Draft Review 2017 - Revisit the 2017 AFL draft

I was kidding with that initial part.

O'Brien is the best kick in the draft though and his athletic profile is top notch. A Gaff/Scully type would be terrific for our midfield.
Good fit and a good get. I'm tired and missed the tongue in cheek. But rage is playing a Malcolm young special so no bed for me

O'Brien, SPS and fisher outside. Curnow getting in there

For once, I'm liking what the blues are cooking
It's still a good 3-4 years away, but it's looking dynasty-esque

I wasn't a fan and still not on taking such a risk on Stephenson but Hine and co seem to be very confident and happy with the first two boys in Stephenson and Murphy.

Here's hoping he got this one right.
Murphy is good.
Stephenson can be but I'm staggered the pies went a utility type with so many list holes.
Naughton looked a wiser pick.

I know you guys are delirious right now, but I feel Brayshaw and Cerra complement our current & future midfield rotation more than LDU would've, much as I like him. We already have similar types in Fyfe/Neale/Blakely in there, we needed a bit of polish which is something you can't really say LDU has at this stage. There's also a little factor called retention, something you Vics just aren't as appreciative of; AB is the obvious pick from that angle. lots of water yet to go under the bridge but I think both clubs will be happy with their picks in the long run, all trolling aside ;)

also i don't understand why you aren't more thankful towards GC, without whom this never would have been possible

Yeah the makeup of the draft appears to have been massively influenced by "go home" factor.

I think Dow and LDU were ruled out early because of it. And both appear to have been ruled out at 2 by Freo.

But Freo effectively got Cerra at 5 (best available at that pick other than Stephenson IMO) and Brayshaw for Weller, which is a great deal.

These threads are always so dumb.

Have some gems from the 2011 thread to temper that raging optimism a bit:

With Clarke, Witts and Paine, Collingwood picked up 3 players who will all be 200 gamers in the future.

Derek Hine does it again.:thumbsu:

Genius.
I thought West Coast and Essendon came out trumps.

Quentin Lynch won't be around forever so to bring in McInnes is handy especially after Wilson stalled this year and Newman will definitely add another dimension to their midfield in the future. Essendon potentially filled gaps in the midfield with Kavanagh and Jackson Merrett.
Ellis
Elton
Arnot

Seem to be good quality picks and then you add in the 2 players we traded for in

Morris
Maric

And potentially adding Macarthy through the PSD and I would say that we are lookin like one of the better performed clubs throughout this Trading/Drafting period.
Daniel Markworth (35) - Bargain pick at 35 considering a lot of media thought he was a top 15-20 pick. This bloke has x-factor written all over him. He's incredibly quick and evasive with good skills and he is a good size. Without bias I would say along with the Cats picking Kersten at 34 and the Pies picking Pain at 50, this is the best bargain pick of the draft. A lot of Steve Johnson about him.
From what ive read and seen, the cats drafting Kersten makes them instant winners...
Crows: Kerridge and Grigg will be fantastic for them! Can't see them losing too many centre clearances in the future with thompson, sloane, vince, grigg and kerridge

Love your drafting.
Steals and late pick gems. And all fill needs.
Your forward line is well stocked now. CCJ and Miller are great pickups.

Higgins - pure class.
Balta - Gun.
Naish is a nice little pickup too
yep... should be interesting to see if a foward line with 5 smalls in it can dominate, or come unstuck... likewise whether character traits that scared other clubs off will become an issue

This takes the cake IMO

Carlton backed themselves in and picked the player they wanted most, 21-year-old Blaine Boekhorst from Swan Districts, at pick 19. The Blues' decision was the talk of the night, given the junior talent still available at that point. It was a gutsy call – Boekhorst would likely have made it to their second pick at 28 – but they picked Dillon Viojo-Rainbow there for a pretty good price, so got two players they really liked rather than risk missing one. What's interesting and what can only be assessed in time is how the Blues' decision to slide from pick 7 to pick 19 during the trade period plays out. Whether the club rated Peter Wright, who knows, but he was the key forward they would have had access to had they not opted instead for Kristian Jaksch, Mark Whiley and Boekhorst, who will bring the sort of run they need. Clem Smith was a steal at pick 60, and and Jayden Foster kicked more goals than anyone in the TAC Cup this year.

believe me i do

you just dont like hearing the harsh reality. when have i ever been wrong?

i got smashed on here in 2015 by the purple haze by trying to tell their fans their teams performance wasnt as good as they thought it was and there were very serious issues facing that side if they didnt re-adjust then. i was abused. i was even told they were statistically the most dominant side of all time at the same point of the season. turned out i was right. fell off the cliff. didnt even make a grand final.

i got smashed telling people weller never wanted to be at freo and was disappointed with the draft outcome. i know for a fact he was massively homesick before a decent freo contract renewal hit his manager. ended up leaving.

cerra is the same as well, similar to balic. brayshaw less so. brayshaw probably stays but cerra is a massive flight risk.
Massive tiger fan Cerra, heard him talk about watching his beloved tigers in the gf, we can wait a couple of years...

As much as I hate to say it, because I'm already sick of Richmond supporters, but they did pretty well in getting pretty much exactly what they needed later and still managed to get the best player available to them at pick 17. Higgins will keep Butter Fingers Castagna out of the 22 which is great.

Honestly think West Coast shit themself when Geelong took Kelly and panicked into Ryan early.

Many of us thought that too but for the past week or so he's been linked to us at that pick, so maybe not. But I think we could have got him later, definitely a risky pick for a interstate club, it's just as risky for us IMO. This is more of a rebuild draft, starting with KPP's and Petrucelle who will take longer to develop. And by the sounds of it we can add O.Allen to the list of these hybrid Tall Foward/ Mids.

Yep. Even Free agency and he wont cost us.

See you soon Cerra and thanks freo for the development.

You do realize the majority of kids who are into their footy follow either Richmond or Collingwood. Doesn't mean much or you'd have had Hodge and Fyfe running around for you, and Dusty would be at the saints.

I’d like Beast Mathieson to provide his insights into Collingwood supposedly drafting on hype at 6 only for said player to then be there at 39. campbell023 that would have us as big winners wouldn’t it?

I liked Geelong’s draft the most in terms of where the club is right now, but like us they didn’t get that KPF they needed so I’m not so sure for the long term and Fremantle’s for the future.
