If I was going to go a midprice R2, I'd look at Nankervis in the No.1 ruck role at Tigers.

With that being said I'm not planning on changing from Gawn & Grundy.

Keen to see how Nankervis goes today in the Tigs intraclub.

Apparently got beaten pretty convincingly by Maric, but did a few good things around the ground.

A lot on the Tiges board think he'll be #1 ruck again, over his back aids, could be a good pick if your nagets were the size of the moon.

if he's fit and is looking close to his best again, at $280k, I like him more than Sandi

Probably already been asked, but Saints fans:
Hickey clear no. 1 ruck or is Longer right on his hammer?

Hickey ahead at this stage based on his 2016 season. However this time last year everyone was saying Longer was ahead based on his 2015 season. There's no real way of knowing. Longer is a monster (Mumford type) so in one on ones it's pretty even or going Longer's way a fair bit of the time, Hickey is more athletic and better around the ground. Hick has beaten guys like Gawn at AFL level.

2015 Longer (22 years old): 9.3 disposals (5.6 contested), 2.4 marks, 29.1 hitouts, 2.66 tackles, 2.72 clearances. Only 1 goal from 18 games. 31 FF, 29 FA.
2016 Hickey (25 years old): 13.3 disposals (8.5 contested), 3 marks, 28.7 hitouts, 3.2 tackles, 3.6 clearances. 3 goals from 20 games. 21 FF, 44 FA.

Hickey's hitout to advantage rate is over 30%. Can't find the stats for Longer of 2015, but in 2014 (from around 400 hitouts in 16 games he went at 25%). In 2013 in 4 games for Brisbane, off his 70 hitouts just 21% were to advantage. Probably fair to say our midfield of 2017 is going to be better than what he was tapping to in '13 and '14, and Armo and Steven both had great years in 2015 so it'd be interesting to know what it was.

Hickey has him covered clearly around the ground at this stage imo, Longer never seemed to do much in that regard. Club rates Longer though, he struggled with returning from a shoulder, starting slow and then having some concussion issues after that so his 2016 was a write off, Hickey really made the spot his own.

We're in an interesting position with the two developed and ready to go this season, we've very rarely had them both fit at the same time (Hickey injured for a chunk of 2015 from memory, and abviously Longer last season). We can't play both in the same team, Longer can't play forward. Hickey could play forward to a better level but still isn't much chop and with Bruce, Paddy, Membrey and Roo floating around it would make us top heavy imo.

Form will surely dictate who is selected, Hickey will start the year after the 2016 he had and it will be up to him to continue his form or improve, because if Longer is banging down the door I don't think the club will be afraid to switch them after a few down weeks with Hickey. I don't think both will be on our list in 2018 because they can't play together so it's a big year, with whoever not getting the opportunities looking for a new club (if we can't figure out a balanced way to play them in the same team without hurting our mobility).

I want to pick Hickey and I rate him ahead of Longer- around the ground work and hitouts to advantage are both superior. But Longer was also just 22 in 2015 and will soon be 24 this year so who knows with development- he was a top 10 draft pick. Hickey>Longer early on. After that who knows, personally I'm backing in Hickey.

His best was very good Supercoach wise, but I don't think he'll have a resurgence at 31 years old. I'll keep an eye on him for draft, but unlikely for classic.

Thanks very much for taking the time for that, mate, it's a great summary. :thumbsu:

Agree with the things you noted about Hickey and think he can increase his output again this year based on the factors you mention (good HTA / low shark rate, rucking to a midfield which will be stronger again, handy around the ground and a chance to improve slightly) if he stays the number one throughout.

It's hard holding on to two ruckmen of similar ability and both with designs on the number one mantle, especially when neither has that string to their bow of being able to rest forward and be consistently effective there.

Nice write up. I'm keeping a close eye on him but have got Witts in my starting line up for now - may change to Hickey before R1 though.

For someone not able to afford/not interested in Gawn, who should I replace Goldstein with if he isn't getting up? I have Sandi as my R2.

Had Grundy in my day 1 team, still interested in Stef Martin. Have Ryder as my F4 is he able to go R1?

Also interested in Mumford as a POD but don't know his HOA percentage because he had a drop off last year with relatively similar stats.

Grundy or Stef.

PS I'm not from perf
Is that why you love Butts? - From your home town?

FWIW - He'd be one of my favourite WC players...If he had the athleticism to match the smarts, he'd be unstoppable.

* Nothing to do with SC but who gives a **** hey

Partly yes.

Loved the way Waters went about it too.

Butler is similar to Waters. Without the injuries they'd both be AA

:tearsofjoy: i can sympathize with you. Mine are like back wheels as i have twin 5 month olds and a 4 year old.
Must be the reason why i'm monitoring witts and marics' pre season form.
Oooh. Twins. I am so sorry mate.
My 3 year old is jealous of one. Cant imagine what it would be like if she had to deal with two!o_O

One thing I haven't seen here about Witts is his end of year VFL form.

Stats, someone?

It was of a high standard from what I know, except for that final, where we lost a fair bit of trade value.

I'm more of a fan than most Pies. Decent tap, decent field kick for a big man.
I always thought he would take years, has shocking core strength. If he's worked on that & Rocket gives him first go, I'll back him in with Ryder as back up.
Here's what I could find for anyone interested. Stat lines and write-ups (helpful to see if up against Stephen Michael or Tattoo from Fantasy Island).
Writeups mostly from Coll VFL news section, so grain of salt warranted. Hitout stat always rightmost. Stat-wise did OK in prelim given double-teamed.

Solid effort Jarrod. Didn't realise you posted in here :p

Trying to find value in the rucks, had a hard look at Boyd with the DPP but those offseason ops has me a bit worried he could be underdone come round 1.

I don't want to spend top dollar on the top rucks, they don't fill me with confidence, each one of them are a question mark at the start of the season, including Gawn.

Witts didn't play in the Suns intra-club match
Fully precautionary according to Eade
"he could have played... just got a bit of stinger in the shoulder during the week... really good preseason, he'll play next week"
