Pick 41 - Collingwood - Tom De Koning

The autopick has put me in a little bit of a bind here as the Pies are scrambling to pick a tall, but it's not much of a reach to go for De Koning.

Listed as a skinny ruck, De Koning is arguably more of a tall forward who is learning to ruck, and is a excellent kick for goal, particularly on the snap. With his speed off the mark and his size, he's a threat against most tall defensive types and will straighten the Pies up should he develop.

I certainly don't like the Pies' current stocks given it's basically only McCarty, Moore and Cox, so this helps them out immensely.

Pies currently have just 6 players who are over 6'4", and only one other player capable in a KPP role (Lynden Dunn). Gives them some flexibility with Moore as well.

20yo 182cm 63kg (bantamweight)

X factor small forward NEAFL Rising Star 29 goals from 10 games, and performed admirably as an overage player at NAB Champs.
Academy boy Jack Payne considered, but no bids, can wait for last pick or rookie. Considered both Mitch Crowden and another
topical overager Hamish Brayshaw, with a tenuous link to Brisbane, with his brother a possible no. 1 pick.

Pressure player and/or small forward was the target here, decided on the more speculative pick, as Brisbane list has most
boxes picked on type. Plenty of hybrid multi positional types, but currently lacking dedicated small goal sneak.

Unfortunately, Essendon get an absolute steal here (in my opinion). This board clearly does not rate him and I'm not sure why.

Pick 49 is Charlie Ballard.

D_P_S mirrors my thoughts almost to a tea so to explain the pick I'll quote his excellent post in the main draft board phantom draft

Pick 26 – Geelong - Charlie Ballard 195cm 81kg
Tall Utility
Sturt/South Australia

Ive done a complete 180 with Ballard, I wasn’t impressed with his kicking at the championships and had written him off but it wasn’t until I went back over old notes and watched some more footage did I soften my stance on Ballard. Ballard has gone through a growth spurt turning into a genuine tall much like English last year. Ballard shows the agility, speed and composure of a smaller player and that’s what has clubs excited by his potential.

So earlier I brought up his kicking which yes was poor at times in the championships but what was impressive was the options he took with ball in hand, he is a great decision maker with the ball and his composure is some of the best in this draft. With his agility he can catch the opposition off guard especially with his talk gangly frame you wouldn’t think he could move like that and the other thing is that he is a willing tackler and despite his frame he still manages to take people down and most tackles stick.

Ballard played mostly on the wing in the championships but he has also played good footy as a key defender and midfielder at school and for Sturt. He was one of the better players in Sturts grand final win playing as a forward sharing similarities to Jack Gunston. Ballard is every chance of becoming a gun forward with his good workrate, tackling and decision making and that’s why im considering him for the Cats.

Why Geelong?
Ballard has huge potential and has had a very good year at all levels and played well in every position. And like Ling Ballard has a great attitude and a he supports his teammates and I believe would fit in well with the Cats. Ballard is also an attacking player that plays with enthusiasm and will go in hard when he needs to. With this pick Geelong get a highly talented tall capable of playing in any position and the potential to be one of the better players in this draft.

Who Else?
He isn’t a pure forward so I will need to pick a forward at my next pick but Ballard can fill that position. There isn’t a stack of good key forwards or outside runners for this pick so if im taking one later it will be one with plenty of potential and an attacking nature.

However, why Essendon...

They need more genuine midfielders than what Ballard is but I don't see anyone available who is a better prospect than is Ballard. I feel that if he's available anywhere close to this point in the actual draft that someone will have an absolute steal on their hands. Therefore, this is simply best available.

Blue and Silver is up next. I have a fair idea the player who was second on my list will be snapped up here.
