I agree, but i do see McStay as a more natural defender than a forward at this stage. And i also think he would be more likely to get games as a defender this year as well.
So i hope he has made the right call for himself if he is wanting to play in the forward line.
Maybe he feels on the open market he would be more valuable as a forward than a defender. And more likely to earn a bigger contract with another team more desperate for forwards. (Carlton perhaps)

He wouldn't be wrong there. If he has a good game this week (assuming he plays) and gets a round 1 spot, it'll be a huge chance to lock down a spot while schache and Freeman are out.

Realistically with all that the club has seen over the last few years it would be difficult to blame players for considering their options, particularly with the new pay agreement coming soon.

That said, you would hope that they see we finally have a very clear direction under Fagan and Noble, and that the club would at least appear to have turned the corner.

I'm interested in how McStays agility has changed after bulking up and if he can use the extra bulk in marking contests.

agree I feel like he got pushed out of contests a bit to easy in the past, so resorted to the float across the front of the pack. He's good at it no doubt, but there's a balance between the two that he hasn't quite struck yet. Hopefully being a bit stronger in both the legs and the top will help him be more confident that he can go one on one.

Wasn't McStay a mid in juniors until his growth spurt? There's a part of me that would like to see his disposal on or around the ball.

If we are going to throw some money at a youngster with potential let's offer it to Aliir Aliir. Fills a desperate need and fits perfectly in our age demographic. Aliir Aliir and Harris Andrews as our key tells in the backline with Josh Schache and Eric Hipwood up forward would set our spine up for the next decade.

Said in the gameday thread I could live with losing McStay if it brought us Allir.

Does anyone know if he still has family in Queensland or did they all move west?

Interesting... From what I've heard it seems we are possibly after a key defender at years end and with the recent news from Leemas about McStay possibly looking for another home it makes even more sense. I would actually like Allir Allir in Lions colours, from what I've seen of him he throws himself at the contest, but can also get involved in the play on the rebound. I'm starting to think McStay just doesn't have the desire for AFL footy... he at least plays like he doesn't.

I know it was his first game back from a significant injury but he still looked like he was just going through the motion a lot of the time. Lacks intensity

I have no inside knowledge. Just a player I'd love for us to add to our list.

Not too fussed on Mcstay.

If someone offered pick 20-30 I'd take it. His contested marking skills are good and his kicking but the idea of him being one of our main forwards or defenders and needing to consistently help out defensively seems beyond him.

We would be lucky to get pick 50 to be honest.

Yup. Has been a problem throughout his whole career so far. I wonder if the club ended up hiring a full time psychologist like they said they were going to. Haven't heard anything on the matter but I think someone like McStay would benefit a lot from having one around the club.

He doesn't look great in our team but if he went to a well developed team like the Dogs, just watch him transform to a really good player. Has all the tools to become a great AFL swingman, its just the mental application.
Which really I find frustrating and partly
don't understand. It's been a long time but I personally always loved the contest no matter what level and as soon I was at the ground you would switch on.
I always thought that his output might have symptomatic of the club making the 'we are young' excuses. I'm not so sure anymore.

People need to remember it was his first game of footy in 8 months...

In an interview a few days ago he mentioned that being injured, he was able to work on some things that he hadn't been able to, would love to know what they were. He looked exactly the same player last night that he was pre-injury.

And a bunch of players looked rusty a.f against the suns but miles better vs. The dogs. Give him a few weeks for consistency.

He definitely plays KPP like a winger. Maybe playing him on-ball in the NEAFL might get him used to the physical stuff?

Based on yesterday though, difficult to justify McStay being selected when Schache and Frost return.

Andrews, Frost and Gardner at the back, Schache, Hipwood and Close up forward means we will be too tall with McStay as well. Plus he needs a run of games in the 2's IMO

Based on round 1 it was hard to justify selecting anybody. Giving McStay a couple of matches in the 2s wouldn't be the worst option although he's played there in the past it hasn't really helped his laziness
