Does Naughton have any real competition for 1 at this stage?
Only knock on him really is his kicking. Far too wayward. But even a 25% improvement and he's an elite KPP at both ends.

Problem with that is that he’s just a very very ordinary kick of the football in general and has been since before he was drafted (it would be by far the main reason he wasn’t picked higher, in what was a “nothing special” top end) and significantly improving your kicking is one of the least likely things to happen.

It’s probably also one of the key reasons they moved him forward from defence after that first year. Having terrible field kicks in your back half is asking for trouble.

It would also be one of the main reasons we moved Josh Bruce forward after initially getting him across to play key back. He was a liability by foot back there with his awful field-kicking.

Specifically, his kicking for goal. Field kicking is an issue for a lot of KPFs, but Naughton would have legitimately cost himself a good 15 or so goals last year by missing simple shots that guys like McKay, Brown, Buddy, etc would slot with their eyes closed. I lost count of how many he missed from maybe 30m out straight in front

If he hasn't done so already, I'm looking for Tom McCartin to hit top 10.

Just a remarkable player in the backline.

Him, Starcevich and De Koning to be my 3 risers and Kelly and Stephenson my 2 sliders.

Sam Taylor and Zac Bailey to solidify their spots.

I know you're obsessed with Balta but he's nowhere near Naughton. Naughton is head and shoulders the best player in this draft with Brayshaw the only potential challenger
Brayshaw second in coaches votes most key stats are elite
Number 1 ranked player in the league by some statistic metrics.
Even at low scoring anchors he has two more score involvements then naughton.
Naughton averaging 2 goals ten disposals this year.
Lobb and grabner put those numbers up.
I’m not so sure in head and shoulders

1. Brayshaw
2. Naughton
3. Cerra
4. Taylor
5. Balta
6. Kelly
7. Ryan
8. Bailey
9. Allen
10. Ballard
11. Starcevich
12. Petty
13. Fritsch
14. T.McCartin
15. Worpel
16. LDU
17. Moore
18. Higgins
19. Stephenson
20. Spargo

Its true that Naughton has shown more, but I think you are discounting Balta as KPD in flag winning team.

Some may say, what Naughton has done as forward, Balta has done just as much as a defender.

IMHO forwards have to be rated higher than defenders, all else being equal, that's why ATM Naughton gets the nod

Lets see how Balta goes as a forward for the rest of the year, so far in 2022, its closer than you think.

Balta has more goals and more marks, and more contested marks than Naughton so far in 2022

Naughton came 3rd in our B&F in defence in his 1st year. He is a better defender.

Naughton kicked 40 goals last season Balta kicked 2.

Fletcher Roberts was a KPD in a flag winning team doesn't make him any good.

We are 3 games into the season and he has .3 more marks and .7 more contested thats not a lot.

Ballard ahead of Fritsch is interesting, to say the least

And both ahead of McCartin is perplexing.

Also, Petty ahead of Worpel.

WTF!?

Finally, Bailey's only gonna keep rising.

I’m definitely not disputing Naughton is better or even debating, but this is Balta’s first year as a forward so pointing out he only kicked 2 goals last year doesn’t mean anything.

Balta did finish 8th in our BnF in our flag year 2020 as a back man though

Starcevich is a bit underrated I feel. Rarely beaten in the backline. There's been some talk on the Lions board of moving him into the midfield

If he's made the backline his playing home, why move?

I think the talk of him moving to the midfield will be put to bed with the improvement from Rayner, Bailey and Cockatoo spending more time in the middle, looks like we'll get a couple more mids in this years draft so I think Starc will continue to develop into a gun half-back.

That's the general consensus on the Lions board.

And my thought too.

If a player is found to be a good fit in a spot, keep that player there.

Brayshaw/Naughton are clear 1 and 2. I'd probably take Brayshaw for his consistency.

1. Brayshaw
2. Naughton
3. Bailey
4. Cerra
5. Allen
6. Fritsch
7. T. Kelly
8. Taylor
9. Dy. Moore
10. Ryan

Rucks don't peak until later but like Xerri/Meek to be around top 10. Balta's off an ACL in a new role but could probably challenge top 5. Think Moore will be AA this year
