Victoria
AFL Club
Essendon
Other Teams
Bayern, Milan, Boston Celtics
1) Carlton
Turned Gibbs into Pick 10, Kennedy, 30 & a future 2nd
Gives them another strong draft hand and some ammo for next years trade/draft period
Lang & Lobbe for peanuts.

2) Essendon
2017 1st, 2nd, 2018 3rd and 2018 2nd round downgrade for Stringer, Saad & Smith.
3 Best 22 players coming in at the cost of a shallow draft write off.
Keeping their 2018 1st and Francis was impressive.

3) Port
Rockliff gives them another elite midfielder.
Watts is quality and he came cheap.
Motlop as a freebie that barely impacts them via FA.
Both frustrating players at time, but their skill is unquestionable.

4) Freo
Pick 2 for Weller. Wilson in.
And held pick 5.

5) Dogs
For all the hullaballoo around losing Stringer, they turned it into a good hand to add Schache and another 1st rd pick.
Trengove and Crozier add to their dwindling KP stocks.
Not a bad effort in the end.

6) Adelaide
Got a great deal on Lever
Then blew it on a 29yo in Gibbs.
Balanced that out by getting Pick 12 for Cameron.

7) Dees
Got themselves Lever and Balic
Wrote off 2 more 1st rounds but the list is good enough to absorb

8) Gold Coast
Weller is a proven talent who wants to play for them
Pick 2 is a huge cost, but given his upside, age and the unknown that comes with a kid going to QLD at the moment, this is a good deal for them.
Pick 2 was also the same value Adelaide gave up for Gibbs in the end. so i can't judge them too harshly.
Aaron Young comes in cheap as a best 22 player too.
Rate Wigg as well.

On paper who would you have as the 3 biggest winners and 3 biggest losers out of the 2017 trade period and why?

for me
Winners
1) Essendon: Identified 3 players they wanted and brought them all in. From all reports the haggling on prices were all on the other sides of the Stringer trade and have strengthened their list while also holding on to Francis.

2) Fremantle: Although I rate Weller and think he will be a gun, to get pick 2 for a homesick player who is still relatively unproven is an absolute steal. One of the most surprising trades I can remember

3) Carlton: Got a great return on Gibbs and although they lost their 2018 2nd they now have two picks in that round going into next year. Strengthened their on-ball division with the addition of Kennedy and now have another top 10 pick.

Losers:
1) Gold Coast: Giving up a prized pick 2 for Weller is a massive overpay. Their Ablett result was satisfactory and Young provides them with some zip, but a horrible finish for them.

2) Brisbane: Overpaid big time for Cameron, hit the panic button when they could have got him much cheaper in 12 months. Also the Schache trade is just strange, granted there may be more than meets the public eye here.

3) Collingwood: Added next to nothing and traded their second round pick in 2018 for a kid who has never played a game. Mind boggling stuff.

Winners: Essendon, Carlton, Fremantle

Break Even (with cards to play): Adelaide, Melbourne (got their man, but paid full price)

Losers: Bulldogs (though bounce back well if Schache performs), Suns (over paid but probably had to)

Hey Big Spender: Port (living in the now obviously).

Break Even (with not much to play with): WCE

#30, not #40.

Agree Collingwood are MASSIVE LOSERS. We gone Backwards with the Murray Trade

Winners: Carlton, Essendon, Fremantle, Port Adelaide.

Average: WBD (Schache saves them from losers), WCE (if bottom 6 next year than move to losers as don't have first rd pick), Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Geelong.

Losers: GCS (mostly due to that pick 2 trade).

Didn't really do anything (Minor pick trades, minor players or just nothing): Collingwood, Sydney, GWS, Saint Kilda, North Melbourne, Richmond, Hawthorn.

Come on... I know we did bad and should be ranked 17th, but the Suns were worse than even us.
Lachie Weller is a gun.
Added some decent players too.
Pies gave up what could be a top 25 pick in a deep, talented draft for an unknown.

can't rank you ahead of Gold Coast....even if they did trade Pick 2

Well you can't but I can.

Gold Coast clearly the worst. Pies 17th.
Nah. Yeah they paid overs for Weller but the fact they attracted talent to the club was a massive win.

That deal for the WC 2018 first was also seriously ugly, IMO. We screwed the pooch on the Murray deal, but GC took out the wooden spoon on this trade period.

Weller is tracking nicely as a high potential player.
3 years in, has played 22 games the last 2 seasons (note, a kid in a Ross Lyon team playing 2 full seasons)
He wants to stay there
Pick 2 is questionable in terms of whether they come on, let alone stay (see Schache walking out on Brisbane)

That deal looks over at face value, but it makes sense.

Eh, I disagree.

Essendon did very well, but the good work was getting the players to nominate us in the first place.
Port really cashed in on F/A. Strengthened their side dramatically for little cost.
Carlton cleaned up on every deal they made. SOS went full God-mode there in the last 24 hours.
For all the crap he's copped re: his time @ GWS, he has done very well when he had the opposite to deal with at Carlton.

They've gone from drafting Boekhorst/DVR and trading for GWS discards, to landing decent players like Marchbank, Pickett and Kennedy, and strengthening their draft hand and using it well on the likes of SPS, Cunningham, Curnow, McKay, Weitering.
3 & 10 in this draft is impressive.
If they score either of Cerra or Rayner @ 3, they're going to be a scary prospect in a few years.
