While women’s football continues to surge in Tasmania (from just seven teams to 88 teams in four years) and male participation in other traditional football states has grown 5-20 per cent between 2006 to 20017, according to AFL Tasmania’s own Junior/Youth Football Review the state’s male participation has fallen 14.7 per cent over the same time.
A breakdown of the figures is even more alarming. The number of juniors (eight to 13-year-olds) has fallen 10 per cent and the seniors have fallen 12 per cent, but it is youth football that is the main area of concern.
For boys in the youth category — ages 13 to 18 and the key conduit between children’s and senior football — there has been a fall of 22 per cent in just over a decade. It has resulted in 26 fewer youth teams in that time (a rate of more than two a season) and as a consequence the loss of 21 senior teams across Tasmania.
The Canadian numbers refer to something called Aussie X, that can't be the same as AFLX, can it?
As there is no 2018 participation Thread yet, I will place this here.
S.Duncan, a Lecturer in Sports Media & Sport Business, & a regular Media commentator (including AFL Record) on the sports' industry, is usually accurate in his public pronouncements on sports' quantitative matters. I assume he made enquiries with AFL Vic. on current regd. nos. before he wrote this article.
On 28.8.18 in The Age, he made the very curious claim that "There are more than 1800 Australian Rules Football Clubs in Victoria with almost 700,000 REGISTERED (my emphasis) players. And that's before you count coaches, volunteers and supporters".
The AFL Vic. figures for 2017 were, for Vic., 1139 Clubs & 461,680 registered players (See post # 4 above).
Is he including schools in AF comps. to claim there are "more than 1800" Clubs in 2018?
How has he reached the extraordinary no. of "almost 700,000 registered players" in Vic. in 2018? AF registered nos. are growing strongly in Vic. & mos other parts of Aust. -but a 50% increase is not possible for 2018.
