Mayes took a big step up this year. His stats match up well (not as good, but not all that far off) against guys like Laird and Docherty (although he has one of the highest averages of 1%s of any HBF player in 2017) and when compared against someone like Nathan Wilson who most see as an elite HBF, Mayes actually had the better season on paper in the worst team.

As we rise up the ladder, watch as Mayes gets noticed more and more. He will be very close to elite, if not elite.
Sorry. Which is what?

Thought some might be interested in this pre-draft write up. Hard to believe guys like Toumpas were rated higher than Mayes

2012 BigFooty Phantom Draft
Pick 7 - Port Adelaide
Sam Mayes - North Adelaide (187/78/94)
With the three picks I have for Port I will be selecting the best player available and were possible a focus on classy mids. I doubt whether there is a more classier player in this draft other than Sam Mayes. I also tend to favour the player that has performed over the journey as opposed to players who have a break out year in their final year. I understand that there are always exceptions (Greene of GWS) it is just my preference when selecting players for a long term career. For Port I will also favor the local (SA) talent.
Sam Mayes is one of those players who has performed at the highest level for the last three years. He was selected in the AFL-AIS for the last two years after a standout u16 nationals in Sydney 2010. I can recall how dominate he was as a KPF. He reminded me of the Ex Hawthorn premiership player in Tony Hall (also from SA). The way they both moved and in particular the similar way they attacked the ball in the air - they seem to hover.
Sam also had an outstanding u18 champs in 2011 making All Australian as an underaged player selected at CHF, no mean feat! Again he impressed me with his ability to turn quality defenders around. His ability to mark and lead was exceptional and I can recall how he was able to kick a couple of goals on Kelly (VC). I think the only goals kicked on Kelly for the carnival.
Sam probably did not have the 2012 champs that some would have liked, but I think that this was more due to SA trying to improve his draft position and show the footy world that he can also play thru the midfield, something that did not come naturally to Sam. In my opinion still had a good carnival, but probably not to the level of some of the other higher rated mids. Still I can remember Sam getting a lot of the footy and a goal in the first ten minutes of the Etihad game v Wines & Whitfield. So he can match these guys, just needs the learn some of the finer points to midfield positioning. Unfortunately I did not see much more of Sam for the remainder of 2012. From what I can gather from other posters is that he more than held his own in open company for Nth Adel.
As a footballer he is a high level athlete with great skills duel sided, well balanced and focused. I haven't elaborated on his talents as so many phantom drafters have said it all

Would be nice to hear something re: Rocky, tomorrow.
Surprised we havent heard anything at all over the weekend.
I'm happy for it to take awhile. Would sound like that Noble is talking to their mob and trying to see how we can scratch their back and they can scratch ours.

Toumpas looked incredible in his draft year. Pretty much this whole board wanted him badly. Helped that he was a Lions fan. But he was electric.

Melbourne ruined him.

I'd like to get it done early then we can move on and trade our pick 1 to the saints for picks 8&9 and keep our pick 2:cool: so the Saints can take Rayner at 1, 4 picks in the top 13- 2, 8, 9, and 13.;)

Reading that you would think he would be an A grader by now. Poor development, external factors and in hindsight a weak draft. Mayes seemed to have regressed since his draft days in terms of skill, according to this report, but I think he can still come on. Will start pushing A grader territory hopefully next year.

So do we take credit for ruining karnezis or collingwood? Or was he broken before we got him??;)

We can at least say we got one productive year at AFL level from him. Same goes for Aish.

Karnezis wasn't a prime top pick. In fact, many thought we reached for him at 25.

Poor development / coaching. We're seeing this year how much he has improved under Fagan. Will be even better next year as will most of the young guys. Exciting times ahead

The game is more than just Madden on the playstation. You cant constantly trade out yoyr best players for draft picks. You need to have CURRENT good players bringing the young ones through. We are bringing Hodge in for his ability to leader and develop the players onfield. Replacing Zorko who is an AA player for the chance in a lottery at an 18yo doesnt add up.

How has the Suns development gone getting flogged by 60 every week?
Suns brought in the wrong experienced players, bock, brown, krakouer, nathan ablett, brennan..... the list goes on they managed the beginning very poorly and surrounded their young talent with over priced duds. Simon Black was right when he used the term "mercenaries" cause thats all they came for is money.

Statistical confusion time here (and I know someone will be able to explain it to me!)

Wilson has a lower effective disposals per game (13.9 v 16.2)
Wilson has higher clangers per game (2.7 v 1.8)
Wilson has fewer 1% per game (2.2 v 3.5)

Yet somehow Wilson also has a higher disposal efficiency % (79.9 v 77.1)

I am assuming my understanding of what an effective disposal and a clanger are is incorrect (maybe there is an unlisted stat for disposals that are neither effective nor clanger?) otherwise how do you do less good, more bad and get a higher average?

I await the wisdom of the collective *bows humbly*

I don't think an "ineffective disposal" automatically counts as a clanger. Only if it goes directly to the advantage of the opposition.

Free kicks also against count as clangers I am pretty sure.
