On the Draft and Trade thread supposedly North are also making a play for Milera and Zac Jones. Understandably it's only BigFooty but taking into account their two big plays at Josh Kelly and Heeney last year I like their thinking. Noble has stated that the draft is the way to go for the next few years and rightly so (just retain them) but after that I hoe the club looks at doing something similar. The lay of the land has changed considerably in regards to contract $$ and length but it's a new world out there. Looking at that time frame those who were drafted last few year and this should become targets. Now before anyone says no-one would come here if we can draft appropriately whilst we are where we are and develop them then our team will look more enticing to come here.

anybody that has any trade value we would probably want to keep and the ones we would want to move on would have little. the only player who may move on who would have value (compensation wise) is Rocky, although signs are good re his possible retention.

I know our main aim is to recruit through the draft and stockpile young talent which is very important for us at this stage, however, I still think the club should be proactive in all recruiting methods(Which we will be). If you look at our list we still have far too many players who don't belong at senior level and we could really use some mature aged depth. I'd look at the free agents. Jasper Pittard, David Zaharakis, Jackson Trengove would all be good targets. Not sure if we could pry them loose though.

Doesn't matter how proactive the club is - if good players don't want to come here there's not much we can do. Hence why we always go to the draft..

Zaharakis is too old and was terrible today by the way.

He's the same age as DBeams Rocky ect. I'm not suggesting we should recruit these guys as young up and coming players to help our next premiership push. I'm well aware that they are mid-late 20's. I just think it could be handy to add some mature aged depth to help improve the players ranked 16-26 on our list.

David Zaharakis reminds me of Richy. He can be damaging but he just can not handle a tag and he often cops one at the Bombers due to the fact that if you let him run loose he can tear you up. Would he cop one in our side with a fair bit of attention going to Rich/Zorko/Beams? You could say the same at the Bombers with Watson/Heppell/Merrett but believe it or not it is Zaharakis who usually gets the tag. I just feel like he could become surplus to needs with the Bombers at the cost he'd demand and we probably have some cash spare to spend on a guy like Zaharakis(Not at the expense of anyone else on our list of course). He'd give us another mature aged, experienced midfielder and at worst improve the bottom 6 players of our best 22.

I'm not 100% convinced he would be a good target by the way. Just one I am mulling over. I wouldn't be surprised if the Crows targeted him along with Gibbs to bolster their midfield.

The way I look at targeting mature talents is, that you are selling out the future for the present. If you are talking about a young, up and coming player in the 20 to 22 age bracket, that's not so much a big deal. But if you trade for a competent, mature age, mid 20's player, you're likely giving up an early second round pick or a late first.

That's a steep price to pay for a team that is trying to build a talented list for the future.

Free agents cost nothing but salary cap mate.

Acknowledged pedantry: a list spot, and any free agent compensation we might have received.

We should put a 5 year deal on decent cash(Front loaded) in front of Darcy Parish. Doubt we'll get it done but may as well make the Bombers sweat a little bit. He remains un-signed despite the fact that the Bombers have tried to sign him up to a longer term contract since early last year. All the Vic clubs will be chasing Schache so we should try and reverse the gesture. He is best mates with Mathieson and has already shown enough in my eyes to prove that he'll be a gun long term. If we end up with two top 10 picks this year, trade one for Parish and take the other one to the draft to select on a midfielder and all of a sudden our future midfield looks very strong.

Essendon would want both. Very hard to deal with. Would love to get him though.

Thinking about our forward set up, we have four talls on our list - Close, Schache, Hipwood and Freeman competing for two / maybe three spots up forward if we decide to go in big for a game, but what we really lack is a Daniel Bradshaw "type" who can give an option that is hard to match up against. Mobile on the deck, great set of hands, strong upper body and at 191cm hard for a smaller back pocket to match up on. Now I know these blokes don't grow on trees, but finding one at the expense of Freeman / Walker and maybe even Close is a priority. This will give us greater versatility in attack and make us harder to match up on.

Having said this we do have Paparone on our list and I think that it is time he gets a serious shot at this sort of role. He has been around for a while, but is still only 22 years old.

I'm a firm supporter of Paps. He could become literally anything. 194cm running beast whose shown a lot of good signs up the ground and in down back. Unsure why players like McStay are being persisted so much, at the expense of someone like Paps. Both have phenomenal potential, but am waiting for Paps to get equal time on field trialled in a number of roles to see what he can produce.

Can see the Dockers or the Eagles loving a player like him and if he ain't getting opportunities here, he may very well look for a move back West.

Paps has had 49 games played in various roles. Has missed a lot of footy through injury so I'm hoping he breaks into the team soon so we can see if he has improved his contested footy to an adequate level.

Definitely. You'd think fully fit and firing, and with 50 games already under his belt, that it shouldn't be long with an extended run in the seniors over this season and the next, to properly gauge exactly what he will end up like

most would agree we need an inside contested beast, i haven't seen much of them over the last year or 2 but we should be looking at Jacob Hopper and Matt Kennedy from the giants, both still un-contracted and been in the system and developed for 2 years. would not be giving up a top 2-3 pick (ours) for them but may be worth a look at with ports pick which will in all likely hood be in the 7-12 range. Hopper would be the one i would chase out of the 2 from the small snippets i have seen.
