WALLACE QUESTIONS ESSENDON’S DYNAMICS IN 2017
Wallace says it will be interesting to see how the younger players will potentially deal with being axed, after playing plenty of football last year.

“Let’s go with the kids first up, all these kids were given opportunity last year, some of them are not going to get as much opportunity this year, because all of a sudden you’ve got ten guys coming back in that are going to take senior positons,” he said.

“How do they deal with it? How does John Worsfold deal with a player that he gave great opportunity to last year and take that opportunity away from him 12 months later?”

He also questioned what the morale of the senior players would be if they were dropped to the VFL, having already missed 12 months of footy.

“More particularly is the senior playing group and how they deal with things, and how John Worsfold deals with them? Wallace said.

“I don’t think personally that you can play them all, like for example, for me I don’t think you can fit Heath Hocking, Jobe Watson (David) Myers, (Brent) Stanton all into the midfield.

“What happens if all of a sudden, I’ll just use Heath Hocking as an example. If Heath Hocking who has been rubbed out for 12 months, who’s probably still really dirty on what actually happened to them and to himself, what happens if he’s running around playing VFL footy, when he’s missed 12 months of football and then has an expectation of going back and playing senior football?

“All of a sudden he’s running around at VFL level, or that’s Brent Stanton doing the same thing, because they decide that we need to play Darcy Parish, young Orazio Fantatsia and Andy McGrath.”

Hope someone on here attended the game.

Im not sure what to think of Walla playing forward i think dynamic line breaking speed off half back is important these days ie:having a johannisen and ability to not let the opposition set up behind you through fast transition. I know we have an over abundance of medium/small defenders though.

But i also like the 'Mosquito fleet small forward idea aswell' i wouldve thought Colyer would be the 3rd - not green but play a higher half forward role.

Seems Mitch Brown is on the outer

Shame about Hooker, Hartley and Joey at the moment. Need those guys fit and ready to fire.

It's a bit early for Brown to be on the outer. If the updates on the website are anything to go by Brown has been training in defence for the pre-season. If he played forward on Saturday I'd say it's because Daniher, Hooker, Bellchambers and even Draper were all unavailable for the match.

Fair comment, if you assume no one talked to each other between January last year and this morning. I'm pretty sure they all know where they stand though; whenever they're interviewed they talk about the development of the youth and how tough selection is going to be this year.

It is absolutely a fair comment and something that would have been made if the media wasn't engaged in its perpetual circle-jerk.

He has, and I'd be surprised if he wasn't at least in the conversation for playing the third tall defender next year.

Also I'm pretty sure I read or heard somewhere that Howlett (for example) was told if he came back he'd be mostly playing VFL this year, so I am presuming the club was very honest with the returning players and I would think that would filter to the younger players as well.

Wallace talks like it's the 1980's still.

Those guys getting an opportunity last year knew they were getting it because of the suspensions, but they were given an opportunity that players at other clubs would wait up to 2-3 years for.

If they're dropped to the VFL, they'll know they've got work to do.

It's the same situation at any successful clubs, good players miss out. It's the ideal situation to be in from a performance point of view. If we've got AFL quality players sitting in the VFL, it probably means we're doing well and if they're any good, they'll either break back into our team or be picked up by another club who have also had the chance to have a look at them.

Our young players are very lucky and very well placed for successful careers. Guys in the VFL at other clubs would have been jealous last year.

Healthy Competition in an elite sporting side is one ingredient for success. You want the guys who don't make it to want it, you want the guys who do make it to be busting their asses to hold their spot.

The key is healthy and by all reports everyone is on the same page as to where they are at. I trust John to be honest and upfront with all players.

Some information from training today, many have commented on Heppel's speed which seems to have improved, he looks to be spending more time forward in match simulation aswell.

Green has impressed with his work ethic looking a lot fitter and keener. Joe managed to do some ball work, seems to be starting to build his training load to get ready for 1 or 2 pre-season games.

Howlett and Colyer did a lot of goalkicking I can see Howlett being used more forward this year. Tippa also the fittest he has ever been with his skills on show again. He will have a good year as a small forward this year I reckon I expect 25+ goals.

I remember reading that too, I think Stanton might also have said something in a radio interview at the end of last year that corroborates it (not about Howlett, but about his own chances of selection).

What puppy fat? One of two thing will happen with Green, kick a truck load of goals, or pile up the kilos.

If this is the Josh Green that's going to turn up to training week in week out I'll happily get on board.
It looks like he has worked very hard over the summer and I congratulate his work ethic. Amazing transformation.

My oath it is. I reckon with his ethics he'll be right up there with the selectors. I am so excited for this season. With the worst back line, midfield and forward line we will push into the top 6 teams and stick it up everything afl

My guess is that Wallace has no idea about the integrity both Hocking and Stanton have. To suggest they'd crack the sads because somebody has earned their spot on merit is a slight on their character. Maybe you could question a young bloke with known attitude problems but to use these two club stalwarts as examples is a bloody poor summation from a supposed expert analyst. I think Stants and Buddha are quality blokes with genuine integrity and respect from their peers. They'd be the last blokes on our list to kick up a fuss to the detriment of the team dynamic.

What an utter ********.

Yes but instead of Ambrose to just fill that spot for a target option.

I'd like the following lineup:

B: Baguley (lock down on best small forward role), Hartley (taking primary full forward), Francis (taking 3rd forward)
HB: Kelly, Hurley (taking 2nd KF potentially allowing some rebound), McGrath (the line breaker)

Francis could line up forward meaning Ambrose or Dea take that spot but I prefer Francis as he also offers some rebound like a boss.

The Kelly spot I suspect will rotate with him and others occasionally resting and I expect to see Stanton, Goddard, Gleeson, Tippa, Heppell, Hocking, McKenna, Myers spend some time there during the season. Morgan also a chance if his form warrants it.

I think thats my back 6 aswell

It seems the coaching panel prefer Ambrose over Francis for that 3rd tall role.

Agree. Everyone who came back knew that things would be different as far as the pecking order goes. Everyone of the players interviewed since being back have stated they need to be more flexible and prepared to play in other spots. However everyone is getting a fair shot. The way Wallet describes it seems to be saying some where never going to be in the picture.
Hocking is on the fringe but i think he has used a poor example. If Heath has to play VFL he will play VFL and give it exactly the same as he would playing AFL.
The only thing he has correct is the 4 mentioned can not be in the middle at the same time. Not that they may all not be on the ground at the same time.

Some blokes will miss out but i fail to see how that is any different to say Collingwood who have traded players in, or Hawthorn who have traded players in and out or anyone for that matter. All clubs will have players in the VFL who feel they should be in the AFL. It happens every year. Yes our circumstance is a little different but at the end of the day it will be no different. The blokes who play this year will be the ones who want to buy into the team and the game plan and you can take that to the bank ! The ones who do not can please themselves.

Word of warning for those pumping Francis as a certain starter. They will still take their time with him. IMO he has a massive future and he has had a much better pre season this year but they are still building up his fitness base and running while trying not to blow up his legs. I suspect he may start out in the VFL at FF/CHF if Joe and Hooks are ready for round 1. Possibly play 3 or 4 rounds to see how his form is going.
He will improve this year but he still may be a bit short of being a lock for round 1.

Until we see some form in the pre-season games I agree he shouldn't be a certain starter. As much as I'd love him in he needs to show he is ready to go
