Draft Review 2017 - Revisit the 2017 AFL draft

Underrated but foot soldier not star. Plenty of effort/heart which is something I’d like some of our others to demonstrate. Has polled coaches votes now, not sure how he goes on player ratings though

Am not disagreeing with you at all. In fact, I am very much in agreeance. He should be on current exposed form be considered in the top 20.

Champion data (imho) is a reasonably measurement of a players impact on a game. It takes into account all facets of a players input and not just his stat peddling. Shiel (130 CD ranking points) was higher than Merret (114) on Saturday night despite Zac having more of the ball.

I like it. Will never be as black and white as many want, (myself included) but it is a great indication of the impact a player has had on the game.
Comparing two midfielders who have both recently played 40 games as established players is about as reasonable of a comparison as you can make with that metric.

But a broken (analogue) clock is right twice a day too. That doesn't make it a good measure of the time that has elapsed.

Was in regards to the dick measuring by two posters about the rising stars this year. IMHO, it's a reasonable metric to compare even two youngsters. Obviously unfair on a seasoned gun to a youngster but it will indicate how far off said youngster is off the compared players ceiling.

Hang on, Rising Star? No one has mentioned the Rising Star since page 83, May 11th.

It's also unfair to compare an injured player with an uninjured one, a player with a full 27 games of experience to one with less experience, a player who is more developed in his body to one who isn't, or to compare players who play in different positions. At least if you're talking about ranking 2017's draftees.

If you're purely talking about the Rising Star then sure, go for it. The brownlow is just as biased as the player ratings, so why not the Rising Star? It's a media personality judged award anyway, they probably stare at those stats more than anything else when making a decision.

Other than the eye test, which is completely subjective, what stat do you want to use if not afl player ratings ?

How many coaches votes in 2019 or how many times was he in the best players for the Tigers?

When those players were drafted is completely irrelevant to my point, which was that the official player ratings are significantly flawed, and should not be relied upon to judge a players value, or ‘how good’ they are compared to others. Putting Baker in the top 10 because ‘player ratings’ is flawed.
Last year, Mitch Wallis was ranked by player ratings as Elite in the mid-forward category, despite missing a portion of the season due to being dropped to the twos for poor form. His second half of the year was outstanding, but not enough to establish him as Elite. Player ratings are laughably flawed

Don’t those rankings exclude anyone from Bakers draft who’s ineligible for the RS this year? You’re essentially listing the standing of a second year player vs new draftees...

What does rising star have to do with this draft? All the best players aren't eligible due to having played more than 10 games in 2018.

All these ratings are relative and offical AFL ratings

And Baker up to Round 8, this year, was rated 31 in the league. He has had a massive season so far and would be in the top 4 in our best and fairest
No, he wouldn't. For a start, he's only played 6 of 9 games, and B&Fs favour those who play every week. He'd be borderline top 15.

Top 4 would be something like Edwards, Grimes, Prestia, McIntosh. Stack, Houli, Vlastuin, Martin, Lynch, Ellis, Lambert, Nankervis all ahead of him too. Probably Higgins, because he's played every game and been unobtrusively good.

Baker is a beauty, though, and you're right about Balta. For me, he's in the top 3 of this draft, with Naughton and Kelly, when it all shakes out.

Balta will have games when he has 25 disposals, 10 marks, 3 goals, 7 clearances, 6 tackles, 12 hitouts, 5 inside 50s, 4 running bounces and 3 goal assists. There's more than a little bit of Kouta about him.

I mean if we can pick any one that we like, top 10 for clangers is in there so I pick that

You must have missed the game mate. He kicked 1.2. While one of his points was unfortunately touched off the boot that went through. Wasn’t bad at all considering his partner up forward in Gowers did SFA.

Edit* was better than Ben Brown.
Was given a bath by Tarrant today and Brown was very good. Give the kid some more time before comparing him to the best forwards in the game.

Ben brown was no doubt better today. And no doubt currently a better player. Which is expected considering one is 19 and the other is 27. It was actually hilarious watching him get kissed on the dick by the umpires today though.

Good win from your boys today 👍.

Which of the 2 frees that he got didn’t you like? The bear hug? Trengove panicked today.

17-9. Not sure you can complain about the umps....

2 frees ? He had 3 free kicks. And all 3 were shots on goal. I’m happy to discuss footy with you mate. But at least post the correct stats.

So how many of the 3 weren’t frees?
If you asked every other key forward in the league, they’d probably say all of them. It’s interesting how Ben Brown gets them though.

Congrats again on the win. Your club is definitely going in the right direction. Goldstein and Higgins were superb. The future is bright.

Ask every backmen - wrap two arms around a forward and it will be a free every time. Trengove should get a copy of the game and watch how Tarrant goes about it.

Pretty sure he would rather take advice from his teammate in dale Morris. He’s actually made an All Australian team and won a flag. And Tarrant gets away with it because he doesn’t have to play against Ben Brown.

Congrats on the win. Surely you’re not this insecure that you’re spending your entire night defending Ben Brown after you get your second win of the year and your coach steps down. Surely you’ve got better things to discuss?
This is the 2017 threat after all. Keep it on topic. I’d be more worried about the form of LDU. Looks nothing like a top 5 pick.

He will be fine - needs to work on his tank.

Doesn’t beating the Blues count anymore?

Back on topic, is there a number before 1 that we can put Noah Balta at?

Just a lazy 16 contested possessions, 7 clearances, 6 tackles, 5 inside 50s, 3 rebound 50s, 422 metres gained. 19 years old, 196cm, 100kg. As quick as anyone in the comp. Kicks 65 metres of either leg. Freak.

And you drafted [insert spud here]. You dumb buggers.

:D
