I think he's bumped up the age of 'young' to be about 25, to suit the argument.

It doesn't really matter, as generally speaking, the poorest performing teams will be the ones with the best youth; Brisbane, Carlton & Melbourne.
It sort of stands to reason and even if the aforementioned teams don't prove to have the best youth, the perception of them having so, presents.

To be fair he first used the u25 to rate the Carlton youth and then stated is was in the top group that included the Pies. I agree that poor performance will result in better draft pick (and therefore generally better talent), there was some significant over rating of the quality of the under 22s on the Pies list. Also note that it is not as if the Pies have played more finals in the last 4 years.

Melbourne have had the best young list for 10 years. Haven't played finals once.
