Harbrow and Lemmens also rested for the last qtr.

Looks like it's Lonergan and these 2 who are in the mix for Rd1.

Nicholls, Lonergan, Hallahan & Lyons starting midfield.

Brooksby playing key defender. Spencer & Scrimshaw other main defenders. Harbrow, Willis, Lemmens other 3.

Big Leorsh and Watson key fwds. Grant, MSaad, Matera, Macpherson up there as well.

Very one sided game so far.

Saad snapped a lovely goal on the left. Matera & Grant lively. Scheer tackling everything. Scrimshaw couple of nice intercept marks. Looks to run and attack off backline every chance he gets.

Nicholls working hard. Covering a lot of ground.
Really excited about Scrimshaw. Feel like he will end up being a Docherty type player for us - may take a year or two to develop but will be an incredible driving force from defence

Looks like Matera came back strong from his eye surgery.

Also when was the last time Nicholls kicked 1 goal let alone 2 in a game! Nice.

Nicholls was very good. Looks like the ruck competition has kicked him into gear. Took a few strong contested marks.

Matera is frustrating. Yeh he kicked 5, but he turned the ball over at least 5 times as well which against a good team undoes all his good work.

He got better and better as the game went on. Very Kolo like with his beautiful left foot and wanting to attack out of defense every chance he gets. Took a few nice intercept marks. He'll definitely play senior footy this year. He's a ripper.

Great work Corkie - loving the reports

Interesting to hear if Matera got all his goals out the back or actually crumbed the ball like a normal small forward.

Also how did McKenzie Willis fair - was he noticeable?

Safe to say Matera is a definite in for round one, probably at the expense of Fiorini!
;)

A bit of both for Matera mate. A few set shots. Kicked a cracker out of the pack near the boundary from about 40mtrs in the last. He did play well, but just the usual hair pulling moments that he just can't seem to get out of his game.

Willis played well. Half back mostly. Did a lot of work linking up play. His disposal was good and he reads the play well in defence.

Just not sure how he will ever fit into our best 22 though if he keeps playing that role in the reserves? Maybe he could become our lock down small defender?

No one in footy media holds that opinion so hes probably just some intern who was forced to do a sports article. Sounds like he hasn't got much idea of whats going on.
It says he's a "chief sports columnist and associate editor with The Age" i just wanted to post it so when we have a great season we can go back and laugh at these predictions.

Matera has been a bit of a whipping boy for a while now - but in his defence he kicked 24 goals from 17 games last year to finish 3rd in our goal kicking in a team that finished near the bottom of the ladder. #justsayin

RE Willis - if you have KK, Saad, Hanley and Scrimshaw it's hard to get the spot for rebounding alone. Needs to be playing that Nick Smith shutdown role or from his highlight tape he seems to know how kick goals - maybe he could take Matera's role and a bit more defensive intensity ;)

Exactly why I think after todays NEAFL game he takes Ainsworth's place round 1 . Experience the young fellow needs to get.....Admittedly Matera has his issues but he is still the best chance of hitting the scoreboard as a small forward.

Its ironic you say "in his defence" because this is his issue, he can not lock the ball in the fwd 50 when he doesn't have the ball... Cyril Rioli is dangerous around goals but what makes him a top 10 player in the game (imo) is his attention to detail when he doesn't have the ball.. Matera looks like the fat kid in under 9's, who everyone runs round like he is a traffic cone.. Ainsworth looks like he has all the attributes Matera doesn't.. he has that old fashioned characteristic of leaving a mark on anyone he goes near.. i love that! He also has jets, spring and an uncanny knack to kick clever goals... we need to get games into him... let Matera win the goal kicking in the Neafl and then let a desperate Richmond pick him up in a trade for a third rounder at the end of the year (pick 45)..

Joyce also in direct opposition .. elite disposal and looking a round 1 starter.
Watched Mackenzie today - he tried his guts out - tackled well - got disposals but just didn't have an impact on the game. Though it was a first up effort and I'm sure he'll improve in further games....
