Draft Review 2017 - Revisit the 2017 AFL draft

I don't know who won and lost.

What surprised me was Richmond seem to be recruiting specifically for the modern game.

If this small forward philosophy doesn't get found out, we are well-placed for sustained success! There are 6 good ones on our list now:

Rioli (Pick 12), Higgins (Pick 17), Bolton (Pick 26), Stengle (rookie), Castagna (rising star nom), Butler (rising star nom)

Collingwood had Murphy ranked 6 (Stephenson @ 2, LDU @ 7 FWIW) so for them to get Murphy later on as well, they would be ecstatic internally (well, they are).

The question is though whether those players should have been rated that high in the first place...seems to be out of line with what other clubs thought of them.

Rogers/Hughes were happy with lots of their picks wondering how they kept getting players they rated really highly at lowly picks...well it's because their judgement of talent sucked.

Agree that Cerra looked noticably disappointed. Good chance he'll be at North, Carlton or Hawthorn in 2 years time imo

I missed the beginning of the draft so I went back and watched Cerra's 'bad' reaction. I also saw his promotional video shots that he had done before the draft. His facial expression looked the same to me. Seems to be a laid back kind of kid to be honest.

Stephenson 'looked' more disappointed than Cerra. Go watch the draft again and imagine that Stephenson just had his name called out for Freo.

I'm not saying he was but I'm loving the body language experts.

Moore Down Back for me is Wasting our Talent and I don't want Cox as our Main Target
Moore's athleticism and run is much better suited to defensive 50 in my opinion. When he played across half-back this year he intercepted everything that came his way. I think he'd be one of the comp's best defenders if he were played there permanently.

What does carlton not having any mids in AA contention have to do with us potentially vastly improving our midfield this draft? How did we lose taking dow who was regarded as a top1 pick by some? What's knocks do you have on Obrien who was rated as the best kick in the draft?
I never said anything about Carlton not having "AA contention mids". In the last post he said Carlton "supercharged" there midfield which I said was a load of crap. It can't be a "supercharged" midfield when they haven't even got a midfielder receiving All Australian honours. No dought Carlton mid has potential. But you can't even close call it supercharged that's just a bias and cocky comment. I wouldn't say Dow was a bad pick but I think Carlton could've made a better pick. this is the same case for obrien. He was picked way to high. De Konning simply doesn't make sinse as they already have Matthew kruzer, Andrew Philips, and matthew Lobbe. De Koning was also to high. Shumaker was a bit of a nothing pick and jarrod Garlett is just obviously high risk high reward. I'm not saying Carlton did ultra bad, but considering there draft picks they should've done a lot better there fore, you ceartinly can't call them winners.

I'm not saying Carlton did ultra bad, but we still managed to draft 5 hall of famers with 5 picks.

It's guaranteed, I can project these kids 15 years into the future.

You did well with Josh Kennedy back in the day so I wouldn't discount it.

I didn't see it but according to some on the lions board Dow didn't look happy about going to Carlton instead of North. IMO it means nothing.

From what i saw re body language:

Stephenson was overwhelmed that a Club held faith with him so high. Was a great natural reaction from a normally outgoing personality. Loved it.

LDU and Dow were rapt to stay in Victoria.

Brayshaw was ecstatic to beat out Angus lol...and be at Freo.

Cerra's gf(i presume) next to him looked underwhelmed.

Rayner was happy as a pig in shit. Very carefree happy lad.

They have the weakest key tall department in the league though. They need a FF, CHB and FB for the future. They only have a CHF in Moore.
Moore did so well this year at CHF they'll be moving him to CHB. I can only assume so Cox gets a run at it as a key forward
Moore Down Back for me is Wasting our Talent and I don't want Cox as our Main Target
The pies forward structure is a complete mess with their list. Moore needs to play fwd not in defence, Cox needs to be the backup ruck not a key forward and Reid is only a short term solution, Elliot and Stephenson are good medium making targets but there are zero pressure forwards of note on the list. How they passed up on Dylan Moore in this draft is beyond me.

That's not an opinion that's just a dumb bias comment

As are many comments at this early stage. My point is it is hypocritical to say one poster can't say something, then go and post your own unproven opinion in response.

Perhaps it just shows how even the draft was and every one had their own thoughts that impacted some going earlier or later and vice versa.

Also, Hine is not Rogers orHughes.

In the last 10 years, he's one of only 6 list managers to have assembled a premiership team. He isn't too bad at this thing called "drafting".

I wouldn't say 'supercharged' either, but it is certainly a midfield with plenty of youth and energy.

Rotating between Cripps, Kennedy, Lang, SPS, Fisher, Dow, Cuningham, O'Brien (the last two seem to play better in open space). That is a very raw midfield. One with lots of potential. Of course they all won't make it, but there is no denying that it's taking shape.

I wouldn't say Dow was a bad pick but I think Carlton could've made a better pick. this is the same case for obrien. He was picked way to high.

O'Brien maybe, but then again he most likely wouldn't have been there at 30. Dow on the other hand was exactly what we were needing.

De Konning simply doesn't make sinse as they already have Matthew kruzer, Andrew Philips, and matthew Lobbe. De Koning was also to high.

At first I was skeptical, but thinking about it again, it was a bloody great move. Kreuzer and Lobbe are ageing. Phillips is injury-prone and has quite a few deficiencies.

Shumaker was a bit of a nothing pick

Another midfielder. Gets a lot of the ball. Lifelong Carlton supporter. Definitely not a 'nothing' pick.

LOW risk, HIGH reward. What is it we are risking exactly? If it fails, so be it. We got him at pick 78 when every other club finished up. And he is only 21.

Overall it might not seem like an 'extremely fantastic' trade period for us (Nothing will beat our 2015 draft period yet). But SOS hasn't put a foot wrong so far. We got what we were after and are happy about it.

That's fair to degree but they could've don't loads better

All clubs would be quite happy...

I like the hauls of: Geelong, WC Eagles, Richmond & Carlton

Saints did okay too

You might say those teams got a Perry good haul of players

Huh

HUH
