4 years of drug scandal .....new coach, new administration ....the new era simply must have a new captain ....why does Jobe Watson complain about the pressure of AFL , will i or won't i play AFL again ....and yet he puts his hand up to be Captain again

FFS .....Watson is a hypocrite and full of contradictions .....or maybe he's just a touch smarter than two bricks??

Essendon players prepare to vote for their next skipper

Not that I would ever say I told you so but I told people so. :)

Its why Essendon are going to be so hard to predict this year. If they can monitor and avoid these types of injuries then they should do ok, if not they could finish in the bottom 3.
I agree with you .....also as mentioned in the press, the coach has a difficult management job, telling youngsters that got plenty of opportunities in 2016 that they're out & replaced by the banned 12

Conversely you've been out 12 months and then potentially you're playing in the reserves .......yes Worsfold has a difficult year in front of him

Just noticed ....Essendon have also replaced their mascot .....could it be that the mascots performance was also drug enhanced ??? ....makes you wonder?

So did I. Even Wayne Carey struggled not being in a footy environment for year. Rehab is entirely different to being away from the club etc for a year.
That's why I can't believe powa are carrying on about Ryder and Monfries who have about 1/10th of Carey's natural ability!

We saw the soft tissue injuries with Brad Crouch and that was within a club environment. I think as long as the various fitness staff are on top it should be fine. To be honest I would think a 15 game program with staggered game resting should be the most anyone can hope.

There are so many precedents now with players coming back after 12 months off, and they all struggle. On top of the banned Essendon/Ex-Essendon players there is also Keefe and Thomas for Collingwood back and allowed to play this year. So it will be interesting to see how they all go.

I don't know what you are talking about, look how good Jarryd Roughhead is looking after his 12 months off

There seems to be a few injuries around the clubs, I wonder if this is going to be one of those years.

I said "not being in a footy environment".

Jarryd Roughead was able to train and rehab with his club.
Never said Tex was shit after his year off either, as he had contact with the club. Rehabbing is entirely different to running laps on your own.

did you watch the video?

Well the case against the North Melbourne player was dropped by the prosecutors. Reading the article on the case yesterday it wasn't surprising...

A ROBBERY charge against rising AFL star Trent Dumont has been dropped mid trial — and a judge says the only surprise is that prosecutors did not abandon their case two years ago.

On Wednesday, Mr Dumont and his former co-accused, Joshua David Lomas, smiled, shook hands and embraced as prosecutors formally tendered no evidence against them.

Prosecutor Edward Stretton-Smith said he had received instructions, from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, that neither man would be pursued any longer.

Judge Paul Muscat expressed frustration with the situation — but said that it was in no way the fault of Mr Stretton-Smith, an independent barrister hired by the ODPP for the trial.

“I’m hardly surprised — what’s surprising is that it got this far,” he said.

“I’m not criticising you at all, Mr Stretton-Smith, it’s those who are charged with the responsibility of ensuring there’s a reasonable prospect of conviction.

“It should not have got to the stage where the prosecution forms a view after its principle witness has completed giving his evidence — particularly where his evidence was contradicted, in substantial ways, by the CCTV.

“(Dropping the case) is the right decision to make, don’t get me wrong ... it came two years too late.”

The Advertiser can now reveal the case has seemed in jeopardy since it began on Monday, with its opening address delayed for half a day while Mr Stretton-Smith waited for instructions.

Throughout that day and Tuesday, Judge Muscat repeatedly asked whether those instructions had been given, with Mr Stretton-Smith conceding he was still waiting.

His Honour was also critical of the ODPP staffer assigned to support Mr Stretton-Smith, noting she was not in court to relay his concerns to Acting Director Ian Press.

On Tuesday afternoon, counsel for Mr Dumont and Mr Lomas flagged their intent to seek to have the case thrown out if the ODPP did not act.

Even the case’s pre-trial passage, through the Adelaide Magistrates Court, was beleaguered.

The duo were charged in October 2014 and first faced court a month later, only for the case to be delayed twice while an “additional statement” was sought from alleged victim Malusi Ketse.

Their trial was then listed for April 2016 but did not go ahead, leading to this week’s aborted proceedings.

On Monday, Mr Dumont, 21, and Mr Lomas, 20, pleaded not guilty to one count each of aggravated robbery.

Prosecutors had alleged they robbed Mr Ketse of $70 at Banksia Park, northeast of Adelaide, in October 2014.

Jurors earlier heard the duo denied the accusation when questioned by police, but Mr Dumont conceded he was “being a smart-ass” because he thought Mr Ketse had short-changed them.

Giving evidence on Tuesday, Mr Ketse said Mr Dumont had demanded “the whole money” from him at the end of the 47-minute fare from the city.

He agreed he “never saw” either man take the money and did not know “how he took it”, but insisted he was robbed because “I lost $70”.

He said the duo attacked him outside the taxi, causing him to fall and break his glasses, then held him down before running away.

Mr Ketse rejected suggestions, from defence counsel, that Mr Dumont had been asking for his change as well as accusations that he was lying or attempting to mislead the jury.

He also denied that a hand seen, on the taxi’s CCTV footage, physically pulling Mr Dumont out of the passenger seat belonged to him.

At one stage he declined to answer further questions in cross-examination, saying he had “explained” himself and was not being “treated like a human being”.

On Wednesday, Mr Stretton-Smith tendered no evidence against Mr Dumont and Mr Lomas.

While that leaves an avenue open for the ODPP to pursue the case again, he said — and asked it be noted on the court record — that there would be no further proceedings.

Paul Tothill, for Mr Lomas, said the trial’s jury should be asked to enter a finding of not guilty and formally acquit both men.

Tony Burns, for Mr Dumont, agreed.

“The problem is this prosecution went on for two years, and there was always a gap in the evidence with regard to the theft — and that was never going to be filled,” he said.

“This is scandalous ... it has cost the state and parties a lot of money ... there really should be a directed acquittal.”

Judge Muscat said he was sympathetic to that argument, but there had clearly been “a case to answer” based on Mr Ketse’s evidence and so a directed acquittal was not appropriate.

He thanked the jury of five men and seven women for their service and urged them not to view the trial as having been “a waste of your time”.

“It would not be that difficult for you to understand the reasons why the prosecution has decided to no longer proceed with the matter,” he said.

“It’s unfortunate it’s taken this long for the ODPP to come to this realisation that, effectively, there was no reasonable prospect of conviction against either defendant.

“I would have thought a proper review of the file would have revealed such an outcome.”

Outside court, North Melbourne’s general manager of football operations, Cameron Joyce, spoke on behalf of Mr Dumont and the club.

“Trent and the football club are obviously very happy with the outcome of today,” he said.

“It gives Trent the opportunity to put everything behind him and focus on his football and the great opportunity he has with the North Melbourne Football Club this year.”

Mr Lomas said he was “very happy with the outcome”.

The Advertiser is seeking comment from the ODPP.

That taxi driver sounds like a piece of shit. How am I not surprised

Got to love this from Kochie

"The AFL will become the first elite foreign competition to play a regular-season game for points in China, beating the likes of the NBA, English Premier League, Major League Baseball and NFL," he said.

Does he realize the Chinese soccer league are throwing millions at the likes of Tevez, Oscar, Rooney etc to play in their own league? They don't need or want the EPL to play in China for points. They're building their own league to compete against the EPL.

It's because the NBA, EPL, MLB and NFL teams actually want to achieve something back home.

£30 mill for 1 player!
$3mill for powa that has to be spent there.
Koch is in too deep now to back out.
The moment it got switched from the Olympic stadium to this shit hole the writing was on the wall!
And not the Great Wall either.

For reference, in the Asian Champs League coming up, Adelaide United are playing a team looking to sign Diego Costa (currently leading goal scorer in the EPL) for £600k per week. They already have Ramires who was a key player for Chelsea. So get along to Hindmarsh to see a real sporting battle with a China-Aus feel.
