I know i will miss 15 goals from 20 AFL games + 0 goals from 3 SANFL games.

Yes, that's right. A full-time small forward who played 23 games kicked 15 goals, in a position he isn't suited for, in a team that's entire game plan was to setup ground ball goal opportunities.

Gooo team!!!

Probably worth keeping a running list of tall, lead-up, marking forwards that we could target in this next two weeks.

Ones mentioned so far:
Watts
O'Brien
Sproule

Only Watts would significantly improve us next year, but the other two could be inspired longer term pick ups. Wonder if O'Brien has the potential scope to improve that Tom Lynch and Schulz had after they got traded to their second clubs.

Would be neat to have Sproule developing alongside his former TAC Cup teammate Marshall also.

We would have Frampton, Ladhams, and Ryder on our list, with Dixon, Howard, and Westhoff all capable of pinch-hitting. The situation really isn't as dire as it seems, though I would still be looking to recruit one more player for development.
Its not very good either.
  • Ladhams will be only 20 next year.
  • Frampton will be 22 but has been injured for a lot of the last 2 years and will miss some of the pre-season getting over the reconstruction.
  • Dixon is an irreplaceable KPF and ideally that's all he should be.
  • Howard has done almost no ruck work since debuting at the club.
  • Westhoff is not physically capable of rucking full games in ruck.
Of the above players Dixon and maybe Frampton are the only ones even equipped to assert themselves physically against a mature bodied AFL ruck.

Perhaps we have been lulled into complacency with an excellent injury run and the sublime ruck work of Ryder. Ryder reminded us just how important a good ruck can be in clearances.

The talk in the west is that Matt Taberner is attracting plenty of interstate interest. I'm far from convinced by him but his finish to the season was encouraging.

The other one I can think of would be Sam Day. Missed the whole of last season with a hip injury and would be well behind Lynch and Wright now.

Jeez, those stats definitely aren't in Impey's favour. A promising and permanent small-forward like him should easily be kicking more goals than Boak, Trengove, Wines and Powell-Pepper. Average goals per game also shows how poor Young and Impey were, yet the boys who actually managed more (Neade and Ah Chee) weren't given the same opportunities. Unfortunate.

I thought of Day too, but he looked pretty unathletic to me before his injury. Hate to think of how mobile he will be now.

Taberner is a no from me.

Young is a good footballer IMO. I'm happy to move him on but the main reason for his year was his shoulder troubles. I'd certainly wish him all the best.

Showed some glimpses

Still a while away but I'm very keen not to flood out magpies with ok players with no upside just to be injury insurance holding back the development of our kids like ladhams.

For me frampton ladhams is enough. Would only bring in someone as ruck insurance if they can be hidden down back or up forward without hurting us if we need to give ruck time to our developing players.
Easy to forget about someone who got dropped for a gf
Would have happened anyway because afl listed players still need to be picked before a rookie listed player under the sanfl rules. This happened during the season too and this is what does not help us. Ladhams needed to play mostly ruck to develop and he wasn't ready for league or available under the rules. He would have had lots of time had he been allowed to play in the reserves.
So is the answer, specifically for us right now, promote Ladhams, rookie list a ready "break glass" ruck but have them double as a part time assistant coach?

Can't play as much per the bloody SANFL rules therefore won't interrupt on field development of kids in SANFL, but you want someone decent in case you really need them, so to attract the right sort of candidate you create a role where the pay isn't ... an insult. And they genuinely have to do the defined part time AC role or the AFL would rightly do us for salary cap evasion.

Mumford for a year, or some other credentialed candidate? If that's too difficult, or if "nothing happens" we could delist Lobbe and re-rookie him to at least solve the SANFL rucking development time issue for Billy and Ladhams.

Of course the SANFL could just change the rules on us after we've made a bunch of complex re-arrangements. I'm sure their review is conveniently timed to complete post all the AFL list lodgement dates.

Is anyone remotely credentialed going to come at a significant discount to what Lobbe is on?

Potentially available guys like Mumford, Zac Clarke, Jake Spencer, Keegan Brooksby etc all have either shown they aren’t genuine AFL quality ruckmen and/or have grave injury concerns.

Is there anyone handy in the feeder leagues who would come at next to nothing?

Maybe ... but on Ladhams I think he has potential to become good but I don't want him rucking in the league side if he's going to be getting smashed every week or managing 5 touches. I'd rather he develop in a competition that he can cope with and then gradually promote him. Not just Ladhams but any young player that cannot cope with league standard is better getting more touches in the reserves to develop his game rather than a handful in the league side for 18 games. This notion of throwing every recruit in the league side for development does not benefit every recruit. Also we had too many talls when playing all the afl boys and that was so imbalanced that we couldn't get every tall player firing because we didn't have enough smalls to win the ball. Take away these rules and I believe our club would develop a lot of these guys better.

Forget Sam Day. A Hip dislocation is career ending.

Josh Carr hurt during 2005-07 years, but he left to play with his bro, and when Matthew retired he came back, unfortunately well passed his prime.
He might have been past his prime but he still managed to maintain his 'never played in a Showdown loss' record, right through to his retirement :);)
