shaw is the main emergency. Will only play first quarter. Have a funny feeling hell come in.
