Have honestly been happy with our recruiting over the last 6 or so years (didn't really follow the draft before then). Most people on here seemed to be relatively happy with our selections also right after the drafts.

Completely different kettle of fish to player development, an area Jamie Graham has had a lot to do with. Lots of our mids haven't come on as expected which to me says more about our EP programs and tendency to keep young mids on the flanks at AFL level. Have also not had a lot of high first rounders due to trading them away for experienced players (Wellingham) and generally finishing in the top 6.

Lots of issues but can't all be heaped onto our recruitment.
Yeah agree totally. We assume that players not turning must equal poor recruiting, as if we are one of only a handful of teams picking players.

It's unlikely that for the last 10 years have been picking the worst possible options every time we pick a player.

It's more likely that we are starting off with average draftees but for whatever reason aren't providing the right environment for them to thrive in.

Do we honestly think that WB and Richmond have the best two recruitment teams in the competition?

It would work so long as only those who put their arse on the line by listing who they'd choose in the draft could comment and pass judgement on others who did the same. Otherwise, It would be a shit show of those who don't post their list of who they want in the draft using hindsight to discredit certain posters they generally don't like or agree with... which I've seen occur on this board previously.

People can comment and agree with all the picks taken by the club. They could disagree with one of our picks... etc whatever they are still giving an opinion. Some might just state that they don't know enough to have an opinion. However in a few years time only those who pointed out the mistakes will be able to claim that the club made obvious mistakes.

You could claim you've decided to take all different players. If your players don't work out any better then it's easy just don't have a big complaining mouth using the benefit of hindsight. Either way it's a bit of fun

Exactly ! That is a prerequisite of the thread I am suggesting. Leaving it up to Liam, who knows far more than I on how this scenario would work.

You're kind of making it sound like our recruiting and developing has been genuinely poor. I think it's been decent, but can be characterized by an inability to develop elite talent.

We are an upper middle of the table team and our youth is decent without being 'good'.

I'm on the Bailey bandwagon. I love any player that can break through the pack and sprint the ball out of trouble.

What pick is Bailey expected to possibly go? Can we use pick 32 on him?

Another Zac Bailey Video
Bailey was outstanding in that game ,he tore Vic Metro apart reminded me of Scott West on occasions and Rory Sloan sometimes too ..

OMG This doesn't happen very often but for once I agree with :eek:Garry Lyon.

https://www.sen.com.au/news/2017/11/08/even-stars-have-faults-says-lyon/

"Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon says over-analysis of draft hopefuls can blind recruiters to qualities that could be the making of a player at AFL level."

Lyon rated competitiveness as the most important part of the drafting equation.
“I want a competitor to the death,” he said.

For once Lyon is spot on and I really hope our recruiters are on the same page.
How does Lyon know there is over analysis? He under analysed consequence of banging Billy’s chick.

Funny you compare him to Scott West. I thought exactly the same thing but thought too many people might not remember West.

Talk shit campaigner.

People acting like he kicks like Mcginnity going by that, which is probably his worst game by foot and he was still one of the allies best players.

Christ I'd love to know what you experts think of Worpel if that's what you're complaining about in Baileys game.

Let's ignore the line breaking, drawing of tacklers, acceleration from stoppages, weaving through traffic and clearance work for what... couple shots on goal and a couple poorly executed field kicks. Go watch his other videos, or better yet, a full game.

His kicking is fine. I'll **** up anyone who says otherwise. Not targeted specifically at you Eastern Rangers
Haven’t seen him live (like you) and I’m simply commenting on what the footage clearly shows.Maybe it’s a poor sample like that footage of Shuey from the U18’s but it’s not something you want to see.

He can look really dynamic around stoppages but if the club thinks he’s a flaky kick then he’ll slide.

So, the Big Footy draft has progressed passed our first 5 picks. What I liked about our picking up of multiple second rounders was that we have a chance to shape our draft with multiple picks where the draft is strongest and I think Monocle has made the most of it.

Pick 13 – Jack Higgins (Oakley Chargers, Vic Metro)
The 2017 Morrish Medalist – previous winners were Oliver and McCluggage. A member of the AA U18 team, this guy is a small forward/midfielder providing flexibility and added depth in the midfield. He has played midfield and has produced consistently in that role, as well as hitting the scoreboard. Clark and Constable were already taken meaning Higgins who was tipped as top 10 slid through. Adelaide were the only team to go a tall option.

Pick 21 – Zac Bailey (NT Thunder, Allies)
A tough inside midfielder who manages to get frequent first use and then works well in traffic and delivering to outside options. Ideal inside mid and anyone disliking this pick, please see Dark Sharks. O’Brien, L Fogarty and Allen off the board. Another member of the AA U18 team.

Pick 26 – Tim Kelly (South Fremantle)
Mature recruit offering both inside and outside capability. Ready to go in 2018, the Sandover 2017 runner up would provide the age we need and a skill set we are lacking. Is this the right place to take him? Not sure but with a couple of clubs hovering, I guess he looked decent value at 26 and so good news. Deemed to be the best mature age recruit in the draft. Fills a void of that age group.

Pick 32 – Dylan Moore (Eastern Rangers/Vic Metro)
Another small forward with proven midfield capability, he is also a very competent midfielder. He has been likened to Tom Scully in his running ability. He is close to AFL ready in endurance and could be knocking on selection in 2018 as a crumbing forward – midfield will take some time to get the physical strength. Another member of the AA U18 team.

Pick 27 - Nathan Kreuger (South Adelaide/SA)
An interesting tall prospect at 196 cm that can play at both ends. Very strong in the contested marking and is also good at ground level. Can play as power forward and on the power forwards so a natural to develop either to replace Gov or JK.

What I like about our first 5 picks is the overall. It addresses midfield options - variety being tough inside, outside pace, smaller forwards who can take rotations and good football brains. We needed smaller forwards to fill a much needed void. Not sure if Miers would have been better than Moore - I do like the flexibility in midfield that Moore provides and either would have been good picks. No pure athletes in sight. Also good to get a quality tall that can develop for the future.

So BOND 007 - something like this would be nice!

The job i work now no longer affords me the opportunities to watch (travel) and weekends off both here and away so no longer get to watch all the kids live like i used to. In saying that i still some contacts in the industry (guy i work with is the player agent for ah chee and 11 other players), a couple of guys in recruiting departments and a couple of guys on football boards.

As it stands at this moment and up until this point i didnt consider higgins a possibility and thought he'd already be taken. If not my choices are higgins then constable (if bonar not available at 21) or clark (if bonar is available at 21).

As far as im concerned i don't want allen, i just don't think he'll make it not fast enough or good enough overhead to be a mid sized forward, not tall enough to be a key forward, not enough production to be a midfielder.

After watching a few of bailey's highlights, im actually keen on him. Watching those highlights i got a very Sloane, picken, J. Selwood vibe from him. Not really comparing him to them but like them he tends to be on the smaller side for an inside mid(without being a midget). Its his thirst for the contest as well as his intent and explosiveness that made me think of the players above. Yes his kicking is average but there's so many good inside mids in the comp with that trait. I think we have a few great users of the footy that would complement him well as well.

Also don't get the previous comment about him being flakey.
According to this https://www.afldraftcentral.com.au/tag/zac-bailey/ Bailey is 81kgs and is 180cm, think he is physically ready if he is called upon for an AFL debut next season.

That's a lot of shorter players we'd be drafting. I'm not sure i'd be happy with that but there aren't a lot of standout taller prospects either.
We need a taller mid who is good over head. Plus another to put on some inside pressure and add some muscle in close.

Two of Constable, Clark, Worpel or Bonar.

I was losing my mind earlier. my preference for 13 is higgins.

If not there then by preference
Constable if we could guarantee bonar would be available at 21.
Or Clark if we can't.

I would be really pleased with the first 3 selections.
Pick 13 – Jack Higgins
Pick 21 – Zac Bailey
Pick 26 – Tim Kelly

I would like to see the options for the other 2 picks though. You mentioned Miers available at 32. Probably my preference. Watched some highlights of Kreuger. He looks interesting. Not sure what else is available at pick 37 though.
