We didn't have the media presence to protect our players developing reputations as duckers, or as suckering opposition players into punching them.

Similarly if we had former players all over the media talking about how Sandi is a great mark when people aren't grabbing his arms he would get lots more free kicks, the umpire expects him to mark and he didn't? That opponent must have illegally prevented it. Then it becomes a self fulfilling cycle.

I've always thought the umpiring bias was for or against certain players rather than whole teams. But it does make a difference when you have a group of favoured or non-favoured players all together in the same team.

Not sure why it happens, maybe some players are generally more polite to the umpires than others.

So, assuming you're right, and there's a clear bias/agenda in favour of West Coast and against Fremantle, why is that the case?

Explain it to me. I went to the Fremantle finals games in 2015 and your crowds are no less vocal or intimidating than eagles games so it's not crowd related

So the AFL want the Eagles to succeed/win but not Fremantle and instruct the umpires accordingly? What's the motivation for that
You and 3/4 of your board have all commented on the Bullies free ride with the umps.

So you think it can/does happen, just not when it's your team?

I don't see it as an AFL conspiracy but the conscious and unconscious bias of umpires. Against clubs, against players and perceived game plans.

Yesterday's game was surprising that the three umps were no name Victorians. Usually Farmer or Dalgleish can be counted on for some West Coast help. And Dalgleish is reluctant to Freo frees inside 50. You can go on.

There are also team views. There are more harsh on holding the ball or held up on some teams. We find in hard to get htb decisions but give them up easier. Longmire was commenting that that was the case in Bulldogs -Sydney game.

And then players. Suban gets caught a bit. Because he has that reputation there are some that should be a ball up he gets pinged on. Dawson is the same. Gets some very soft against him (as well as some deserved!) by reputation.

Im not sure if umps watch games with commentary but they should never. The biased commentary can subconsciously influence future decisions.

One would hope that the AFL is doing these studies to reduce bias in umpiring however stats seem to suggest no.

And the the last word on umpiring bias. Leigh Fisher.

For me that's more a matter of why the Bulldogs free kick count doesn't get the same media scrutiny as it does for west coast

That and I'm a hypocrite ;)

On the why.

I'm sure it's not conspiratorial. More unconcious bias lead from how teams are perceived by the media.

Last year the Doggies were the media darling. Injuries, captain down, fast attractive football, etc. Hawks have been previously. West Coast are seen as the powerhouse of the West, high scoring, coleman medallist, etc. Freo the 'special' brother with a chip on his shoulder.

I'm sure Ross Lyon's image/gameplan/disdain of the media doesn't help our cause.

God I hope Geelong weren't this shit last week. Otherwise we're in a world of hurt.
I really wanted to pick the Kangas but in the end didn't have the guts.

Geelong after a trip west, and the Kangas were OK early against WC and always lift against Geelong.

It's early in the game so it might turn but it certainly doesn't look good.

Waratahs vs Crusaders will be hard to turn off to watch Dockers get flogged again.

About 2 whistles in 10 mins of game time so far as an aside.

Currently watching Hearts v Celtic, and it's 0-5. Not exactly a cliffhanger.

But what's amazing is that literally 80%+ of the (Hearts) crowd have gone home 10 minutes before the end. I don't think i've ever seen that sort of abandonment of a footy club here. Even when teams are getting spanked you'd usually see at least half the crowd hang around to the end.
