I'd be extremely surprised if he left to be honest, however, I don't think you can make such a statement until you see him in a lesser sides defence.

I disagree. I think you can take the attributes of a player and project how said player will perform elsewhere.

In Aliir's case, he is athletic and speedy so can be responsible for a player in a particular area quite well when the midfield is generating enough pressure to reduce the chances of a well-aimed ball coming in to his defended player's advantage. He doesn't read the ball incredibly well, but instead relies on his reactions to improve results. If it sounds like I'm describing a younger Dan Merrett, I noticed that too.

If you dropped him into our defensive structure he will probably look lost. It's not yet clear how Fagan will approach the regular season but the lesser midfield pressure means that the reaction speed hurts more as opposed to knowing where the entry is going to go (Andrews-style). We also have tended to play more man on man with third man duties sporadically applied where I think Aliir can be exposed by multiple leading patterns, etc, that require more game awareness to track.

I don't think Aliir is a finished product and in a couple of years this will probably be a significantly different story but I don't think he will improve our defence for some time yet.

With Schache Mcstay and cuts potentially on there way out (which will hurt more then losing yeo and docherty) who will we need to replace them. Cant keep going to the draft every year.

Good post.

On the last line that he wouldn't improve our defence for some time yet, I'd agree, but on what he has demonstrated and his age I think he'd be a very good long term investment and should be primed to peak along with the rest of our keys and hopefully our mid core.

However, if McStay gets moved into defence, improves on what he showed before injury last year and doesn't want to go elsewhere to be a forward I'd be reluctant to make the investment at all.

Ahhhh, are we already looking to replace all three?

Schache I'm not worried about. Just his agent ensuring he's getting his max value. No team out there will value him more than us and pay him accordingly. If our coaching staff are doing their job then he's already buying into his mammoth role in our future and he has plenty of mates at the club now.
If McStay can't be a defender I can understand him wanting to move considering our KFs (although this is assuming Schache wants to stay)
Why is Cutler reputed to want to leave?

Not saying all are going to leave. Just it is plausible at this stage.

My prediction:

Cutler and Schache will re-sign, Mcstay will net us a pick between 20-30.

Speculation I know but boy would I be disappointed to only receive that kind of return for McStay. These guys are worth so much more to us than other teams. ****!

I agree, but I have a funny feeling Mcstay will be starved of opportunities and struggle to get w solid spot in our team. May be the complete opposite but just the feeling I get.

It's up to McStay to demand a spot in the top 22. This playing forward stuff is a pipe dream IMO. Bum down, head up and work hard to earn it. Play as a third tall in defence and let him try to run the ball a bit more and play to his strengths in regards to his athleticism. Gardiner plays better on small/medium types IMO anyways.

I don't think it matters where McStay lines up. A positional change is useless if he doesn't attack the footy, do the defensive stuff and help his teammates out more regularly.
That sums it up for me - it's about his attitude and intent. If he doesn't lift those, it is difficult to see him being picked before the likes Gardner or Close, who may have limitations but could never have their commitment questioned.

Pretty stupid if McStay leaves due to opportunities. There are opportunities there if he works hard, he just doesn't want to put the effort in. The problem is, he is going to find it so much harder at another team because they will have higher standards probably. However, l am assuming he knows this and is backing in their development to get the ebst out of him

After the first 2 rounds we still lack good KPD depth. With the suns looking like crap i wonder if we can get Steven May. Absolute gun and would add some much needed brute in our backline. A spine of May
Andrews
Beams
Hipwood
Schache.

Agree about another big KPD but think your over-reaching with May. Clubs focus is the draft I believe and think that we'll assess this need in another couple of years. Greater concern are small forwards/faster types.

I feel we could be in a position to take a punt on mays. Bit of a stretch yes. But still has 6 good years left in him. If he feels goldcoast arent going anywhere and we have an ok year i dont feel its entirely unrealistic. We still have the untried skinner aswell.

I agree with jjami15, I'd be throwing a bit of cash at a Devon Smith, criminally underrated small forward. I think we need to bring in one established small forward who still has a lot of years left.

Devon Smith would be brilliant in our lineup. Great suggestion there.

In the meantime, as a bit of a stopgap, I wouldn't be opposed to throwing McLuggage up forward with the instructions to be a bit of a goal sneak. He certainly has the touch, skills and goals nous to do it. Would certainly add a bit more scoreboard pressure anyways

Well it's only round 2 but I've just had a geez at the GWS unsigned players and my god the first 7 are all quality.

Jacob Hopper
Dylan Shiel
Devon Smith
Matt Kennedy
Matt Buntine
Josh Kelly
Harrison Himmelberg

Adam Kennedy
Matt De Boer
Stevey J
Dawson Simpson

I threw out Devon Smiths name before but had no idea he hasn't signed yet, I wouldn't think twice about giving away Port's 1st rounder for him and Himmelberg. Kelly and Shiel will be chased hard by big victorian clubs, whilst Hopper, Kennedy and Buntine would all be more attainable as they'd be looking for opportunities.

(I hate doing this to myself, its round 2 and we probably won't get any of them :'(:'(:'()

No chance of Smith leaving GWS. He's best mates with Jeremy Cameron and GWS has a good chance to win multiple premierships the next decade. I don't see him leaving for a rebuilding club. We would need to give up a top 10 pick for him at least, given the amount offers he will get from his home state clubs.
