Geelong are in for a world of hurt. Their drafting have been quite awful from the players they've traded in. Geelong have ZERO youth coming in....
It goes back further than that. You have to go back to 2008 to find the last time they drafted a player that went on to be selected in a 40 man All Australian squad (Motlop x1 - 2013), and he's hardly what you'd call a consistent, A-Grade footballer.
I'd say the last time they came out of a draft having picked up some unqualified A-grade talent was 2007 (Taylor & Mumford).
Nakia Cockatoo I'll give the benefit of the doubt to as I think he has potential, but that's 8-9 years without unearthing a single All Australian standard footballer.
To compound this very ordinary record in the draft, as you've pointed out they've consciously traded out of the first round of the 2015, 2016 and 2018 drafts to prolongue their stint at the top. If it works and they win a flag in this window, then it will be seen as a successful strategy, but either way they are staring into the abyss from potentially as early as next year when the likes of Mackie and Lonergan will be gone, Taylor will be 32 and Selwood/Hawkins will both be over 30.
For reference here are their entries to that squad since 2010:
2017: Dangerfield, Selwood
2016: Dangerfield, Selwood, Enright
2015: Nil
2014: Hawkins, Lonergan, Selwood, Taylor
2013: Enright, Mackie, Motlop, Selwood, Taylor
2012: Hawkins, Taylor, Selwood, Enright, Lonergan
2011: Enright, Johnson, Kelly, Selwood, Scarlett, Taylor
2010: Ablett, Enright, Chapman, Johnson, Kelly, Taylor, Selwood
