22000? Really? They'd have got more at Wigan
. 22k in Wigan does nothing for the game and Melbourne has been one of the best supported clubs in the NRL, while Sydney crowds have been declining.

Maybe it was poorly advertised?

Just weeks before the opening game, Kangaroo Andrew Fifita defected to Tonga to join erstwhile New Zealander Jason Taumaolo. This did little to alter the impression the eligibility rules are so lax you could play for Wales after scoffing a bowl of leek soup.

It was then revealed rugby league is not officially considered a sport by the Global Association of International Sports Federations. Unlike such time-honoured recreations as arm wrestling, dodgeball, foot golf and pole dancing.

[...]

When former NRL chief executive Dave Smith negotiated the rights to host the tournament he promised the Rugby League International Federation a $12 million profit. This was an ambitious projection given Sydney's historical indifference to international rugby league.

The organisers squeezed revenue from various governments. Queensland pledged $8 million for a package that includes semi-finals and the final and, in something of a masterstroke, league-crazy Papua New Guinea paid $5 million for three games.

But cash-strapped Destination NSW reneged on its $4 million commitment and will not pay a cent. This meant Sydney was given only two games, prompting inevitable recriminations from the same short-sighted officials who did nothing to help gain financial support.

Glad the Welsh scored on the final play.

The crowds sounded great in both Port Morseby and Auckland.

Bit light on in Townsville but i reckon the crowds have been really good so far. This isnt the olympics or Football World Cup.

How good is Tonga vs Somoa and NZ vs Tonga gonna be!!

Also England vs France in Perth could be a good match up.

Even Townsvilleans, who don't exactly have a lot else available, have no showed. Amazing the RLIF got state governments to pay millions of dollars for this.

What would you suggest? That we just don't bother having a World Cup? If it's as big a waste of money as you imply...

How many people do you realistically is going to attend watching Jayne play a second rate nation?
Let’s put some context with this.

It was still a disappointing crowd which probably would’ve got more elsewhere, but there’s the big question, where?

Sydney has been down, Newcastle most likely would’ve and possibly a country venue too. Townsville was a safe option which clearly didn’t work on the night so questions need to be asked.

Good on the Americans though for having a crack and scoring a couple of tries against a pretty good side.

No surprise not to see a mention of the sell out in PNG. Auckland was acceptable given the Warriors form and support should build on that performance.

Lets see what the double header in Townsville gets in a week or two. That will give us a better gauge on things.

It was the first city to have game with out the home nation. I reckon 5k was ok.

If the Referee isn't sure the ball is grounded and refers it and the Video Ref who, on the face of the video evidence isn't sure that ball is grounded it seems fair to ask, 'who has seen it grounded'? If neither official is certain the ball is grounded how is it a try? I agree with Brett Kimmorley on that first French try against Lebanon- it wasn't a try as there was no conclusive video evidence and out on the ground the Ref was not sure.

I know what the video rule is but it is illogical. Surely in a situation where neither official can categorically verify that the ball is grounded the result has to be no try. That said we go by the rules so good luck to the French.

Yes, fully agree with that. The law is daft, it should be "if you can't see it, you can't give it".

Australia too good for the French. Wade Graham 4 tries who would have thought it.

Crowd was disappointing again.

Good to see SEVEN get back to some normal camera angles. e.g. actually having the camera behind the player as he kicks at a conversion. Last week in the Australia v England game they had the camera above and to the side of the uprights.
