Think Billy Hartung with skill and footy smarts. A small mid/half-back who has had a solid year, and has been able to showcase his bag of tricks (1. being his explosive speed and agility). He will probably start his career as a small defender or forward and in time hopefully rotate through the centre. This pick could be seen as insurance for Gaff, if he heads back to Victoria next year. Regardless Ling is the best available and may go earlier in the real thing.

30 - Melbourne Demons - Jordan Houlahan

The Demons' list doesn't have a lot of issues at present, but they could certainly do with another prolific avenue to goal after losing Watts. Houlahan brings pace, foot skills and great lead up ability and will slot straight in to work with Hogan, Garlett and whoever of Tom McDonald and Weideman lines up forward.

Ok. Really tough pick here.

This pick for me comes down to Garner vs Worpel vs Ross. I think all would be worthy selections here and I could make a case for any.

My first two picks have been safe and I'm thrilled with them so I think here I can take a bit more of a risk.

I'll write more of a rationale later but for now...

Pick 32 - Melbourne - Jack Petrucelle

There's a few good options here, but Melbourne lack a little outside speed and probably a bit aged in the small and medium defensive ranks. Petrucelle can start off on a flank and tear down the field to deliver the football with pin point precision.

This is about where his value is, and his performance late in the year showed that he's not afraid to stand in the tackle and take the game on, solidifying his position in the 20-35 range.

Pick 34 - Sydney Swans - Oscar Clavarino
Key Defender - 195cm - 85kg
Dandenong Stingrays - VIC Country
Plays like: Jacob Weitering

Th Swans have been a powerhouse for years but the old guard is slowly changing, which means guys like Heath Grundy will be gone soon. Their key back sticks are fairly thin so will be aiming for a good tall around this mark in the draft.

In comes 'Clav'. Oscar is a key defender with serious leadership credentials, co-captaining both VIC Country and the Stingrays in 2017. Like fellow Stingrays graduate Jacob Weitering, Clavarino is a mobile and reliable key defender and an outstanding intercept marker on the field. He has excellent endurance for a big man and comes with exceptional character - well regarded by his peers and coaches.

He has some knocks that he'll no doubt improve on when he gets to the next level, but is a good pick here and someone that could become a key player for Sydney in a few years time.

Captain of Vic Metro and made the All-Australian side so a little underrated. Moves well and his a solid left foot kick with obvious leadership qualities. Garner is an ideal half-back who can set up the play but has the tools to play midfield as he can win his own ball having an inside/outside game. His game should translate well in the AFL where he does everything well but probably doesn't have a standout attribute apart from Leadership.

Choice made easier by Clavarino going who I think will be an outstanding Key Defender.

Garner can also be thrown the new ball, generates deceptive speed and bounce from...........................................

Pick #36 (GEEL) Tom McCartin

Completing a trio of developing talls for the Cats so far, i'm picking The Baby McCartin. I have liked the glimpses of high level talent this December birthday kid has shown this year. A couple of games i saw where he looked great for patches and his athleticism was confirmed at the Combine. Very good endurance, workrate and athleticism to go with the McCartin family footy talent.

Has to complete Year 12 next year but that's perfectly ok for the Cats as they can give him plenty of time to develop while contending the next year or two.
