Thanks for the training reports, training reporters. Great to hear Ape back with the main group, I think our forward line could actually resemble something of a functional forward line this year!!! Now's the time to start to get excited as a supporter base. Our squad are coming into the period where they've had a few preseasons under their belts, played 20 - 50 games and are coming into their prime, next will be consistency. The best part is they're around the same age (development wise) and hopefully can bring us success for the next 5 - 8 years.
The only real issue is do we have the depth to cover injury. loss of form, retirement of our older players?
On paper it appears so, but the reality is that Johhno, Dawson, Sandi, Balla, Pearce, still have a huge part to play
this year.
How they are managed, and our contingency plans. development will have a huge say on our future.

Yea I tend to agree, however, I see these players (except for Sandi) as being the depth players going forward. Hamling/A. Pearce/Collins/Logue start ahead of Johnno and Dawson, Walters ahead of Ballantyne and the Hill brothers, Langdon, Weller and Tucker ahead of Pearce.

Just for clarity, which Pearce are you talking about?

Very light at this stage.
I suspect the aim for him will be to slowly build and be ready for the last preseason game for fremantle. Then maybe a Wafl game on the 18th or half a game and if he gets through that ready for round 1 on the 26th.

Id be peeved about your preseason fixture. Play on the 4th and then the 10th which is when teams like to get their best players playing and they wont be able to with the quick turn around.

I suspect a fairly strong squad will be travelling to Geraldton then most rested for 2nd round and then best 25 for round 3 (10th) including Harley for half-3 qtr game. Full game if ok for Peel on 18th and then round 1 AFL on the 26th would be a good lead up with good 8 day breaks.

Just went for a short time , didn't see, Sandi and Darcy , and most of the first year players,

1) Apeness ,mundy, ibbo ,Dawson continue to run laps and doing different program .
2) jonno and Brady in the main group
3) low key session before I went off ( not sure about what happen after 10 am) other training watchers might be able to help out if simulation match is on.
4) Collins continue to match up on Tab most of the time .

Edit : spurr replacing Dawson .

What work is Bennell doing?
After the main session he was doing very slow repeat 100's. For what it is worth the bloke I was sitting next to know's Harley's family and they had a quick chat. Harley said he was 6 - 8 weeks away from returning. Not sure if he meant six to eight weeks away from being able to play or six to eight weeks away from joining in the main training. I think it was the latter. Will do a full training report later today.

Just to add on , in one passages of play moving from backline to forward suban kick brilliantly to Tab . if he do it in afl consistently that will be good. I do agree with someone( I forgot who) mention that suban is not a blocker , more of a flanker .

Suban strength:
1) left foot kick
2) do have a burst of speed
3) can kick 50m goal
4) Afl and Wafl GF experience.

Weakness:
1) decision making
2) overdo thing that show his weakness ( eg try to burst himself out of congestion all the time without assesses other option like a handpass)
3) not much of improvement from him since 2013.

Dropped in for a couple of minutes and saw a bit of a 5 or 6 a side drill with in close work. Lots of talk from the players about avoiding turnovers. Fyfe was on the same team as Steven Hill and some of the work between those two was sublime. Watch out during the season for the Fyfe, S Hill and B Hill combinations leading to penetrating inside and outside running. There was a lot of focus on accurate short passing as well.

First time I have seen Apeness in real life. He is one big unit.

Genuinely shocked and excited about this. Mobility seems to be Collins weakness and Taberner's strength, while strength seems to be Collins strength and Taberner's weakness.

Hopefully it is great for both of them.

Strengths
- elite left foot kick

Weaknesses
- gets 2 kicks a game

Agree You sum it up, when Tab get space he beat Collins or else one on one Collins win it most of the time in training . Hopefully one day the tides change and improvement from both players are on the way to fix on their weakness .

There were plenty missing in the main group. All first year players were absent. Neale was nowhere to be seen, Zac Clarke, Griffin and Dawson didn’t train at all outside but spent time in the gym. While Bennell, A.Pearce and Hamling were in the gym and then completed running drills after the main session. Ueber jogged laps slowly and Sandy worked out in the gym the whole session.

Spurr, Ibbo, Mundy and Apeness also didn’t take part in all the drills. Those four players ran a race 3km around the oval with Spurr first by a significant margin, Ibbo second and a fairly impressive Apeness running third. Mundy’s fitness has never been terrific, but he was miles behind Apeness (more than 60metres) in fourth place. To me Michael looks fit and strong compared to last year. Interestingly Fyfe was loudly encouraging Mundy in the last 100 metres of his race.

Some things to note in the match sims included Weller playing exclusively as a defender and looking awesome in the role. He did a chase down of Ballaz that showed truly elite pace.

Brad Hill was just incredibly impressive. There were a couple of transitions of the football involving B.Hill that just made me think he will be an outstanding recruit. His pace will also be a major asset defensively. He did a run down of Crozier where Hayden looked stunned that Brad was able to cover ground as quickly as he did.

The combination of S.Hill and Fyfe was outstanding in match sim play with Fyfe pushing forward of the ball and outmarking Blakely on a regular basis.

Sutcliffe also deserves mention as looking in ripping condition and TTHD. He spent times in match sims as a midfielder and as a loose man behind the ball. Johnson switched in the loose player role too. Ed Langdon also spent time playing as a defender as well.

Nyhuis is another who is training fantastically. Looks really quick when defending players on the lead. His kicking is excellent.

Another point of note was how well McCarthy and Kersten combined playing forward. Both are super quick on the lead and McCarthy jus looks like an absolute gun. His kicking again was a massive feature of his play. Today he was also providing a ton of tips to the forwards in match sims. Like a taller Walters. He seems truly well liked already by the playing group.

In the recovery group both A.Pearce and Hamling seemed to be running at full pace. I don't think either would be far away from returning. Hailing may just be doing some extra strength and conditions work as he looks stronger than when I saw him trying before the Christmas break. Alex Pearce has put on a significant amount of muscle since his injury.

Today was an excellent session in my view. The kicking into the forwad fifty was a ton better than training this time a year ago.

I'm liking the utilisation of Weller down back, I can see him become the next Heath Shaw sans the raving lunatic attitude.

I thought Crozier did well down there also but his ceiling probably not as high as Weller.
Agree the weller part , but why not play both one on the right the other on the left ? Croz aerial marking is better than weller , but weller is well ahead on other skill.

Common theme from the preseason reports thus far:

Fyfe -> S. Hill -> Cam

B. Hill running the ball up the wing -> Cam

D. Pearce and Suban training the house down trying to shake the scapegoat tags for 2017
It gets you excited that's for sure.
I'm glad to read that Cam is going well I must admit I was a bit worried how he would go.

Valid point. Only hesitation would be needing more than 4 players actually defending. I don't see Weller and Crozier as actual defenders. Maybe they could rotate from hf to hb?

Both Weller and Croz in the back half with Johnson floating between them gives us the most creative bunch of backs we've had in a while
That's been my preferred half back line for a while. So creative and the skill sets seem very complimentary of each other. Could also see Logue slotting in for MJ in the future if Croz and Weller are providing the run and kicking out of defence. Can also see Mundy rotating through a bit.

Our 2013 GF starting back line was:

Duffield Dawson Johnson
DPearce McPharlin Spurr

Hoping Hamling > Dawson, Weller > DPearce and Crozier >= Duffield (no pressure). APearce/Collins with massive shoes filling McPharlin's loss though. But seems like we have so many more options to try than we had last year (eg Ibbo, Luke Ryan, Hughes, Nyhuis, Ueber...). Great to hear Sheridan and Sutcliffe seemed destined to play further up field in 2017.

Great report Sherrif.

Couple of things you mentioned that I haven't seen so far.
Firstly it's good to hear that McCarthy seems well liked by the group. (Better to be Tully liked than Stark, but don't trust the Freys ). I had not seen any sign of the "sunshine" personality that GWS talked about - just a professional hard worker.

Secondly, I think that Hamling has been in the main group since he got here. I hope he wasn't in rehab with Pearce.

I don't think Hamling is in rehab, but doing extra work in the gym and then doing his running with the rehab group. He looks at full fitness. McCarthy was giving heaps of advice today. Mostly to do with kicking for goal and passing. I hope the players took on his advice as his kicking that I have seen is superb.
