Well what ever we do we cannot afford to lose more than 1 of McStay, Cutler, Schache and Rockliff. I think McStay and Rockliff will go. Schache is a 50/50 and Cutler is more likely than not to stay. I know its really really early in the season but I'm already quite worried.

A lot can change between now and the end of the season. I'm backing Fagan, Noble and the boys in the team around them to hopefully bring a few who were contemplating leaving, well and truly back into the fold without a look back by season's end.

Yeah way too early for pick player scenarios, was more interested in the implications of the scenario which dlanod put forward. Even though it was just an example to show his reasoning, it does provoke thought around the current rulings of draft picks to list spots and the potential trading of draft picks on draft night. I am sure the AFL would be troubleshooting this potential problem, if they intend to bring it this year or next, but I will be very interested to see how they navigate this issue, whilst also preventing teams with academies to manipulate the draft as was the case before they tightened the rules around the number of picks to number of list spots. Thoughts?
Word on the street is that Rocky is a huge fan of Fagan so far.
If that is really true I think the only reason Rocky leaves is because we don't offer a reasonable contract (in other words we don't want him enough).

In the end of the day, any player that doesn't want to be bere should go. We're gaining respect every week and I'm sure we're moving forward as a club. No club keeps all players, but right now I'd be confident in us keeping everyone we want except maybe Schache (who I really hope we keep.)
Not laughing at your post, but lol at the AFL trouble shooting potential problems. Nothing I have seen so far indicates that the numpties in AFL head office trouble shoot anything. Rather they are reactionary, and only act when the southern clubs whinge about something.
I would imagine clubs already look at the possibility of trading picks with points value that they don't plan to use for future picks. Even early 5th round picks with no points value can have a probable/possible implied value, as earlier picks are used up or passed, they move up and gain value.
One thing I have been thinking of, are the over age ex-academy kids playing in our NEAFL team playing as top up players, and if we can gain an advantage relaying on them to cover the NEAFL squad, allowing us to run our Senior list at one or two players short if we want to take "extra" traded in draft picks to the draft.
From my limited understanding, if we run our senior list short, we can upgrade a player from the rookie list for the season. This does leave our rookie list short, but how often does a club end up promoting all the the players on their rookie list to their senior list due to injury?

Every club that comes last says it but, assuming we come last, Pick 1 should be firmly on the trade table for a young midfielder of the Hopper, Kelly ilk.

The thing with Rockliff is that he's spent his entire career in a terrible team so wouldn't blame him for wanting to go to a team whose pushing for a premiership. However, if we really show something as a team by the end of the year and he can see us playing finals in the short term well yeah he'd probably stay. Basically my opinion on Rockliff, is that his decision will be dictated by how much improvement we see by the end of the season. (i have no inside info on him at all for clarification)
Again the thing for me is, who wants to come here. All well and good to say the pick is up for grabs, but if the calibre of player you would expect for pick one doesn't want to come here, it's lip service at best.
If we end up with pick one, I'd sooner trade a future round 1 draft pick for a player like Hopper.
I'd definitely consider trading Ports pick plus a future second round pick for a player such as Hopper.
Honestly, I hope Rocky goes in search of a premiership, regardless of what ever level of compensation we receive.
He's given us the best years of his career, and we've failed to deliver. He's at the peak of his abilities, he deserves his shot, and I honestly believe he will not get a chance in the next 5 years here.

Ainsworth?
Not for pick one. Let's wait and see how this years draft crop shapes up, and if the top prospects live up to expectations or if other players come to the fore. It would have to be a weak top end for me to consider swapping pick one for Ainsworth.
For the record, I wouldn't have taken Ainsworth with pick one last year.
I would think Cutler would be more the 50/50 at this stage. McStay would need to get a massive offer for him to leave. Schache who knows, but my heart tells me he will stay. He doesn't seem like a bloke who is drawn to the huge crowds and bright lights of a big Victorian club. I think he will enjoy playing alongside Hipwood as it will ease some pressure on him.

We won't trade in any big name players, might get a fringe player from somewhere but we need to get better before we can lure good players
Very sure we will take ballenden, trading for ports future pick last year just said to me from the outside looking in that was all about him. We couldve used someone like powell pepper on our list so deferring to next year was strategic. So I don't expect that strategy to change now. The only time there's be a question over it would be if a bid came before our first pick & let's hope that doesn't happen

Would seriously consider raiding the Giants with our first. Himmelberg + Hopper (both of which I'm lead to believe we are very interested in) would be great gets. Take the rest of the picks to the draft and focus on skilled speedsters.

So he goes to another club for the silver , there are no guarantees at all he would achieve a premiership( Buckley) , only a guarantee of playing finals.
We show more and more every week , we could be only 1 or 2 years away from a finals berth .
By the end of this year we'll see if we are that close .
My point is if the signs are there for us pushing close to finals in he near future , then I would see him and most of the other unsigned staying if these are reasons for leaving .
Now there is the money thing, so also other reasons will make decisions harder.
I also see Rocky as a player that would love to be around when we play finals because of those years of club failure.
You only have a certain amount of resources, so using them to chase low-probability trade options - let's call it 'high-hanging fruit' -is not clever. If you're a rising top 8 club you have another card to play (GWS Deledio, Griffen etc), but we don't have that. Yet.

I don't see the fact he played at GWS for a few years inoculating him from Melbourne go-home-itis. He might be perfectly comfy at GWS, but starting again in a new state at a bottom 2 club when 3-4 Vic clubs are throwing a bank at him? Would you do that?
Unless we are literally able to pay $250,000 more than any Melbourne team, it ain't happening and is a total resource sink.

Could not agree more, great summary of our current situation.
I would not be giving up our first pick unless it was for a very highly rated young midfielder ie. Josh Kelly. Jacob Hopper and/or Matthew Kennedy not at that level at the moment, 2 potential A graders does not equal 1 demonstrated A grader IMO.

I reckon Hopper is showing enough. In any event, isn't taking an 18 yo with our first pick purely based on potential anyway? The benefits of going after a highly rated 20yo off another list instead of taking an 18yo draftee are pretty significant.
Normally, I'd not get too involved in these sort of speculative discussions because it is pure guesswork but I think GWS are a special case due to their abundance of talent. They can afford to leak one elite talent a year without causing too many dramas and we've got trade assets to interest them. If one of their players is looking for a high salary, wants to play his preferred position and isn't desperate to head to Victoria, we've got some sort of chance at attracting him up here. That chance is enhanced if we can develop a reputation as a club that is going places and if Fagan's aura continues to glow as a coach players enjoy playing under.
Yes, it is all speculative at this stage but with a few young mids at other clubs who might be able to be prised away, I think our first pick has to be an asset we'd be prepared to part with, even if the youngster in question hasn't completely dominated at senior level just yet.
It depends on whether the club see more potential/upside in players like Hopper and Kennedy than this years crop eg. Fogarty/Rayner/Stephenson etc. as you said all speculative. I would not be totally against it if we gave away pick 1-3 for Hopper and Kennedy.
