You say that like Schloithe wasn’t also delisted
In defense of Schloithe. He got delisted by Fremantle as a young kid and went back to WAFL, worked on his weaknesses and improved his strengths, then won a sandover medal. Shows he has a great professional attitude and is deserving of another AFL recall.

Hartung was an athlete who converted to footy. Got chosen by the Hawks based on his speed and athleticism. Now they have ditched him because he has no defensive chase, bravery, awareness and doesn't actually use his speed often. He gets caught holding the ball regularly and butchers his possessions.

At 22yrs old he may improve these things. But after several years on the Hawks list, it so far hasn't happened. So unless we want a quicker Mastern, we should pass.

Man every second news article is calling this draft weak AF. So who’s right. The recruiting staff? Or the pundits/journos?

All the news articles are probably quoting each other with no real idea. That's not to say it isn't weak though

Clubs are cutting their lists back hard, across the board, so they obviously hold the draft in high regard. We are very well placed for it too - better than most as a poster pointed out earlier.

Yes
Good story on him just on AFL.com

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-10-28/sandover-winner-fights-nerves-as-draft-hope-grows

"After finally getting an injury-free run, Schloithe's rare talent as a prolific ball-winner and attacking threat caught everyone's attention this year as he propelled his game to new heights.

He averaged 28 disposals and booted 30 goals in 22 matches, and was simply unstoppable during a mid-year purple patch. In a stunning five-game stretch he collected a combined 158 possessions and snared 17 majors – featuring three hauls of four goals and a bag of five.
"He can obviously have a real impact as a midfielder, but he's very dangerous in the forward 50 as well. The biggest thing for us is he makes his teammates better."

I didn't realize he was dangerous in the forward line. Like him even more now.

What do you define as weak? Probably depends what you are looking for in your list.

Here are some options that could define weak:-
1) the point end of the draft is not as strong as before
2) the first round are not potential A graders
3) there is a steep drop off after pick 40
4) there will only be about 65 kids drafted
5) the talls are not high quality
6) there appears to be little high end available outside of Victoria
7) Vic Metro is weak (this is the one that makes people think it is weak

For what it is worth, here is how I view the draft:
1) The top 3 are not quite as high end
2) The top 15 are pretty even
3) The talent from 16 to 35 is pretty even. Perhaps a little lighter at 16 compared to better years but still strong at 35
4) The talent at 36 to 45 are as good as most years
5) Th talent at 50+ is slightly weaker that a strong year
6) The better talls are defenders, tall forwards are valued higher than defenders. Some good ruck options throughout the draft

That is why I love what the club has done. They have acquired an additional 3 second round picks which is exactly where the drat is at it's strongest.

There will be players going after our pick at 37 that I will be wanting to have selected.

I suspect our pick 87 will feel more like a rooking pick.

Well done to BOND 007 and team for seeing the future and taking action to maximise the draft.

Its considered a weak draft because W A done well in u18s . WA also did well in State of origin. . From this side of the country it isnt weak.
It's a weak draft because Vic Metro had a standout group of midfielders a cut above the rest. Players like Constable and others have been given profile boosts due to the quality of that side across the board, comparatively best available midfielders out of WA and SA could be better than those second string midfielders out of Vic Metro.

Swan Districts, Brisbane Lions,
Aww man, we need to see State of Origin again, and to see the Black Swan victorious over the Vics. It's a travesty that we don't have SoO, especially in an era where WA would have the competition's two most dominant KPFs.

I was listening to ABC grandstand radio yesterday and some eagles supporter rang up upset that we'd given up our 1st AND 2nd round for next year for a couple of 2nd round picks and thought it was ridiculous. (If you're going to call in, at least get the facts right, but that's another story)

Mark Duffield was on at that time and was asked for his thoughts.

He said at the time that he was a little confused as to why we would do this- but then he had a chat to Vozzo, who said that we had made the decision to head to the draft this year and transition the list; we were very confident that the talent this year is even across the first couple of rounds and so we made the decision to make our position stronger this year.

I think the time comes along where you have to back in the recruiters that have watched these guys all year. Personally, from what I have seen, the guys in the top 40 mix aren't all that much different to most years. I think we will be pleasantly surprised with who comes our way next month.

Are you serious saying our midfielders are better than Constable and the second string?

Shit - I saw a majority of games live and that was not my take away. Vic Country yes but not Vic Metro. I cannot seriously name a WA midfielder (eligible in the draft) that would be clearly worthy taking in the first 2 rounds. Starvevich improved as the year went on and I would be OK taking him at 37 but no earlier so he is possibly the exception.

Maybe I missed something, which of the WA and SA eligible midfielders would you say are ahead of Constable, L Fogarty, Naish, Moore and co?
