If anyone out there still hadn't been enticed by Sandi yet, he plays 6 of the first 9 games at Domain.

Pre-season hiccup aside, he is locked as r2 for me. That extra 250k looks really nice spent elsewhere

A 30yo Stef Martin who spoke out about his concerns over the lowering of the interchange cap last year during the preseason saying he was worried how he would handle the extra load all year will not be in my starting team.
Lions are a bottom team currently so why would they make Stef ruck solo and not get games into the next generation?

Gawn/Grundy although Hickey intrigues me.

Is Gawn really a lock at R1?

645k for a ruckman who has only played 1 full season and had about 15 knee ops.

Anyone that paid the 650k for Goldy last year is surely considering starting without Gawn.

For me he is a lock

Gawn is a Gun - has done it for about 30 weeks in a row now

Solo ruck in a team that is only getting better

Particularly so for me when I'm looking at a risk / reward with sandi @ r2. Maxxxy locked

**** Ryder, he's in the never again pile for me.

God he sucked in his first season for port, thought he'd dominate.

Lobbe ring any bells ye of short memory

Ryder will do 90% of the ruck work next season, with Trengove doing 10%. Lobbe should be in the SANFL for the whole year (unless injuries to Ryder).
He won't go onto score "Gawn like numbers" but will be solid for in the 90s most weeks.
Perfect player to have in peoples forward lines IMO.

Yep liking the look of Sandi at R2 with Ryder covering in the forwards. With less DPP options up forward Ryder should be a more than suitable F6 come years end
Yeah you'd definitely need to have a decent ruck/forward as cover if you go Sandi. Ryder the perfect one. Perhaps Nankervis. At this stage I'm going Gawn and likely Goldy. Maybe Grundy. I also have Ryder currently as a forward.
My issue with Sandi is if he goes down you don't have as much money to trade him out whereas a premo like Gawn Goldy means you can go sideways.
If Sandi gets through the year playing around 18 games he'd be a great pickup.

If Sandi goes down, Ryder moves to R2 and you recruit a Fow or Mid rookie and carry some cash and hope to hang on for a week or 2 until you can raise the full amount of money to bring in the likes of Gawn or Goldy.

Yeah for sure. I don't like 400k sitting on the bench whilst trying to raise money though. Considering there's likely to be more injuries elsewhere. Also I'm going in trying to preserve trades. I just think the Sandi option will be a bad one.

Fair call.

I'm looking good to have sandi and $150k in the kitty. That way, if sandi goes down Ryder goes into the rucks and I'll have $450k to buy another fwd. If he stands up, I've got a good head start for upgrade season.

Reckon this is the right strategy for Gulliver

Still trying to get my head around peoples theories around picking Sandilands. Blokes 34 years old, missed a whole season with injury, sure it wasn't body related, legs, knees, shoulder, back ect or turf toe. I think that is why he will be in many sides. I just cant see him moving around, playing consistent games of footy and playing many interstate games. Probably why you almost NEED to pick Ryder as a cover option, but you will also need a good f7 f8 to pull it off.

Remembering some of Gawn's games this year he makes me think I'll gladly cough up the extra cash. Was huge and he'll only just have turned 25 coming into next season along with a team that by all logic should be improving. Seems a pretty damn safe bet. When I think about what Goldy is capable of and the potential points spread for North this year I think he could also be a lock.

I acually think the biggest concern as a ruckman for me is Sandi tbh. Right now I can't see him being anything other than a lock but I can't help but wonder about the advantage one might have if they spend a bit extra and it turns out Sandi has a few games around 80 and then has to be rested. Ugh. Only problem is it seems like he'll be in 50% of teams so if he does fire for a bargain price you're gonna be behind half the teams out there.

At the moment I'm looking at going Sandi R2 with Ryder F4 as cover incase Sandi tanks or gets rested/injured.

The other option I'm looking at is Ryder R2 - swinging him forward and bringing in either Sandi(if he starts well)/Goldy/Grundy/whoever the clear R2 is when the time is right.

I reckon you'll be playing with fire with Ryder at r2. If he goes well he easily matches it with the top forwards but he's a long way from the top rucks. Ruck for me is an area you want to get as close as possible to set and forget prior for r1.

If Ryder matches the top fwds he'll go pretty close to matching a R2
Was it only Gawn and Goldy that were 100+ from the rucks in 2015 (on phone with only gut intuition / jaded memory )

Ryder will definitely end up in my forward line. He will make a solid F6. Having him at R2 at the start gives me the flexibility to wait & see before bringing in the R2. Eg. If Jacobs/Mummy/someone unexpected becomes the clear R1 or R2, I'll be able to upgrade a forward rookie and bring them in while moving Ryder to F6.

The top two rucks of the year inevitably go 110+ or close to now. Not many forwards match what the top rucks pull out. With Martin, Zorko and the like out I reckon 95 will be the pass mark for forwards this year. Ryder's best is well and truly in line with that: he averaged 94 for the 5 years prior to this one, however he's well short of the top tier ruck scores. I just don't think he's worth the risk when you consider his ceiling compared to the Gawn, Goldy, Sandi, Jacobs, Mummy tier; but as a forward relieving a fallen premo like Sandi in the ruck, there's not a lot to argue with.
